Because what was being brought forward did not belong in the shape of the moment. Her head hung forward, chin nearly touching her chest. Her hair was matted, tangled, streaked where blood and water had dried together into dark, stiff ropes. Her wrists—visible even at a distance—were marked, the skin broken and darkened in ways no one who had ever seen restraint could mistake. The marks were not fresh; they had been reopened, layered, allowed to sit.

Her body did not respond to the hands holding her. It yielded. Slack. As though whatever had once held her upright had already been taken from her, and the frame beneath was only waiting to follow.

And even from where he stood—Thessian saw it. The damage. Not surface. Not something that could be dismissed. The kind of damage that announces itself to anything that understands violence: the particular stillness of someone who has been broken past the point of holding themselves together.
