**CHAPTER 6 — THE ARCHITECTURE OF POWER**
---
He sat cross-legged on the floor.
Not the bed — the floor felt right. More honest somehow. He pressed his palms flat against the worn boards and looked at the thin line of morning light coming through the cracked shutter.
"System," he said. "Can you hear me?"
[We hear you.]
He caught the plural immediately. "We."
[Two systems. One host. We are distinct but share a function.]
"Are you sentient?"
A pause. Shorter than he expected.
[We are aware. Whether that constitutes sentience by your definition is a question we find imprecise.]
'Careful,' he thought. 'Not a deflection. It's actually thinking about the question.'
"Can you think independently of me?"
[Within parameters.]
"What parameters?"
[That is not something we are able to disclose at this time.]
"Not able," he said. "Or not permitted?"
The pause this time was longer.
[Both.]
He sat back.
Built with locked doors. Whoever had assembled these systems had decided exactly how much he was allowed to know and engineered the limit directly into the systems themselves. Same hand that had sealed his name. Same hand that had hidden his innate ability behind symbols he couldn't read.
'They gave me tools,' he thought, 'and then decided how much I could know about those tools.'
He filed it and moved on.
"Tell me what you can," he said. "Soul Continuum first."
A pause. Then:
---
[Soul Continuum System]
[Function: Past-Life Channeling]
[Host Profile: Infinite accumulated lives across the span of existence. Each prior life constitutes a distinct self — complete, intact, and accessible.]
[PARTIAL CHANNELING]
[Draw: Minor fraction of a prior life.]
[Effect: Skills, instincts, combat memory, knowledge fragments surface in the host.]
[Self-Stability: Host identity remains intact.]
[Cost: Low. Manageable with basic soul fortitude.]
[DEEP CHANNELING]
[Draw: Significant portion of a prior life.]
[Effect: Genuine power transfer. Host will feel the prior self — its personality, memories, physical instincts. Host identity recedes but does not disappear.]
[Self-Stability: Moderate risk. Prior self will assert. Host must maintain center.]
[Cost: High. Soul fatigue. Temporary identity blurring.]
[FULL CHANNELING]
[Draw: Complete temporary possession by a prior life.]
[Effect: Host ceases to be current self for the duration. Prior life's full power, mind, and nature manifest entirely.]
[Self-Stability: Critical risk. Current self held in abeyance. Return is not guaranteed.]
[Cost: Everything the host currently is, staked against recovery.]
[WARNING: Prior lives are not memories. They are complete selves. Some are ancient. Some are powerful beyond the current vessel's comprehension. They will resist displacement. The more frequently Full Channeling is used, the weaker the current self's grip on center becomes. A self displaced enough times cannot find its way back.]
[We advise caution.]
---
He read it three times.
He was carrying an infinite number of selves in a single body and the body didn't even have a cultivation layer yet.
'Infinite lives,' he thought. 'All of them still in me. All of them pressing against the inside of whatever I am.'
The warning sat heavier than the function description. Losing himself — not to corruption, not to an enemy — but to a prior version of himself that was older and stranger and more powerful. Drowning in his own depth.
He'd spent eighteen years building the self he currently was.
He had no intention of losing it to anyone. Including himself.
"Boundless Sovereignty," he said.
---
[Bundless Sovereignty System]
[Function: Limitless Ascension and Universal Multiplication]
[ASCENSION]
[Effect: All cultivation ceilings, layer thresholds, trial restrictions, and advancement barriers yield to the host over time. There is no final layer. There is no cap. There is no point at which the system stops functioning.]
[Condition: None. This function requires no special circumstances. It simply operates.]
[PERMANENT MULTIPLIER: 10x]
[Effect: Every effect generated by or applied to the host is multiplied by a factor of ten. This is permanent. This is unconditional. This is always active.]
[MULTIPLIER APPLIES TO:]
[— Damage dealt: x10]
[— Energy output: x10]
[— Cultivation speed: x10]
[— Ability potency: x10]
[— Recovery rate: x10]
[— Resistance generation: x10]
[MULTIPLIER ALSO APPLIES TO:]
[— Damage received: x10]
[— Negative status effect duration: x10]
[— Curse penetration depth: x10]
[— Energy backlash severity: x10]
[— Corruption effect depth: x10]
[— Pain: x10]
[IMPORTANT: The multiplier does not distinguish between beneficial and detrimental effects. It does not activate selectively. It cannot be toggled. It has been this way since the system's creation and will remain this way.]
[Manage accordingly.]
---
He sat with that for a long moment.
'Ten times,' he thought. 'Everything. Both directions. Always.'
He thought about the blank-faced figure last night. The casual extraction. If he'd had any cultivation at all when that hit — ten times the backlash severity. It would have been faster, not slower.
But ten times cultivation speed. Ten times output. Even starting from Ember-grade — ten times Ember was a problem for people considerably above it.
'The system makes me dangerous,' he thought. 'It also makes every single mistake cost ten times what it should. There is no margin. Not ever.'
He thought about that, and thought about himself, and felt something cold and quiet settle in his chest.
He'd been living without margin since he was nine years old.
The system had handed him a structural disadvantage that was already the shape of his entire life.
'Fine,' he thought. 'I know how to live here.'
"What's locked?" he asked.
[The majority of both systems' functions.]
"How much is the majority."
[Significant.]
"That's not a number."
[No,] the system agreed. [It isn't.]
He exhaled quietly. "The unlock conditions."
[We don't have that information. ####'s will sealed them. We can see the locks. We cannot see what opens them.]
'The People From Beyond,' he thought. 'You gave me two of the highest systems in existence and then blindfolded me inside them. I don't know yet if that's protection or a test or something else entirely.'
'I'll find the edges myself.'
"Anything you can tell me freely?" he asked. "Without hitting a wall."
[Yes. The joint function carries no restrictions.]
"Go ahead."
---
[JOINT FUNCTION — STORE AND INFO]
[STORE]
[Function: Acquisition of any ability, physique, bloodline, scripture, weapon, item, or technique within and beyond the scope of Aetherion.]
[Currency: Sovereignty Points — generated by the Boundless Sovereignty System through cultivation progress, combat performance, and undisclosed additional conditions.]
[Current Balance: 0 Sovereignty Points]
[Note: Pricing reflects rarity, rank, and availability. High-rank acquisitions carry commensurately high cost. Nothing in the Store is free. Nothing in the Store is cheap.]
[INFO]
[Function: Retrieval of any knowledge — cultivation secrets, sealed histories, individual profiles, faction intelligence, location data, ability mechanics, and information that has been destroyed, buried, or never recorded within standard Aetherion frameworks.]
[Currency: Soul Echoes — generated by the Soul Continuum System through successful channeling, soul cultivation, and recovery of prior-life memories.]
[Current Balance: 0 Soul Echoes]
[Note: Information of greater sensitivity carries greater cost. Some information carries cost the host may not currently be able to pay.]
---
"So both are empty," he said.
[Currently, yes.]
"And I generate points by doing things I can't yet do."
[You will need to begin somewhere,] the system said, with a neutrality that was clearly doing a lot of work.
He almost smiled. Almost.
---
He was quiet for a moment.
Outside, a cart went over a bad stone in the road and someone cursed at their horse. Ordinary morning. Ordinary world with no idea what was sitting cross-legged on the floor of a rented room in the lower middle district.
"Are you on my side?" he asked.
The pause was the longest one yet.
[We are bound to your function. Your growth is our purpose. We have no agenda that exists separately from that.]
"That's not what I asked."
[We know.]
Another pause.
[We are not parasites. We do not consume you. We do not answer to interests that oppose yours. We were built to serve the host. That is what we are.]
He sat with it.
Reasonable. Honest-feeling — and he was good at sensing the difference. But these systems had been built by people who had decided he didn't need to know his own name. Who had locked the majority of what he'd been given. Who had blind spots engineered deliberately into everything they'd sent him.
Whatever the systems believed about their own intentions — the people who had built them had intentions of their own.
He would use every single thing he'd been given.
He would use it better than anyone had ever used anything.
But he would never — not once, not for a moment — stop looking at it sideways.
"One more thing," he said. "My abilities. I want the full descriptions."
[Of course.]
[Shall we begin?]
"Yes," Varek said. "Begin."
