Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Tianxuan Trials

By the twenty-fifth day of their journey, the group reached the foothills of Tianxuan Sect. A colossal jade archway stood before them, carved with dragons and phoenixes. Spirit qi poured from the peaks, and floating pavilions hung above the clouds.

Exclamations filled the carriages. Lin Feng leaned out, eyes wide. "It's massive—like a city carved from clouds! Those pavilions are floating!"

Lin Xue nodded vigorously. "And the qi—it's so dense! My meridians are tingling already, Big Sister!"

Su Qingyao, seated beside Lin Chen in the lead carriage, smiled softly, her hand resting in his. "Tianxuan's outer sect harnesses natural arrays to gather essence. The inner sect is even more profound—hidden peaks with ancient caves and true inheritances."

Lin Chen gazed ahead, his dragon soul humming faintly in response to the ambient power, as if recognizing an old ally. "We've arrived with time to spare. The recruitment gates open in two days—use it for rest and acclimation."

The elders in the rear carriage shared nods of approval. "Young Master, the outer sect functions like a vast academy—lecture halls for alchemy, formations, and beast lore; mission pavilions for point-based rewards. The inner sect is more traditional—masters select apprentices for personalized guidance and secret arts."

As they descended into the foothill town at the sect's base, the road widened into a bustling thoroughfare. Inns overflowed with aspirants from across the Eastern Domain—young cultivators with eager faces, families in caravans laden with gifts, lone wanderers with determined strides. Vendors hawked "entry essentials": low-grade spirit pills, protective talismans, even dubious "recommendation scrolls" promising shortcuts.

Lin Chen secured rooms at a quieter inn on the town's edge, away from the chaotic market square. Over a simple dinner in a private chamber—spirit rice, herb-infused stew, and fresh fruits—the group discussed strategy. "The trials are threefold," one elder explained. "First, the Body Gate—endurance under qi pressure. Second, the Spirit Gate—illusion arrays testing perception. Third, the Will Gate—heart demons that amplify inner doubts."

Lin Feng clenched his fist. "I'm ready! With Young Master's training, we'll pass."

Lin Xue looked a bit nervous but resolute. "What if sacred bodies like Big Sister's get special treatment?"

Su Qingyao shook her head. "No shortcuts. Even sacred bodies must prove themselves—though they often attract inner sect scouts."

Lin Chen addressed them calmly. "Focus on your strengths. Feng, your stamina will shine in the Body Gate. Xue, your focus breaks illusions. We'll support each other—no one falls behind."

The disciples nodded, dispersing to meditate and rest. Lin Chen and Su Qingyao retired to their room—a modest space with a wide window framing the sect's distant glow. She lit a stick of calming incense, its fragrance mingling with the essence-rich air. "It's real now," she murmured, standing by the window. "Tianxuan... our new beginning."

He came up behind her, arms wrapping around her waist. "Scared?"

"A little," she admitted, leaning back into him. "Not for the trials—for what comes after. The outer sect is like an academy, thousands competing for resources. What if we're separated in dorms?"

Lin Chen turned her to face him. "We will ask for adjacent rooms if the sect allows it. Even if we are separated, we will still be together in spirit." They shared a brief kiss, their qi mingling as his golden warmth met her cool frost. The quiet moment eased her worry about the trials ahead.

The next day brought scouting. The group hiked to the sect's outer gates—a colossal archway of ancient jade, carved with coiling dragons, phoenixes, and runes that pulsed with qi. Beyond lay the outer sect campuses: sprawling like a grand academy, with jade stone lecture halls echoing with distant chants, mission pavilions bustling with disciples exchanging points for treasures, tiered dormitories climbing the hillsides, and open arenas where rankings were contested daily. Spirit qi waterfalls cascaded upward, floating islands served as elite training grounds, and the air hummed with the vitality of thousands cultivating.

A blue-robed guide disciple, noticing their group's interest, explained politely. "The outer sect is designed for foundational growth—like a vast academy. Daily lectures on alchemy, formations, combat, and beast taming. Earn points through missions—hunting spirit beasts, gathering herbs, or guarding outposts—to redeem pills, techniques, or even inner sect recommendations. The top performers ascend to the inner sect: secluded peaks, personal masters, cave mansions with ancient inheritances, and true legacy arts."

Lin Feng's eyes sparkled. "Sounds like paradise! How many make it to inner?"

The guide smiled. "Few—only the elite. Competition is fierce, but fair. Sacred bodies or bloodlines often catch elders' eyes."

The crowd around the gates was diverse: thousands of aspirants, some radiating sacred auras (flame, thunder, wood), others backed by family elders with anxious expressions. Subtle rivalries brewed—glances at Su Qingyao's ethereal beauty, whispers about Lin Chen's composed demeanor and the faint, unplaceable pressure he exuded.

A minor incident occurred near the gate: a haughty youth from a mid-tier family, Early Innate with a flame emblem on his robe, intentionally bumped Lin Feng while passing. "Watch your step, small-city bumpkin. Tianxuan isn't for the weak."

Lin Feng bristled, hand twitching toward his sword. "You—"

Lin Chen placed a calming hand on his shoulder. "Ignore it. Save your energy for the real tests."

The youth sneered, eyeing Su Qingyao with undisguised interest. "Wise words. But beauty like hers might attract better protectors in the sect."

Su Qingyao's gaze turned icy. "I have the best protector already."

The youth laughed but backed off, melting into the crowd. Lin Chen exchanged a glance with her. "First of many. Stay vigilant."

Back at the inn, they reviewed the encounter over lunch. "That's how it starts," one elder said. "Rivals probe weaknesses. In the outer sect, alliances form and break over points."

Lin Chen nodded. "We'll form our own—stick together in missions, share knowledge."

Nights before the trials were restless but productive: group meditations to acclimate to the denser qi, shared reviews of basic techniques. Lin Chen and Su Qingyao stole moments on the inn's rooftop, overlooking the glowing peaks. "Nervous?" he asked again, arms around her as the wind whispered through her hair.

"A bit more now," she confessed. "The gates test everything—body, spirit, will. What if my ice body draws too much attention?"

He kissed her forehead. "It will. But that's our advantage. We'll turn eyes into allies."

They shared a brief kiss. Their qi mingled, steadying her as she neared Late Innate and helping him consolidate his peak. For a moment, the coming trials seemed less daunting.

Trial day dawned with electric energy. Thousands gathered before the gates, air humming with qi formations activating. Blue-robed elders on raised platforms announced: "Pass the three gates for outer sect entry. Exceptional talents may attract inner sect scouts. Begin!"

The first gate: a massive qi arch emitting crushing pressure. Weak aspirants collapsed immediately, foaming at the mouth. Lin group's disciples gritted through—Lin Feng's stamina shining, Lin Xue's focus holding. Lin Chen walked effortlessly, dragon soul countering like a gentle breeze. Su Qingyao's ice aura formed a protective veil, her steps light.

Second gate: an illusion array—visions assaulting senses. Fears manifested: Lin Feng saw family ruin, sweating but pushing forward with thoughts of home. Lin Xue faced isolation, drawing strength from group memories. Lin Chen envisioned Su Qingyao's abduction—heart clenching in pain, but he shattered it with will. Su Qingyao saw Lin Chen's death, tears streaming, but emerged resolute, whispering, "For us."

Third gate: the heart demon mirror—amplifying inner doubts. Whispers of failure, betrayal. All endured, emerging stronger.

Announcements echoed: "Lin Chen, Su Qingyao—top-tier scores! Sacred bodies detected (ice essence, hidden dragon aura). Direct inner sect candidate evaluation. Others: outer sect entry!"

Cheers from the group. Jealous mutters from rivals: "Wait for the inner trials—they're brutal."

At the inn celebration—wine, feasts—Lin Chen pulled Su Qingyao aside to a balcony. "Our path opens."

She smiled through happy tears. "Together, forever."

Tianxuan's world unfolded; greater horizons beckoned.
