Chapter 92 - CHAPTER NINTY TWO: A QUIET APPRECIATION

The hospital room was quiet.

Only the slow rhythm of a heart monitor filled the air.

On the bed lay Ha-Joon Kim.

He wore the loose white hospital gown with thin blue stripes.

The stiff collar rested against his neck. His face was pale, almost colorless from the smoke and exhaustion.

Yet somehow, even unconscious, he still looked composed.

His lips were faintly pink against the pale skin.

His head had tilted slightly to the side.

Beside the bed sat Ji-Ah.

At some point while waiting, sleep had claimed her too.

Her arms rested on the mattress.

Her head lay against the edge of the bed, turned toward him.

Not too close.

But close enough that their breaths warmed the same space.

Slowly…

Ha-Joon's eyelids moved.

Then opened.

The first thing he saw was her face.

Ji-Ah.

For a moment he didn't move.

His gaze quietly traced her features.

The curve of her long eyelashes.

The gentle shape of her nose.

Her slightly chubby cheeks pressed faintly against the mattress.

Her small pink lips parted softly in sleep.

A strand of hair had fallen across her face.

Morning light slipped through the curtains, resting on her like soft gold.

Ha-Joon blinked once.

His expression stayed unreadable.

But his eyes didn't move away.

Slowly, carefully, he lifted his hand.

His fingers brushed the strand of hair away from her face.

The movement was light.

Careful.

Ji-Ah stirred instantly.

Her eyebrows scrunched.

Then suddenly her eyes opened.

She jerked upright.

"Sir!"

Her voice came out half panicked.

"You're awake!"

Ha-Joon gave a small nod.

Then slowly pushed himself up until he was sitting against the hospital pillows, his hands resting quietly on his lap.

Ji-Ah leaned forward.

"Why did you faint?"

Ha-Joon's gaze lowered slightly.

"…Fire."

The word left his mouth quietly.

Then he added quickly,

"It's nothing."

Ji-Ah studied him for a moment.

Then smiled softly.

"Well… I'm glad you're okay."

Right then—

The hospital room door swung open.

Madam entered first.

Behind her came Yoo-Na, followed by Arisoo and Min-Hyuk.

All of them looked worried.

"Ha-Joon!"

Arisoo hurried closer.

Min-Hyuk exhaled in relief.

"You scared us."

But Yoo-Na's eyes immediately locked onto Ji-Ah.

She marched forward and pushed Ji-Ah slightly aside to get closer to the bed.

"This is all your fault!"

Ji-Ah blinked.

Yoo-Na continued sharply,

"If you had handled the restaurant properly—"

"Stop."

Ha-Joon's voice cut through the room.

Everyone froze.

He looked at Yoo-Na calmly.

"Do not blame her."

Yoo-Na pressed her lips together but said nothing more.

Madam stepped forward.

"How are you feeling?"

Ha-Joon answered simply.

"I'm fine."

"It was only a panic attack."

He looked away slightly.

"I saw the fire."

Min-Hyuk frowned.

"But… you run a restaurant."

Ji-Ah blinked too.

"Yes."

She leaned slightly toward him.

"But you cook."

Ha-Joon shook his head faintly.

"I rarely cook."

Then added calmly,

"And I'm not afraid of stove flames."

Ji-Ah coughed suddenly.

"Cough—"

Then coughed again.

"Cough—!"

Ha-Joon straightened immediately.

His eyes sharpened.

"What's wrong?"

Ji-Ah waved her hand quickly.

"It's nothing."

Just smoke irritation.

But before he could say anything else, Yoo-Na stepped forward and pressed a hand against his shoulder.

"You shouldn't get up."

"You need to rest."

Ha-Joon glanced past her.

Ji-Ah had already stepped back.

Then quietly walked toward the door.

He watched her leave.

Silently.

The door closed behind her.

The hospital door clicked softly behind Ji-Ah as she stepped into the hallway.

The bright hospital lights felt colder than the room she had just left.

She exhaled quietly and rubbed the back of her neck.

Before she could take two steps, hurried footsteps approached.

"Ji-Ah!"

She turned.

Seo-Yeon was walking toward her quickly, worry written across her face.

"Is everything okay?" Seo-Yeon asked immediately. "Is everyone safe?"

Ji-Ah nodded.

"Yeah."

Her voice softened a little.

"Everyone's okay."

Seo-Yeon sighed in relief.

"Thank goodness…"

At that moment the hospital room door opened again.

Madam stepped out first.

Behind her came Yoo-Na, then Arisoo, and Min-Hyuk.

They all stopped when they saw Ji-Ah standing there.

For a moment the hallway was quiet.

Then Madam walked closer.

Her posture was as composed as always, but her voice carried sincerity.

"Ji-Ah."

Ji-Ah straightened slightly.

Madam continued,

"Thank you for saving my son."

Ji-Ah blinked once, clearly not used to hearing gratitude from her.

"It's okay."

Her tone was casual.

"No big deal."

Arisoo stepped forward next, offering a warm smile.

"Still… thank you."

Ji-Ah nodded awkwardly.

"Really. It's fine."

While the adults spoke, something else was happening quietly a few steps away.

Min-Hyuk had turned slightly.

And across from him stood Seo-Yeon.

The two of them had stopped talking entirely.

They were just… looking at each other.

Ji-Ah noticed instantly.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Then she leaned toward Seo-Yeon and muttered under her breath,

"…Right."

She clapped her hands lightly.

"Well."

Her voice returned to normal.

"We should get going."

Seo-Yeon blinked.

"Oh—okay."

Ji-Ah gave a small polite nod to Madam and Arisoo.

Then gently grabbed her sister's arm.

"Come on."

Seo-Yeon glanced once more toward Min-Hyuk before letting herself be pulled away.

The two sisters walked down the hallway.

Behind them, Min-Hyuk watched them leave.

Arisoo noticed and smirked slightly.

Yoo-Na noticed too.

But her expression wasn't amused.

Not even a little.

Inside the hospital room, the air felt heavier after everyone had stepped out.

Ha-Joon was still resting on the bed, the steady beep of the monitor tapping quietly at the silence like a slow metronome.

Min-Hyuk slipped back into the room first, closing the door gently behind him.

In the hallway, Yoo-Na folded her arms and turned toward Madam.

Her expression was tight.

Sharp.

"Why did you thank her?" Yoo-Na asked.

Madam looked at her calmly.

"For saving my son."

Her tone carried no hesitation.

"Nothing is more important to me than my son."

She paused briefly.

"So yes. I thanked her."

The meaning hung in the air like a quiet bell still vibrating.

"I hope that explains everything."

Yoo-Na's jaw tightened.

Before she could respond, a soft voice rose from behind them.

Arisoo stepped forward, her arms loosely crossed.

Her smile was polite.

Too polite.

"You know," she said thoughtfully, tilting her head, "if it were you inside that burning kitchen…"

She cleared her throat lightly.

"I imagine you'd just stand there flapping around and screaming."

Her eyes flicked toward Yoo-Na.

"Like a chicken that discovered gravity."

Min-Hyuk coughed quietly to hide a laugh.

Yoo-Na's eyes flashed.

Arisoo ignored it completely.

She checked the time on her phone.

"Anyway," she continued casually, "I'll be heading out."

Madam glanced at her.

"Where are you going?"

Arisoo slipped her phone into her pocket.

"Me and Nikki are going to Ji-Ah's place."

Her voice softened a little.

"He's been crying all morning saying he misses her."

Madam nodded once.

"Alright."

Arisoo gave a small wave and walked down the hallway, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.

Once she disappeared around the corner, the quiet returned.

Yoo-Na clicked her tongue in irritation.

"This Ji-Ah…" she muttered.

Her lips curled slightly.

"She's so much like that one."

Madam slowly turned her head toward her.

Her eyes were calm.

But cold.

"Be careful with your words," she said quietly.

A pause.

Then her voice lowered further.

"That one… was gone long ago."

Her gaze sharpened.

"Gone in the fire you started."

The hallway seemed to freeze.

Min-Hyuk looked down immediately, pretending not to hear.

Madam's voice remained smooth.

Controlled.

"But some things," she added softly, "are best left buried."

Yoo-Na's lips slowly stretched into a thin smile.

"Oh?"

Her eyes glittered.

"Well then…"

She leaned closer, voice barely above a whisper.

"Maybe I'll be the reason this one disappears too."

The threat floated in the air like smoke that never quite clears
