Chapter 10 - Author’s Notes – Changes From Canon

Before we dive into the next part of the story, I wanted to take a moment to talk directly with everyone reading.

Some of you may have already noticed that certain characters and mechanics in this fanfiction differ from how they appear in the original Fairy Tail canon. That choice is completely intentional. I love Hiro Mashima's world and characters, but while writing this story, I didn't want to feel strictly limited by canon events or fight structures.

This story is my personal interpretation of that universe.

In the original series—especially in later arcs—many fights become direct clashes of raw force: flashy move versus flashy move. While that works well for canon, I wanted combat in this story to feel more analytical. Instead of characters simply overpowering one another, the focus here is on observation, analysis, and mid-fight adaptation:

* Gajeel: He approaches combat more tactically here. During his fight with Juvia, he actively tries to dissect how her Water Body works and figure out its limit.

* Juvia: She is portrayed as exceptionally naturally gifted—at this stage, her raw talent even rivals or surpasses Gajeel's. Their fight isn't about who has the higher "power level," but how their distinct skill sets interact.

In canon, magic is described as being tied to life force, yet only 10% of the population can use it. To make that feel consistent, my interpretation is that everyone possesses magical energy, but only 10% actually train to refine and harness it into spellcraft.

Think of it like physical fitness: almost everyone has legs, but not everyone is an athlete. It takes dedicated training and discipline to become a practicing Mage. This grounded approach led to a few deliberate adjustments to character abilities:

* Gajeel's External Metal Control: Canon Gajeel transforms his limbs into iron and eats metal to recover magic, but he rarely manipulates external metal. Expanding his abilities to control surrounding metal balances him against other Dragon Slayers. Wendy has flight, healing, buffs, and infinite air intake; Natsu has extreme mobility, emotional flame scaling, and wild versatility. Giving Gajeel environmental metal control keeps his style dynamic while preserving his core identity.

* Juvia's Environmental Moisture Gathering: Rather than generating liquid out of nowhere, Juvia extracts ambient moisture from her surroundings and condenses it into high-pressure water. Similar to how Bakugo in My Hero Academia ignites specialized sweat rather than creating explosions from nothing, this detail gives her magic a distinct, grounded feel.

To help everyone place where this story sits within the broader Fairy Tail lore, here is the exact starting anchor:

* July 7, X777: Metalicana disappears, leaving Gajeel on his own.

* July 1, X778: Albion officially joins Phantom Lord.

The story begins nearly a full year after the dragons vanished. Knowing this gap should give better context to Gajeel's mindset, the characters' current power levels, and the state of Phantom Lord as we move forward.

Thank you to everyone who has been reading, commenting, and supporting the story so far! I really appreciate all of you, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on these mechanical changes and strategic fights in the comments below.
