I didn't tell Damian about Victor's call.
Not immediately. Not that night when he came home at seven with Thai takeout and found me still at the kitchen table surrounded by notes. Not when we ate pad thai straight from the containers while Isla threw rice noodles on the floor from her high chair. Not when we gave her a bath together and she splashed water all over my shirt, laughing like it was the best game ever invented.
I kept it locked behind my teeth like something sharp.
The email came at eleven pm while I was lying in bed pretending to read.
