Chapter 99 - Hammer Against Chaos

Seth stepped through the reinforced threshold as the heavy control room doors hissed shut behind him with a resonant thud, sealing the cooler, sterile air of the main sanctum away. The transition was immediate and deliberate. He moved with purposeful strides down the short connecting corridor that linked the primary engineering bay to the forging chamber, a specialized wing he had integrated directly into the control nexus for maximum efficiency. The ambient lighting shifted from cool blue-white to a deep, fiery amber as he approached, the temperature climbing steadily with every step.

He palmed the access plate. The forge chamber doors thick slabs of reinforced adamantine alloy etched with heat-dispersal runes, parted with a low, rumbling groan. A wall of scorching air rolled out to greet him like a living thing, carrying the sharp bite of superheated metal, molten alloys, and the acrid tang of corrupted demonic essence. Sweat beaded instantly on his skin beneath the sleek black undersuit he wore, but Seth only smiled, embracing the burn. This was where true creation happened. Not in clean labs or sterile simulations, but in the heart of controlled chaos.

The forging chamber sprawled before him, a cathedral of industry and arcane mastery. Towering industrial forges lined the walls, their cores pulsing with contained plasma and mana flame. Overhead, massive exhaust vents hummed as they battled to vent excess heat, while intricate networks of cooling pipes snaked across the ceiling like metallic veins. At the rear of the chamber, suspended in an automated smithing array, hung the partially forged pieces of the Vaelrix bio-chassis. Each segment: breastplate, arm harnesses and leg harnesses, hovered in its own dedicated forging station, held aloft by anti-gravity clamps and encircled by dormant robotic arms.

But something was wrong.

As Seth drew closer, the oppressive aura hit him like a physical force. Dark, chaotic energy bled from the Vaelrix components in thick, oily waves. It wasn't mere heat. This was something deeper malevolent, suffocating, and hungry. The air around the chassis shimmered with thermal distortion, laced with threads of pitch-black corruption that twisted like living smoke. The metal surfaces, only half-formed, pulsed with an unnatural violet-black radiance, rejecting the harmonious runes that should have bound them.

"Stubborn as always, aren't you?" Seth murmured, leaning in toward the central breastplate. The half-smithied piece dominated the array, its curved surface etched with incomplete infernal sigils that seemed to writhe under his gaze. He placed a gloved hand near it, feeling the repulsive pressure push back against his palm.

No matter what, I'll make you bend.

The thought burned hotter than the surrounding air. This was no ordinary material. The Vaelrix bio-chassis had been harvested from the raw demonic shell of a fallen great demon powerful, ancient, and viciously resistant to subjugation. Seth respected that. He also intended to break it.

"Aid," he called out, voice steady despite the rising discomfort. "What seems to be the stall here?"

The AI's calm, synthesized voice filled the chamber through hidden speakers. "Reporting: Unfortunately, the registered energy signature from the demon raw shell has intercepted the smithing procedures. Containment fields are holding, but the corruption is actively degrading the forging tools."

"Intercepted?" Seth echoed, turning sharply. One of the nearby hammering automata, a heavy wheeled mecha bot equipped with dual upper limbs and precision hammer arrays rolled forward obediently. Its optical sensors swept over the stalled equipment before linking directly to Seth's metallic blindfold.

A flood of visualized data streamed straight into his neural interface. The feed sharpened into crystal clarity: the undersides of the industrial hammers were ruined. What had once been sleek, enchanted striking surfaces were now corroded into grotesque, melted shapes resembling dozens of twisted pitchforks fused together. Jagged, blackened tines dripped with residual demonic residue, still smoking faintly.

"Ohh, come on," Seth groaned, dragging his left hand down his face in exasperation. "Not the forging hammers."

The frustration was real, but beneath it simmered raw determination. These tools had been built to withstand plasma forging and high-mana compression. For the Vaelrix material to degrade them this thoroughly spoke volumes about the demon shell's lingering will.

This accursed demon piece is giving me headaches, damaging my equipment. It's like it doesn't want to be forged...

He gripped the pole of one of the ruined industrial hammers, feeling the lingering heat and chaotic resonance vibrating up his arm. His jaw tightened.

If you think this is going to stop me from making something meaningful out of you, then you've yet to see anything yet. I'll keep making more hammers till I put you in your place.

Seth released the damaged tool and strode toward the left corner of the chamber where heavier manual implements were stored. He selected a massive sledgehammer, its head forged from enchanted osmium-titanium alloy and reinforced with density runes. The weapon felt satisfyingly heavy as he rested it across his broad shoulder. With his free hand, he reached out and firmly grasped the breastplate, pulling it free from its anti-gravity clamp with a grunt of effort. The piece fought him, its dark energy flaring in protest, but he held firm.

He began walking toward the front center of the chamber where the manual furnace and anvil waited, an old-school setup he kept for when raw intuition and brute force were required over automation. The heat intensified as he moved closer to the primary forge, waves rolling off the glowing crucible like invisible pressure.

Then he stopped mid-stride.

Wait… won't it bring out the same result if I continue using a standard hammer?

The realization hit hard. Continuing with conventional tools would only lead to more ruined equipment and wasted time. The Vaelrix chassis demanded something superior, something capable of overpowering its chaotic resistance with overwhelming force and precision.

He let the sledgehammer slide off his shoulder. It fell with a thunderous clang against the reinforced floor plating, the impact echoing through the chamber. Almost immediately, a smaller river bot trundled forward on tracked wheels, efficiently retrieving the fallen hammer and clearing the path.

Seth's mind raced, cycling through his inventory of artifacts and prototypes. Then it clicked.

"I have just the thing under my possession…"

"Aid!" he commanded, voice ringing with renewed excitement. "Transport the Yegnir to the forge chamber!"

"Understood!" Aid responded promptly. In the background, mechanical systems hummed to life as the AI rerouted internal transport rails.

Let's see what the Yegnir is capable of.

While waiting, Seth carried the breastplate and the other nearby armor pieces closer to the massive manual furnace. He arranged them carefully on the heat-resistant staging platform, studying their corrupted surfaces. The dark energy still pulsed, but he could sense the material's potential beneath the resistance, like a wild beast that needed to be tamed through superior dominance.

"Aid," he continued, stripping off his upper garment with a smooth motion and tossing the shirt aside. His muscular torso, marked by old scars and integrated neural ports, gleamed under the fiery light. "Increase the furnace heat to 10,000°C. While ramping it up, amplify the heat resistance across the entire chamber and clear out the other machine infrastructures to prevent collateral damage!"

The AI's reply carried a faint note of caution. "Heating up to 10,000°C will consume 50% of the dungeon core power capacity."

"Proceed with the command," Seth said without hesitation, his blindfold reflecting the growing orange glow. "I'll do whatever it takes. Use several heat rune stones as well. Also, heat-proof the necessary equipment prepared for the forge and the river bot."

"Understood!" Aid acknowledged. Systems engaged at once.

Throughout the chamber, protective measures activated in sequence. The forging structures shimmered as reinforced heat-resistance fields enveloped them, rune-etched barriers glowing bright blue. The river bot's chassis glazed over with a fresh layer of shimmering thermal coating, its joints and actuators reinforced against the coming inferno. Overhead vents roared louder, redirecting airflow to maintain structural integrity.

The primary furnace responded with a deep, building roar. Mana-infused flames surged within its crucible, climbing rapidly in intensity. The temperature gauge on the holographic display spiked dramatically—8,000°C… 9,000°C… approaching the target. Waves of blistering heat rolled outward, forcing even the automated systems to pull back. The forge chamber doors, which had briefly opened during the transport sequence, released a violent rush of superheated air into the adjacent corridor before sealing shut again with a heavy clang.

A hover bot descended from an overhead rail, carrying the Yegnir on a stabilized anti-gravity pallet. The artifact was imposing, a power artifact which Seth intend to use as aforging hammer of immense proportions, pulsed along its haft, promising raw, unyielding power.

The river bot moved swiftly to intercept, accepting the Yegnir from the hover platform with careful mechanical arms. It then trundled toward Seth, the immense weight of the hammer barely registering on its reinforced frame. The forge doors remained sealed, trapping the escalating heat inside as the bot approached its master, extending the Yegnir forward.

The core shimmering forest spirit energy as Seth took a hold of it.

Seth took a firm two-handed grip on the Yegnir. The moment his fingers closed around the haft, the hammer's shimmering forest-green energy surged, clashing violently against the thick, oily waves of chaotic power rolling off the breastplate. The violet-black corruption recoiled for a heartbeat then pushed back harder, like a living storm testing its cage.

A sharp, predatory grin cut across Seth's face.

"Fight me all you want, there's no way to run."

He raised the artifact high. The furnace roared at full intensity behind him, the air warping and rippling from 10,000°C of pure fury. With a roar that shook the reinforced walls, Seth brought the Yegnir down.

BOOM.

The impact was cataclysmic.

Emerald and violet-black energies detonated outward in a violent spiral. The breastplate screamed not with a voice, but with a raw, dissonant howl of pure chaotic force. The metal finally yielded under the overwhelming strike; infernal sigils cracked and began realigning, molten edges flowing and reshaping under the Yegnir's dominance.

For one triumphant moment, Seth felt the chaotic energy inside the chassis buckling.

Then it exploded.

Unbound torrents of raw demonic power erupted from the breastplate in thrashing black tendrils. They weren't sentient just pure, mindless hunger and corruption seeking to consume or corrupt anything they touched. Several tendrils lashed toward Seth's arms, searing through the heat-resistant gloves and biting into his skin. Others whipped across the chamber, slamming into the reinforced rune barriers and causing them to flicker dangerously.

The river bot let out a mechanical shriek as one tendril grazed its chassis, instantly corroding part of the fresh thermal coating.

Seth snarled, muscles bulging as he held the Yegnir down, pinning the breastplate to the anvil. Grim energy fluctuate from a strip burns on his forearms, but his blindfold glowed with fierce resolve.

"Is that all?" he growled through clenched teeth. "You're just leftover scraps. I'll hammer every last drop of chaos into something useful."

The chaotic energy surged again, stronger this time, feeding off the extreme heat. Warning runes across the chamber flared red as the dungeon core power drain spiked. The breastplate was changing its form becoming more responsive, yet the corruption was also spreading, threatening to destabilize the entire forging array.

Aid's voice cut through the roar, edged with urgency:

"Warning: Chaotic resonance at critical levels. Containment fields at 47% and dropping. Recommend immediate stabilization protocol."

Seth laughed low, strained, and exhilarated as another black tendril wrapped around his wrist like a burning chain.
