I hadn't realized it at all. Whenever we met up back then, I made sure it was at a convenience store far away from the bar. Even when Elara came to the bar, she talked to the manager or the other staff more than she talked to me. I had been so careful. There was one time when she tried to hold my hand under the table, despite everyone sitting around the table. I refused to let her hold it or touch me where anyone could see. I even turned down her offers to pick me up after work, being very firm about it, because I was terrified someone would see us together.
"Yeah," Christina said, blowing out a cloud of smoke. "She only looked at you. From the moment she walked into the room, she never took her eyes off you."
Was that really so? I didn't know.
