The crisp autumn air seeped through the open windows of Classroom 2-B, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and freshly baked bread from the nearby school cafeteria. Sunlight filtered through amber-colored foliage outside, casting warm patches of gold across the wooden desks. For once, the usual classroom chatter was replaced by the rustling of papers, the scraping of brushes, and the quiet hum of creativity.
"Okay, everyone," Mr. Kim's voice rang out, warm but energetic. "Today, we're doing something special. The art club is hosting a one-day challenge! Each of you will be paired into teams to create a seasonal art project - paintings, sketches, or even small sculptures. The best piece will be displayed in the school hall for the autumn festival."
Excited whispers spread through the classroom, and Daewon felt a flicker of nervous anticipation. Art had never been his strong suit, but he wasn't planning to embarrass himself.
He glanced at Aera, who was carefully tying her hair into a braid, a small, serene smile on her lips. She looked… perfect in the soft sunlight, golden strands catching the light.
Then the seating assignments were called.
"Daewon Kang… you're with Jihun and Minji," Mr. Kim announced.
Daewon relaxed slightly. Good, no pressure.
"And Yoo Aera… your partner is Haejin Park."
Daewon froze. Haejin? That calm, artistic boy who seemed to float through life effortlessly? He watched as Aera's eyes brightened at the mention of her partner, and his chest twisted with a small, unfamiliar pang.
"Don't overthink it," he muttered to himself.
The classroom was soon transformed into a bustling creative space. Easels stood in neat rows, buckets of brushes and jars of paint dotted the desks, and the faint smell of watercolor and glue filled the air. Daewon, Minji, and Jihun huddled around a blank canvas, brainstorming ideas.
"Autumn scenery?" Minji suggested. "Leaves, pumpkins, maybe a little stream?"
"Yeah," Daewon agreed. "And maybe we can add the school buildings in the background - people will recognize it."
As they worked, Daewon found himself stealing glances at Aera. She and Haejin moved together with a quiet rhythm, their hands brushing occasionally as they mixed colors, laughed softly, and discussed shading techniques.
Daewon felt a twinge of jealousy, but he shoved it down, focusing instead on the strokes of his brush.
Still, he couldn't help but notice the way Aera's hair caught the sunlight, how her lips curved into a thoughtful smile, or the way she leaned slightly toward Haejin when she spoke. Each small gesture made Daewon's heart thump a little faster, a rhythm he couldn't quite control.
"Hey, Daewon!" Minji nudged him. "Stop staring into space and help with the trees!"
He blinked, flushed slightly, and dipped his brush into a warm orange hue, painting the broad strokes of falling maple leaves.
By midday, the classroom was a riot of colors. Some teams painted giant murals; others created intricate dioramas of autumn forests. Laughter and playful teasing filled the air.
At one point, Aera's brush slipped, smearing a stroke of deep red across the canvas. She looked mortified.
"I ruined it!" she whispered.
Haejin smiled reassuringly. "It's fine. Mistakes make art more alive."
Daewon's chest tightened, and without thinking, he leaned slightly forward, offering a small, encouraging wave. "She'll fix it. You got this."
Aera glanced at him, eyes softening. A tiny smile tugged at her lips before she returned to her work.
As the hours passed, the teams polished their pieces. Daewon, Jihun, and Minji had painted a cozy autumn scene - a small pond reflecting amber trees, a couple of students walking along the path, and a soft golden sunset overhead.
Haejin and Aera's painting was delicate and elegant, full of fine details, each leaf seeming to shimmer with life. Daewon couldn't help but feel a pang - it was beautiful, and he knew Aera had poured her heart into it.
When the bell rang, signaling the end of the challenge, all teams gathered for the final presentation. Each project was displayed proudly at the front of the classroom, students whispering compliments to one another.
"Now, the winners will be chosen by vote," Mr. Kim announced. "But remember - it's not just about skill. Creativity, teamwork, and the feeling your work evokes are all important."
Daewon stole a glance at Aera. She seemed radiant, cheeks flushed, eyes sparkling with excitement. He felt an ache of longing - a mixture of pride and a subtle envy toward Haejin.
As the students cast their votes, Daewon caught Aera's eye across the room. She winked at him subtly, just once, and his heart skipped wildly.
"Whatever happens," she mouthed, "good job today."
Daewon smiled back, fists tightening slightly in silent determination. He didn't care who won - just seeing her happy, just sharing that quiet, fleeting moment, was enough.
When the votes were tallied, the winner was announced - Haejin and Aera's team. Applause erupted, and Aera blushed, bowing slightly with Haejin beside her.
Daewon clapped as loudly as he could, forcing a grin. He felt a pang, but also a surge of admiration. She had done wonderfully, and though he wasn't the one standing next to her, he felt… close.
Later, as the classroom emptied, Daewon lingered. Aera approached him, holding a small brush she had picked up.
"Here," she said softly. "For your next painting. You can use it… or just keep it as a reminder."
He took it, fingers brushing hers ever so lightly. A warm shiver ran down his spine.
"Thanks," he murmured. "I'll… treasure it."
Her cheeks flushed again, and she smiled, looking like the gentle glow of autumn itself. "See you tomorrow?"
Daewon nodded, heart thudding. "Definitely."
And as she walked away, he couldn't help but think - maybe sometimes, even when you're not the one paired with the person you care about, the small moments matter the most.
