"I..." Adele's fingers twisted in the bedsheet and she bit the inside of her cheek while considering her replies. She can't tell him the truth. So she bailed out. "It's just part of my etiquette lessons."
Ilya didn't buy it. He saw consequences of many failed lessons, and this was nothing like it. "That must be a nasty punishment."
So, he tried again with a frown. "Then, what happened to your face?"
"That was... I walked into a door. The edge of it. Stupid, really...."
Ilya exhaled helplessly while wondering what game the princess was playing. How he sees it, she was clearly lying. Why is she protecting them? It didn't make sense no matter how he thought about it. All this was super-confusing and frustating. But even among all his whirlwind of emotions, Ilya wished to keep Adele safe.
