When Ashaell lifted her head from Kael's shoulder, the vulnerable look in her eyes changed in an instant. It took Kael a moment to realize what was happening once he saw the change on her face; Ashaell could sense the fluctuations of mana around her better than Kael could.Footsteps and angry shouts began to echo through the dungeon's corridors as if someone were running.
Zadil's men were coming.
Ashaell locked eyes with Kael.
"It seems..." she said, her voice returning to that assassin's coldness; she gripped her dagger in a reverse grip.
"...our reunion will be brief. Zadil's men are heading this way—it's only a matter of time before they find their master's body. We must meet them."
Kael pulled his mask back over his face. "You said you'd mastered shadow magic,"A defiant smile appeared on Ashaell's face. Her silver tattoos glowed brighter.
"Follow me, Kael."
As the first group of guards emerged from the corridor's darkness, Ashaell turned into a shadow. Literally. Her body blurred for an instant, gliding through the darkness to dart right behind the first guard. Her dagger sliced toward the man's throat, leaving a trail of shadow in its wake. But Zadil's men were prepared. One of the guards noticed Ashaell's attack and raised his shield at the last moment. The dagger slid across the metal shield, sparks flying. As Ashaell lunged to get behind the man's shield, another guard swung his spear at her.
Ashaell had nowhere to run... until a fireball lit up the corridor.
Kael had expanded his Mana Field, sensing every move the guards made in advance. The moment he saw Ashaell in trouble, he extended his hands forward and sent the mana-charged fireball toward the spear-wielding guard. The fire instantly scorched the man's spear and armor, sending him flying backward.
Ashaell immediately capitalized on the opening Kael had created. Using the spear-wielding guard's fall, she made another strike from the shadows at the unguarded side of the shield-wielding guard. The dagger had found its mark this time.
The two moved in perfect coordination. Kael's fire spells made Ashaell's shadows more distinct and sharper. Ashaell, in turn, transformed these sharp shadows into weapons and escape routes.
A group of guards, continuing to advance one after another, lunged toward Kael. Kael swung his sword, parrying the attacks of the first two. However, the third man was about to break Kael's guard with a heavy axe. As Kael tried to focus his Mana into his sword, there were only seconds left before the axe came down.
At that moment, the guard's own shadow, as if come to life, wrapped itself around the man's wrist. Ashaell locked the man's movement with a shadow claw. With the guard's axe suspended in midair, Kael lunged at the man's exposed chest
From behind the falling guard's body, Kael sensed Ashaell's next target. At the end of the corridor, Ashaell was trying to confuse the two guards with shadow illusions. The men were swinging empty sword strikes at the dancing shadow figures around them, but they couldn't locate Ashaell's true position.
Kael realized, using his Mana Field, that Ashaell had cornered the two guards. Reaching out, he cast the two-circle spell "Rising Pillars of Flame," sealing off the guards' escape route. Ashaell appeared right behind the cornered guards. The dagger that leapt from the shadows finished off both guards with a single, smooth strike.
Shadow and Fire danced in terrifying harmony in this dark corridor of the dungeon. Kael's fiery attacks exposed the enemies, panicked them, and illuminated the corridor. Ashaell, meanwhile, used the sharp shadows cast by this light to move like a ghost, striking at the enemies' most vital points when they least expected it.But more men were emerging from the corridor's darkness. Zadil's elite assassins were faster and more dangerous than the guards. When Ashaell sensed this new threat, she turned toward Kael:
"Kael! Put out your flames!"
Kael hadn't fully grasped Ashaell's intent. He extinguished the fireballs illuminating the corridor and waited for Ashaell's move
The corridor was suddenly engulfed in darkness. A dark elf's true terrifying power was revealed in the pitch-black darkness.
Ashaell vanished into the darkness. Before the assassins could figure out where She was, they fell one by one under the blows of the dagger emerging from the shadows. Ashaell moved so swiftly that her movements could only be discerned by the faint ripples of wind felt in the dungeon.
When the last assassin fell to the ground, Kael illuminated the dungeon once more with a fire spell.
Ashaell reappeared from the darkness right beside Kael. As she sheathed her dagger, her breathing seemed slightly faster.
"Not bad," said Ashaell, her voice tinged with sarcasm, yet carrying a note of genuine admiration.
Ashaell's eyes were fixed on Kael's mask.
"You were someone who didn't even know what magic was—what kind of training did you undergo in just one year, Kael?"she remarked.
"It's incredible that you've developed your fire magic to this extent, Kael."
Kael took off his mask again. His face bore the traces of the adrenaline from that synchronized battle; his eyes shone with admiration at Ashaell's power and skill.
"Your shadow magic..." Kael said,
"It was incredible, Ashaell! It was nearly impossible to track your movements—you were moving so fast that I couldn't even sense you with my mana field."
Before the dungeon of the dark elves lay the corpses of Zadil and his men, once feared. The dance of Shadow and Fire was one of the deadliest harmonies this dark dungeon had ever witnessed.Just then, footsteps echoed from the entrance of the corridor. Noel and Marten burst through the smoky corridor and rushed inside.
"Rosvill!" Noel shouted, her voice trembling with worry.
"Rosvil, are you okay? What's goin—"
Noel's sentence trailed off. Both of them froze in their tracks at the sight before them. A few meters away, Zadil's elite men and corpses scattered throughout the corridor... All of them had been neutralized with a single blow.Marten's eyes widened in shock as he stared at the floor, now a pool of blood.
"W-what the hell is this?" he muttered, his voice filled with horror.
"Did you... did you take care of all of them... Rosvil, all by yourself?"
Noel's face went pale as she focused on a body on the ground with an eye patch.
"Wait a minute... That guy lying there... Isn't that Zadil? Did you really finish off that scum?"
But Noel's eyes shifted in the next instant to the stranger standing beside Kael—a dark elf with silver tattoos, clad in a black cloak and radiating a savage aura. To Noel, he was an immediate threat. Without a second thought, Noel sprang into action
"Rosvil, behind you!" Noel shouted.
She drew her dagger from its sheath and lunged swiftly at Ashaell.Ashaell's reaction was incredible; before Noel could even swing her dagger, Ashaell vanished like a shadow. As Noel was flung into the void, she suddenly felt a cold breath on her back. Ashaell had materialized right behind Noel as if she hadn't moved at all. She pressed her dagger against Noel's throat.
"Ashaell, wait!"
Kael stepped forward to intervene and raised his hand, stopping both of them."Stop! Both of you, lower your weapons!"Noel froze under the pressure of the dagger against her throat.
"She's my friend, Noel, Ashaell. A friend I haven't seen in years."
"Ashaell, it's clear this is a misunderstanding. Please sheathe your dagger."
Ashaell stepped back slightly at Kael's reaction and sheathed her dagger.Noel was still reeling from the shock. she took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. It would take time to process this mysterious elf warrior standing beside Kael.
"I..."
"I apologize for my aggression. I thought Rosvil's life was in danger."
Ashaell looked at Kael with a puzzled expression. "Rosvil?"Kael thought to himself, He's clearly trying to hide his real name and identity—I'd better not give anything away.Ashaell crossed her arms over her chest and shot Kael a sidelong glance.
"Your friends are a bit too panicky, Rosvil. But at least they're polite."
Kael breathed a sigh of relief as the tense atmosphere eased slightly.
"I'm glad we understand each other..." he said with a smile.
Marten: "We can't stay here any longer. We need to get the prisoners out—some of them are in critical condition. We have to hurry, Noel."
Ashaell: "If you'd like, I can teleport you and the prisoners all at once to the exit using elven magic."
Marten: "Ah, that would be a huge help. Thank you."
Kael: "Ashaell, what about you?"
"I'll take those of my own kind. The place for dark elves is with their tribes."
The prisoners had been transported to a safe area. At the exit of the ruins, the sun was just rising. Kael and Ashaell stood at the exit of the dungeon.
Ashaell adjusted her cloak and looked at Kael one last time. Even though they hadn't seen each other in years, the bond between them was strong.
"I need to return to my tribe. Have I completed my mission here?"
Ashaell reached out and placed her hand over Kael's. Their fingers touched the moon-engraved ring.
"I thought I'd be alone in the forest again, but this time, our paths won't be drawn by the Forest—they'll be drawn by the promises we've made," said Ashaell, her eyes locked on Kael's.
"No matter where you are... we will meet again someday. Promise me."
Kael gripped Ashaell's hand tightly:
"I promise. No matter where you are, I'll be by your side again."
After Ashaell left with the elf captives, Kael stared into the void for a moment.Inside him lay the sorrow of the friend he had just parted with, and that unshakable belief that they would be reunited. Kael took a deep breath and put his mask back on. There were still
many paths to walk and many battles to fight.
But this time, he wasn't alone.
