Chapter 42 — Stirring the Storm, Movements on All Sides

Konoha Village.

Two intelligence scrolls—identical in content—were delivered almost simultaneously to two very different places:

the Hokage's Office, and deep within Root's underground headquarters, to the so-called "Shadow."

The information was the same.

The reactions could not have been more different.

Hiruzen Sarutobi set the scroll down and took a deep draw from his pipe, his brows knotting into a deep furrow.

The urgent report from Konoha's covert channels sent his heart sinking.

"What…? Wasn't everything going smoothly? How did he suddenly get exposed?" he murmured, unusually shaken.

As a Hokage who had held office for decades, Hiruzen knew better than anyone how difficult it was to embed an effective spy within the Five Great Nations.

Most infiltrators survived only by being painfully cautious—

living as fishermen, merchants, or laborers, their movements restricted, unable to approach true state secrets. The intelligence they sent back was often little more than scattered rumors and daily trivia.

Someone like Namikaze Yami, who had entered the Land of Water under the guise of a traveling merchant and still managed to move with relative freedom, was exceedingly rare—even within Konoha's intelligence division.

"Ah…" Hiruzen sighed, shaking his head.

"That child could have gone far."

He mourned not only the loss of a precious intelligence pipeline, but also the apparent death of a young ninja with extraordinary potential.

Root Headquarters.

The atmosphere here was entirely different.

"Dead?" Danzō Shimura studied the report, a trace of satisfaction flashing through his single eye.

"A clean ending. Efficient."

He strode outside, gazing at the Root operatives busily moving through the compound.

That disobedient piece—Namikaze Yami—had finally exited the board in exactly the way Danzō preferred. His desire for control was thoroughly satisfied.

Though it was regrettable that he had failed to bend such a gifted young man to his will, at least the threat—someone bold enough to reject him outright—had been eliminated.

"Destroy all files related to Namikaze Yami," Danzō ordered without turning around.

"Yes," a Root operative replied emotionlessly.

Meanwhile.

The man officially declared dead was leisurely hiding inside an abandoned warehouse within the Kaguya clan compound.

With his Flying Thunder God markings, he could leave at any moment.

This place was merely a temporary observation post—

a seat in the shadows, watching the storm gather.

Over the next several days, Namikaze Yami quietly witnessed the internal turmoil tearing through the Kaguya clan.

Just as he had predicted, Kaguya Naoto selected two clansmen as scapegoats and handed them over to the Mizukage as a so-called "explanation."

At this very moment, a solemn funeral was being held in the central square of the clan compound.

"Kaguya Rategi. Kaguya Tōbaidan,"

Kaguya Naoto stood before the two coffins, his voice heavy with grief.

"They gave their lives for the survival of the Kaguya clan. Their sacrifice will be remembered forever."

Yami watched coldly from the shadows.

This sanctimonious ritual was nothing more than a farce.

Those two clansmen had been secretly executed the night before.

One of their residences was not far from Yami's hiding place. He had heard everything—the brief struggle, the desperate pleas that went unanswered.

When the funeral ended, the Kaguya dispersed in silence. Yami noted several young clansmen whose faces were etched with resentment and rage. The rift between the Kaguya clan and Kirigakure's leadership was quietly widening.

---

While Yami lay in wait, Konoha Village was struck by shocking news.

Fresh from finishing a surgery, Tsunade froze as the report reached her ears.

"You said… what?"

The medical record slipped from her hand and fell to the floor.

"Chūnin Namikaze Yami was exposed during a mission in Kirigakure…"

The messenger lowered his head.

"His death has been… essentially confirmed."

Yami was an orphan, with no direct family in the village. His closest ties were fellow youths. Through a twist of fate, the news ultimately reached the Senju clan—and Tsunade.

She stood motionless, images flashing through her mind:

his sly smile,

the bracelet he'd given her before leaving,

the certainty in his voice when he promised he'd return safely.

That night, for once, Tsunade did not go on duty at the hospital.

She sat alone in her usual tavern.

"Bring the drinks."

One cup followed another as she tried to drown her thoughts in alcohol—but his presence only grew clearer.

When the bracelet caught the lamplight and shimmered softly, she finally buried her face in her hands.

"…Liar," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Meanwhile, in Kirigakure, Yami's operation continued.

After days of observation, he identified his next target:

Kaguya Kōjin—a highly respected young elite within the clan.

Straightforward by nature and openly dissatisfied with Kaguya Naoto's appeasement policy, Kōjin was a representative of the clan's radical faction.

Late at night, Yami slipped into Kōjin's residence and left a letter on his desk.

The letter "exposed" the Mizukage's alleged plan to gradually weaken the Kaguya clan and hinted that the clan head had secretly aligned himself with the village leadership—sacrificing clansmen to preserve his own position.

At the same time, Yami adopted another identity, quietly spreading rumors throughout the clan.

Kaguya Rategi and Kaguya Tōbaidan, he claimed, were merely substitutes.

The real culprit was a senior elder protected by Kaguya Naoto himself—all to conceal secret collusion with foreign villages.

The effect was immediate.

Within days, Kirigakure's surveillance on the Kaguya clan intensified, while internal resentment within the clan surged.

The relationship between the village and the Kaguya had become oil and fire—one spark away from total explosion.

Yami summoned the system interface, his gaze scanning the long list of exchangeable items before stopping at two he had long decided upon.

[Yuki Clan Bloodline — Cost: 600 points]

[Dense Kaguya Clan Bloodline — Cost: 500 points]

"Exchange."

[Current Pawn Points: 2870]

The system deducted 1,100 points, and an intense chill surged through his body.

Prepared for complications, Yami had already relocated to an uninhabited area within the Land of Water.

The temperature around him plummeted as the awakened bloodline released its natural cold.

He felt his chakra's nature subtly shifting.

Raising his hand, a diamond-shaped ice crystal slowly formed in his palm.

He would need time to fully master the Yuki clan's secret techniques—but this was already more than enough.

The two greatest bloodlines of Kirigakure…

had now converged within a single body.

Yet just as he savored his newfound power, Kagura's Mind Eye flared with warning.

An unfamiliar chakra was approaching rapidly.

It seemed merely to be passing by—but it was unmistakably different from that of Kirigakure's shinobi.

The distance was great, the sensing vague even at full focus.

Yami immediately concealed himself, eyes sharp as he looked toward the source.

An unexpected figure

was heading straight toward the heart of the Land of Water.
