Chapter 10 - 50 Years of Bloodshed

Storm opened his eyes again as he allowed that memory to fade from his mind.

50 years had passed since the day that he made his proclamation to the world.

The first few years of Storm's life was pretty much hell at that point.

He attacked indiscriminately any humans that crossed his path regardless of the odds against him.

Thinking back on it years later, Storm realized that he had lost his will to live during that time and was seeking his death.

He never managed to find it.

With every attack, Storm's infamy grew. With that infamy came young hunters that were eager to make a name for themselves by slaying 'Calamity '.

Storm killed all those who tried mercilessly and feasted on their flesh to sate his hunger.

With his successes in resisting the humans, other magic creatures flocked to him and begged for his protection.

Requests that were ultimately denied by the crazed dragon.

He stated that these weaklings had relied upon draconic protection for too long, but when dragons needed their aid, they were nowhere to be found.

He allowed them entry into his territory, but stated that he would not come to their aid even if attacked.

If they wished to survive, then they would have to learn to defend themselves.

Eventually his anger cooled and he was able to think more clearly again.

Though he never truly let go of the hatred he felt for humankind.

And so Storm abandoned his territory and slipped into the shadows again.

Taking inspiration from his uncle, he took on the identity of a young human mage. Once he infiltrated a town, he'd slowly begin undermining it from within, spreading chaos and confusion.

When the time was ripe, he'd reveal himself in his full draconic might and destroy the settlement utterly.

Rumors soon spread of a hooded wanderer that would enter a settlement, chaos and destruction followed in his wake and that his arrival always heralded the coming of 'The Calamity '

The humans panicked, not knowing when or where he would strike, and Storm reveled in the chaos it brought.

Currently he was planning his most ambitious strike yet.

"You are sure about this information?" Asked Storm.

He was looking down at a small elven male who kept his head bowed.

Like other Elves who was afflicted by the curse of violence, his hair had long since lost all color and his eyes were completely black with no pupils.

He had a suit of leather armor over a forest green tunic and matching pants, with a pair of knee high leather boots.

Two bracers covered his arms and he had a grey cloak with a hood to cover his head and a small grey scarf to cover his mouth.

Storm met the elf during the beginnings of his rampages. The elf and several of his companions had been captured by hunters and were being escorted to the nearest city to be sold.

Storm didn't truly care about the fate of the elves. Out of all the non human races, Storm disliked elves the most.

He found their inability to defend themselves to be a burden on others.

The fact that this same weakness led to him being seperated from his clan in the first place increased this dislike even further.

Augustine was different however, when the fighting broke out, the elf broke himself and the others of his kin free, then led the most aggressive of his companions in a counterattack on their captors.

At the end of the battle, Augustus and those who followed him had already started to show signs of the curse that afflicts elves who spilled blood.

Storm gave them directions to the nearest non human sanctuary and told them to leave but Augustine and the other cursed elves refused and offered to join the dragon's crusade against humanity.

He refused of course, but the elf continued to insist.

Storm even 'threatening to eat them if they didn't get out his sight' didn't shake the will of the elves.

Their bravery and persistence impressed Storm enough that he begrudgingly gave his consent to the elven request.

Augustus had all the characteristics of one of the cursed elves.

The act of killing had stripped all emotions from the elf. This gave him a clarity of thought that most people lacked.

He had a head for tactics, a talent for intrigue and his lack of an emotional moral code meant that he never questioned Storm's commands. And so he quickly became Storm's most trusted agent.

The elf looked up at Storm's face as he replied to his question.

"We're sure, Overlord. My forces inside the city have reported that the announcement for the auction has been going around for weeks."

Stone Helm was one of the largest human cities in the land and was also something of an unofficial capital for the hunters.

With one of the largest non human slave markets in the kingdoms, it was a hotbed of hunter activity, and a monument to human dominance.

Destroying it would send shockwaves through the human civilization. Storm had been eyeing this target for some time, but the opportunity never presented itself.

The city was the permanent residence of many prominent hunter families and that made approaching the city suicide for Storm.

Even during the spring season, when hunter activity in the city was low due to the city's hunters organizing expeditions into the fringes, it still had a large permanent garrison of guardsmen.

However a few weeks ago, Storm started hearing about a prominent auction being organized by the hunters.

Travelers from all across the kingdoms have been streaming into the city , stretching the city guardsmen's forces to breaking point.

"Do we know anything more about what they're bringing into the city for the auction?" Asked Storm.

The elf shook his head.

"We can only guess that it's something very rare based on the kind of clients this auction has been attracting.

Storm nodded his head.

"Probably a young dragon or griffin? Or maybe an Egg?" Thought Storm.

"You've done well, Augustus. This may be just be the opportunity we've been waiting for in order to rid ourselves of this eyesore for good."

"I have your permission to proceed then, Overlord?"

You do! I'll infiltrate the city using my humaniod form, while you and your men secure the barrier crystal located inside the city.
