Twenty minutes seemed to pass more slowly than an hour.
When Emmett finally returned, his hair slightly ruffled and the top three buttons of his shirt undone, the knots in Severine's nerves finally loosened.
"Done checking?" he asked, plopping down directly onto the small table.
His eyes darted toward the bald manager, who stood stiffly off to the side, trembling slightly when he felt the sharp gaze on him.
Meanwhile, Damien occupied the only other chair in the small, shabby cottage.
"Yeah," Severine let out a soft sigh. "It's a mess."
According to the papers, this cottage should have been equipped with at least five rooms. Instead, there was barely enough space for two people to sit while the others were forced to stand.
As for where the money had gone, she looked at the manager's big belly and fell silent.
