"I'm going to report you to the police. The second I get out—"
"Didn't you used to run Cross for the Pig?" she interrupted. "The city is in a special crackdown period. What if you get caught with my testimony and the evidence I can provide? You'll rot in a cell for ten years. I'll make sure of it."
"Alex is already in danger. I'm the only thing keeping him breathing."
My heart stopped.
Even when I glared at her with every ounce of hatred I possessed, Elara didn't bat an eye. I eventually gave up, lying on the bed. I was tired of the cycle. No matter how I tried to attack her with words, the amount of abuse I directed at her didn't even seem to tickle her.
I had tried physical escape once, trying to bolt when she opened the door for dinner, but after experiencing her speed and strength firsthand, especially when she pinned me to the floor in seconds without breaking a sweat, I gave up on the idea of a fight.
"Are you always this despicable?" I whispered to the ceiling.
