Chapter 21 - Territorial already

This wasn't just another corporate competitor.

Whatever history sat between Kael and Adrian…

It wasn't finished.

The realization stayed with Iren longer than he expected.

Across the reception floor, Adrian Voss had already returned to his conversation, posture relaxed, expression calm. Anyone watching him now would assume nothing unusual had happened moments earlier.

But Iren had felt it.

The deliberate attention.

The quiet calculation.

Beside him, Kael remained still for a second longer before finally shifting his weight again.

Then his phone vibrated.

Once.

The sound was quiet, but Iren noticed the change immediately.

Kael reached into his pocket, glancing briefly at the screen.

For the first time that evening

His expression tightened.

It wasn't dramatic.

Most people wouldn't have noticed anything.

But Iren had spent enough time around him now to recognize the difference between Kael's usual composure and the faint irritation that flickered across his features.

"…Problem?" Iren asked quietly.

Kael's gaze lifted from the phone.

"No," he said.

Then after a beat

"Something that requires attention."

He slipped the phone back into his pocket, already scanning the room once more before returning his focus to Iren.

"I need to step away for a few minutes."

Iren blinked.

That was new.

Usually Kael adjusted situations so he never had to leave unexpectedly.

"How many minutes?" Iren asked.

"Ten."

The answer came quickly.

Measured.

Kael's gaze flicked once toward the far side of the room where Adrian still stood among the crowd before returning to him.

"Remain here," he added.

Iren raised an eyebrow slightly. "I thought I was already doing that."

A faint pause.

Then Kael said quietly, "Stay aware."

Which was not the same instruction.

Before Iren could respond, Kael stepped away, already moving through the crowd with the same smooth efficiency he brought to everything else.

Within seconds, he disappeared into the corridor near the event hall entrance.

And just like that

Iren was alone.

For a moment, nothing happened.

The reception continued around him, guests drifting between conversations and quiet laughter.

Iren picked up the glass still in his hand, taking a slow sip more out of habit than interest.

Ten minutes.

He could handle ten minutes.

He had just started considering whether to move closer to the balcony when a familiar voice spoke beside him.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

Iren didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Adrian Voss had approached without drawing attention to himself, stopping beside him with the same relaxed ease he seemed to carry everywhere.

"You waited until he left," Iren said flatly.

Adrian didn't even attempt to deny it.

"That obvious?"

"Yes."

Adrian smiled faintly at that.

"Good," he said lightly. "Then I won't pretend otherwise."

Iren turned slightly, studying him more directly now.

Up close, Adrian still looked entirely composed. No tension, no impatience.

Just quiet curiosity.

"You're not very subtle," Iren said.

"Subtlety is overrated when someone already notices you," Adrian replied.

That answer made Iren pause.

Adrian rested his elbow casually against the edge of a nearby table, posture easy.

"You handle these rooms well," he continued.

Iren snorted softly. "I'm standing in one spot."

"Most people still manage to make that look uncomfortable."

"That sounds like a problem for them."

Adrian's eyes warmed slightly at the response.

"I like direct people," he said.

Iren didn't return the smile.

Something about the conversation felt… tilted.

Not wrong.

Just deliberate.

Adrian took a slow sip from his drink before continuing.

"So," he said casually, "how long have you known Kael?"

There it was.

Iren had been expecting it.

He studied Adrian for a moment before answering.

"Why?"

"Curiosity."

"That's vague."

Adrian shrugged lightly. "Professional curiosity."

Iren almost laughed at that.

"You don't strike me as someone who wastes time on casual questions."

Adrian's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Insightful."

The silence that followed stretched for a moment.

Then Adrian continued, tone still conversational.

"He's always been… difficult to read," he said.

"That's intentional," Iren replied.

"I assumed so."

Adrian tilted his head slightly, studying him.

"And you don't find that exhausting?"

"Not particularly."

"Interesting."

Adrian's eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

"You seem comfortable around him."

"I'm standing next to him," Iren said. "Not analyzing him."

"Yet."

The word lingered.

And suddenly the pattern clicked into place.

Iren's eyes cooled slightly.

"Oh," he said quietly.

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"You're not curious about me."

Adrian didn't respond.

Which was answer enough.

"You're trying to figure out Kael," Iren continued calmly. "And you think I might be useful."

The faint smile on Adrian's face didn't disappear.

If anything...

It deepened.

"That's a harsh interpretation."

"It's an accurate one."

Adrian studied him openly now.

"And if it were?"

Iren set his glass down.

"If you're trying to find a weakness," he said evenly, "you're being very obvious about it."

For the first time

Adrian looked genuinely surprised.

Just for a second.

Then he laughed softly.

Not mocking.

Genuinely amused.

"That's not the reaction I expected," he admitted.

Iren shrugged.

"Then your expectations were wrong."

He didn't wait for another response.

Instead, he stepped away, moving calmly toward the opposite side of the reception floor.

Not rushing.

Not making a scene.

Just ending the conversation.

Behind him, Adrian watched.

The amusement on his face hadn't faded.

If anything

It had grown.

Because that reaction hadn't given him what he expected.

It had given him something more interesting.

Iren reached the far side of the room just as Kael returned.

He noticed immediately.

Of course he did.

Kael's eyes found him within seconds, scanning him quickly before approaching.

"You moved," Kael said.

"Only slightly."

Kael's gaze shifted past him.

Across the room.

Where Adrian Voss still stood.

Watching.

With the same faint smile.

Kael's expression hardened by a fraction.

"What happened?" he asked.

"Nothing important," Iren said.

Kael didn't believe that.

It showed in the way his shoulders straightened slightly.

Without a word, he stepped closer.

Close enough that their arms nearly brushed.

And as another guest approached to greet him, Kael's hand rested briefly against the back of Iren's chair beside them.

Casual.

Unremarkable.

But unmistakably intentional.

Across the room

Adrian noticed.

His gaze lingered there for a moment longer than necessary.

On the placement of Kael's hand.

On the quiet way Iren didn't seem to react to it.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The corner of Adrian's mouth curved faintly.

Not mocking.

More like someone who had just confirmed a theory.

"Territorial already," he murmured under his breath.

The words were barely audible, lost beneath the soft hum of music and conversation.

He lifted his glass slowly, watching the two of them across the room.

Kael's posture remained composed, his attention divided between the conversation happening in front of him and the subtle awareness of Iren beside him.

But the proximity didn't change.

Adrian let out a quiet breath of amusement.

A low laugh escaped him before he could stop it.

Not loud.

Just a soft exhale of disbelief.

"Well," he muttered to himself.

"That explains a few things."

Across the room, Kael's gaze lifted again.

Direct.

Sharp.

Like he had sensed the attention.

For a moment their eyes met.

Neither of them looked away.

And Adrian's smile widened slightly.

Yes.

This was going to be interesting.
