Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Beneath the Frostline

The bell's note had scarcely faded when the path behind them vanished.

Mist poured between the rock walls, filling the narrow pass. Lin Chen extended his hand, but the fog swallowed it at the wrist. Su Qingyao remained beside him; he could feel the cool edge of her sleeve against his arm.

"Stay close," he said.

"I'm here."

They walked slowly, counting their steps. The black marks on the stone appeared at regular intervals, each one shaped like the sun and crescent. Unlike the seal in the serpent ravine, these marks were not fresh. Their edges had been worn smooth by centuries of rain.

A thin frost gathered on Su Qingyao's lashes. She stopped.

"Do you hear that?" she asked.

Lin Chen listened. At first he heard only the wind moving through the pass. Then, beneath it, a second sound: a soft flutter, like wings brushing over snow.

The fog thinned around Su Qingyao. Blue-white light traced the lines of her fingers. She stared at her hand, unsettled by the light rather than afraid of it.

"Qingyao."

"I can feel something below us." Her voice came out quieter than before. "It's calling through the ice."

A narrow crack opened in the ground at their feet. Cold air rose from the darkness below, carrying the scent of ancient water. Lin Chen tested the stone. It held.

They descended through a passage barely wide enough for one person. The walls were smooth and glimmered faintly with frozen mineral veins. At the bottom lay a chamber sealed beneath the mountain. Its ceiling had collapsed in one corner, letting a blade of daylight fall across a low altar.

The air changed as soon as they crossed the threshold. It was colder than the mist outside, yet the cold did not bite. It settled over the skin like a remembered winter. Lin Chen felt the dragon qi in his body draw inward, cautious for the first time since its awakening.

Su Qingyao reached for the wall. Her fingertips brushed the frost, and a pattern unfolded beneath them: overlapping feathers, each one finer than the last. She withdrew her hand.

"It knows me," she whispered.

Lin Chen wanted to ask what she meant, but the words would have turned her uncertainty into something heavier. He only moved closer, giving her room to choose whether to continue.

She took a breath and stepped toward the altar.

A feather rested on the altar.

It was pale as winter moonlight, yet a soft blue flame burned along its edge. Su Qingyao approached as if drawn by a memory she could not name.

The moment she reached for it, the chamber filled with wind.

She saw a snowy plain beneath unfamiliar stars. A woman stood on a ridge with vast wings of ice and light folded behind her. The woman's face was hidden, but her voice carried clearly.

"When the frost remembers, seek the sky beyond the old border."

The vision ended. Su Qingyao swayed. Lin Chen caught her before she struck the altar.

"Did she hurt you?" he asked.

"No." She looked at the feather, now resting in her palm. "I think she wanted me to hear."

A faint blue mark had appeared at her wrist, shaped like a feather caught inside a circle. It faded when Lin Chen touched it, but the cold lingered beneath her skin.

He looked toward the chamber's far wall. A mural had emerged from the frost: a golden dragon coiled above a field of stars, beside a great bird whose wings were spread against a pale moon.

The figures faced the same darkness.

Beneath them, someone had carved a line in an old script. Lin Chen could not read the words, but the dragon soul stirred as if it remembered them.

Su Qingyao wrapped the feather in cloth. "We should tell Elder Yun."

"We will." Lin Chen glanced toward the entrance. "But first we need to get out of here."

Above them, the bell rang a second time.

The chamber shivered. A hairline crack ran through the altar, and from somewhere beyond the wall came the scrape of stone against stone.
