Inoichi had just opened Naruto's door when he suddenly felt a chill down his spine. He slowly turned around and met Hiashi's icy, white gaze.
"What a coincidence, Inoichi." Hiashi's voice was frighteningly calm, and his fingers had quietly pressed against the door frame. "I didn't expect to run into you here."
A layer of cold sweat immediately broke out on Inoichi's back. His toes unconsciously retreated half a step. "Clan Head Hiashi, what a coincidence! I... I was just..."
"Just here to look for your daughter?" Hiashi meticulously smoothed his cuffs. "Me too. Why don't we... wait together? We can catch up while we're at it."
He suddenly pushed Inoichi into Naruto's house. Inoichi only felt a gentle force shove him into the room, and the door slammed shut with a "bang." He stiffly turned around and found Hiashi already sitting casually at the dining table.
"Sit." Without lifting his head, Hiashi pointed to the chair in front of him. "Since you're here, why don't we talk about what happened last time in the forest..."
Inoichi's Adam's apple bobbed. He cautiously shuffled over to the dining table and sat down. The two middle-aged men faced off across the small table. Hiashi's fingertips lightly tapped the tabletop, each tap seemingly striking Inoichi's nerves.
In the small kitchen, Naruto was stir-frying; the sound of the spatula clanging was accompanied by the savory aroma of ginger and soy. Hinata and Hanabi had been dragged out by Ino to buy drinks and snacks. Just as the three girls had left, their fathers arrived one after another.
Just as the two men sat in awkward silence, the door was suddenly pushed open again.
"Naruto, Grandpa is here to see you." The Sandaime, smelling the aroma of the food, knew he had arrived just in time for dinner. Carrying a fresh fish, he pushed open the door, only to see Hiashi and Inoichi turn their heads.
The three Konoha heavyweights stared at each other in the cramped living room. Six eyes met, and the air seemed to solidify.
Why is Sandaime here? Hiashi and Inoichi thought simultaneously. They had planned to find their daughters and then speak with Naruto alone, but they never expected to walk into a full summit of the village leadership.
Sandaime watched them exchanging meaningful looks, his brow furrowing. Since when were the Hyuga and Yamanaka on such good terms? It can't just be a coincidence.
"Sandaime Grandpa, two Uncles, I've finished cooking. Should I go buy some beer for you?" Naruto's voice came from the kitchen.
The three heavyweights froze, then nodded in unison. Perhaps at the dinner table, they could better gauge each other's intentions. After serving the food, Naruto left to buy the alcohol.
"What are you two doing here..." Hiruzen Sarutobi asked once he was sure Naruto was out of range.
"We came to look for our daughters," Hiashi replied honestly.
Sandaime nodded. He knew Naruto's group of friends often came over. In truth, Hiruzen's initial favorite candidate for Naruto's wife had been Sakura Haruno. She was a commoner. Just as Kushina married Minato—who came from nothing—Sandaime hoped Naruto's wife would be someone without a heavy family background to keep the boy grounded in the village.
But the children didn't click.
Deep in his heart, the Third Hokage let out a heavy sigh. Everything is fate. His thoughts drifted back twelve years to the ruins of the Nine-Tails' rampage. He had made a solemn vow to ensure Minato and Kushina's child grew up safely. He had even initially prohibited the use of "Uzumaki" or "Namikaze," hoping an ordinary name would grant Naruto a stable life.
However, things had not gone as planned. Rumors spread like a plague—likely fueled by Danzo. Villagers called the boy the "Demon Fox." To protect him, Hiruzen had to suppress the rumors and officially grant him the "Uzumaki" name, hoping the legacy of Konoha's closest ally would evoke sympathy.
Instead, it had brought twelve years of cold shoulders.
I... truly am old, Hiruzen thought, his expression growing grim. His body was aging, and his mind felt heavy with the weight of decades of compromises.
Seeing the Third Hokage sitting in such a dark, brooding mood, Hiashi and Inoichi held their breath. They exchanged cautious glances, neither daring to speak. Why did the old man's mood plummet so suddenly?
A suffocating silence fell over the house. Yet, in that silence, the same thought echoed in the minds of both fathers:
Why isn't Naruto back yet?!
