Chapter 26: THE FIRST BOND
The bond chamber was a repurposed storage room in the basement.
Not grand. Not mystical. Just cleared space with System-enhanced equipment I'd built over two days. A circle etched into concrete. Two chairs facing each other. Lighting that didn't flicker.
Ruth looked around. "This is it?"
"The System says we need focused concentration. Mutual intention. Physical proximity. This achieves that."
"Sounds like meditation."
"Basically is."
We sat. Facing each other. Close enough that our knees almost touched.
The System provided instructions only I could see:
[INITIATING RESONANCE BOND]
[CANDIDATE: RUTH TORRES]
[POWER: SUPER STRENGTH (GAMMA-CLASS)]
[COST: 100 RESONANCE POINTS]
[CONFIRM EXPENDITURE?]
Yes.
[BOND PROCESS BEGINNING]
[BOTH PARTIES MUST CONSENT]
[HOST: FOCUS ON CONNECTION]
[CANDIDATE: FOCUS ON TRUST]
I explained what would happen. The meditation. The connection. That she'd feel something but it wouldn't hurt.
"Ready?" I asked.
"Let's do it."
I closed my eyes. Focused on Ruth. Not as super-strength. As person. Ruth who'd challenged me in the church basement. Who'd given me thirty days. Who'd stood beside me when guns fired. Who'd trusted me with her community.
Trust flowed both ways. I trusted her with my life. With these people. With the truth about the System.
Something shifted. A sensation like—like recognizing someone in a crowd. Awareness of connection.
Ruth's breath caught. "I feel—something."
"Stay with it."
The connection deepened. I could sense her strength now. Not physically. But aware of it. Like knowing someone's name without being told.
[BOND ESTABLISHING...]
[TIER 1 (FAINT) FORMING...]
[CONNECTION STABLE]
[BOND COMPLETE]
[RESONANCE BOND: RUTH TORRES] [TIER: 1 (FAINT)] [POWER TRANSFER: 20%] [DAILY LIMIT: 1 HOUR] [STATUS: ACTIVE]
I opened my eyes. Ruth was staring at her hands.
"Did it work?" she asked.
"One way to find out."
I activated the bond. Mentally reached for that connection we'd just formed. Pulled.
Power flooded into me.
Not subtle. Not gradual. Just—THERE. Strength beyond anything I'd ever experienced. My muscles didn't strain. Didn't burn. Just existed in a state of ready capability.
I stood. Walked to a steel beam we'd left in the corner for testing. Hundred pounds, maybe more. I'd need both hands and effort to move it normally.
I picked it up one-handed. No strain. No effort. Light as a broom handle.
"Jesus," Ruth said.
I laughed. Couldn't help it. The sheer absurdity of it. Me—terrible fighter, barely athletic Marcus—holding a steel beam like it was nothing.
"How much can you lift normally?" I asked.
"Twenty tons. Give or take."
"I'm probably at four tons then. Twenty percent."
I set the beam down. Looked at my hands. Still shaking slightly. Not from fear now. From power.
Ruth stood. Approached. "You feel different. I can see it. The way you're standing. More—solid."
"I feel incredible."
"Yeah. That's the dangerous part." She punched my shoulder. Friendly. Controlled. I barely felt it.
"Still can't hit worth a damn though," she said.
We both laughed. The tension breaking.
"How long does it last?" she asked.
"One hour per day at this tier. After that, it fades."
"And you can just—activate it whenever?"
"Within the daily limit, yes."
She nodded slowly. "That's going to be useful. When things go bad."
"If things go bad."
"When. You're building a mutant nation, Marcus. Things will go bad."
She had a point.
We spent the next forty minutes testing. I could lift about four tons consistently. Couldn't throw James—he weighed too much—but could move objects that would normally require multiple people. My durability increased too. Ruth punched me—harder this time. Hurt, but didn't break anything.
"Enhanced durability transfers too," I said. "Not just strength."
"Makes sense. They're part of the same package."
At fifty-eight minutes, I felt the bond begin to fade. Like a muscle getting tired. Except it wasn't my muscle—it was the connection itself.
At sixty minutes exactly, the power cut off.
I stumbled. Not from pain. Just from sudden normalcy. Four tons to zero in an instant. My body felt weak by comparison.
"You okay?" Ruth asked.
"Yeah. Just—it's weird coming back down."
"Welcome to my life. Except I never come down."
"That must be—"
"Exhausting sometimes. Yeah."
We left the bond chamber. Walked back to the compound proper. Neither of us spoke for a while.
Finally, Ruth said, "You're going to bond others. Danny. Sofia. More."
"If they agree. I have four slots total."
"Will you tell them about the System? Like you told me?"
"I don't know. Probably. They deserve to know what they're agreeing to."
"Good answer." She paused. "Marcus, this changes things. You having actual power. Being able to fight."
"I know."
"Don't let it make you stupid. You're still not a fighter. Four tons of strength doesn't make you invincible. You can still be shot. Stabbed. Burned. Don't get cocky."
"Noted."
"I'm serious. I've seen strong people die because they thought strength was enough. It's not. You still need to be smart."
"I will be."
She didn't look convinced but let it drop.
That night, I lay in bed feeling normal again. Weak. Human. But not the same.
I had access to power now. Real, usable power. And Ruth knew about the System. Partially. Enough.
The secret was starting to crack. Eventually everyone would know something. Not everything—never everything. But enough to understand what I was building. And what I was willing to do to build it.
The System pulsed quietly.
[FIRST BOND ESTABLISHED]
[BOND TIER: 1]
[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +350]
[RELATIONSHIP WITH RUTH TORRES: DEEPENED]
[NEW QUEST AVAILABLE: ESTABLISH SECOND BOND]
[RECOMMENDATION: DIVERSIFY POWER ACCESS]
Tomorrow. I'd think about second bonds tomorrow.
Tonight, I'd sleep knowing I wasn't powerless anymore.
Four tons of borrowed strength. One hour per day. Limited. Conditional.
But real.
