Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: The Quiet Distance

Evening arrived gently in Singapore, the sky turning a soft shade of gold before fading into deep blue, the city lights slowly waking up one by one like stars arranged too perfectly to be natural.

Inside the apartment, everything was calm.

Too calm.

Anaya stood in the kitchen, stirring slowly, her movements unhurried but not entirely relaxed either, as if she was focusing just enough on the task to keep her thoughts from drifting too far.

She had decided to cook.

Not because she had to.

Not even because she planned it.

But because it felt like something… normal.

Something that made this unfamiliar place feel a little more like home.

The clock ticked quietly on the wall.

7:15.

Then 7:40.

Then 8:05.

She told herself it didn't matter.

Work days could run late.

Especially first days.

Still, her eyes drifted toward the door more often than she wanted to admit.

Her phone remained silent.

When the door finally opened, it wasn't with the calm, steady presence she had come to associate with Aarav.

It was quieter.

Heavier.

As if the weight of the day had followed him all the way inside.

"You're late," she said softly, not accusing, just stating.

Aarav loosened his tie as he stepped in, his movements slower than usual, his expression controlled but tired in a way that went deeper than physical exhaustion.

"Work," he replied simply.

That was all.

No explanation.

No detail.

Just one word.

Anaya nodded.

"Dinner is ready."

They sat at the table a few minutes later.

The same small table they had started using back in India.

The same quiet space that had once felt warm.

But tonight… something was different.

Aarav took a bite.

Paused.

"It's good," he said automatically.

She gave a small smile.

"Thank you."

Silence followed.

Not the comfortable kind.

Not the familiar kind they had grown used to.

This silence felt… careful.

As if both of them were avoiding something they couldn't quite name yet.

"How was your day?" Anaya asked after a moment.

A normal question.

Simple.

But Aarav's hand paused slightly over his plate.

"Busy."

She waited.

Just a second longer.

Hoping he would say more.

He didn't.

"I went out today," she said instead, filling the space gently. "Explored a little."

He nodded once.

"Good."

That was it.

She looked at him more closely then.

Not just at his face.

But at the way his shoulders held tension.

At how his focus stayed on the plate instead of her.

At how present he looked…

And yet—

How distant he felt.

"You seem tired," she said quietly.

"I am."

Still no elaboration.

Anaya lowered her gaze.

She understood pressure.

She understood difficult days.

But this—

This felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Like something from before.

From the beginning.

When he had been there…

But not really there.

Dinner ended sooner than usual.

Not because they were done eating.

But because there was nothing more to say.

Later, Aarav stood by the window, his phone in his hand, messages still coming in, work still pulling at his attention even after hours.

Anaya watched him from across the room for a moment.

Then she walked over slowly.

"Will it always be like this?" she asked softly.

He looked at her, slightly caught off guard.

"Like what?"

"This," she said, her voice calm but carrying quiet weight. "You being here… but not really here."

For a moment, Aarav didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

"It's just work," he said finally.

"It's always just work," she replied gently.

Not bitter.

Not sharp.

Just… honest.

That landed.

He felt it.

But instead of responding, he looked away, his jaw tightening slightly as if he was trying to hold something in place.

"I'll fix it," he said.

But the words didn't carry certainty.

They carried effort.

And effort, sometimes, wasn't enough to reassure.

That night, when they lay down to sleep, the distance wasn't physical.

He was close.

Close enough that she could feel his presence beside her.

But something invisible had shifted between them.

A quiet space.

A pause.

Anaya stared at the ceiling, her thoughts moving slowly, carefully, trying not to overreact, trying to remind herself that one day didn't define everything.

But feelings didn't follow logic so easily.

Beside her, Aarav had already closed his eyes.

Or at least pretended to.

Because his mind wasn't quiet either.

It was louder than ever.

Filled with pressure.

Expectations.

Deadlines.

And now—

Her words.

"You being here… but not really here."

For the first time that day…

That stayed with him.

And somewhere between exhaustion and silence…

Neither of them realized that this wasn't just about one difficult day.

It was the beginning of something they would both have to face—

Together.

Or not at all.
