Chapter 144 - CHAPTER 144: SING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.

The first guests arrived in waves.

Luxury cars rolled through the gates like polished declarations.

Diamonds entered before their owners did.

Perfume, silk, laughter, old money, new money, people pretending not to stare.

The garden glowed brighter as evening deepened.

Music from the quartet drifted across the lawn.

Servers moved through the crowd with trays of champagne.

Ji-Ah stood near Arisoo and Halmoni, watching the parade.

"…Do these people eat normally at home?"

Arisoo sipped sparkling water.

"No. They survive on opinions."

Halmoni clicked her tongue.

"And pills."

Ji-Ah nearly laughed into her drink.

Madam moved through the party like the architect of civilization itself.

Every guest was greeted perfectly.

Every smile measured.

Every introduction precise.

She reached Ji-Ah without warning.

"You."

Ji-Ah looked around.

"…Who else could you mean?"

Madam's expression did not blink.

"The pianist canceled."

Ji-Ah frowned.

"…That sounds like growth."

"You will sing."

Ji-Ah stared.

"I will what?"

"You heard me."

"I also rejected it internally."

Madam lowered her voice.

"Do not embarrass this family tonight."

Ji-Ah smiled sweetly.

"You invited the wrong people for that."

Halmoni, overhearing, laughed into her tea.

Madam ignored both women.

"You know music. Go."

Then she walked away before resistance could become audible.

Ji-Ah turned slowly to Arisoo.

"She commands like weather."

Arisoo patted her arm.

"Just sing something beautiful."

"Out of spite?"

"Preferably."

Minutes later Ji-Ah stood near the small performance stage.

A microphone waited.

The crowd settled with polite curiosity.

Min-Ji looked annoyed already.

Good sign.

Ji-Ah took a breath.

Then sang.

Softly at first.

Clear.

Warm.

A voice with ache in it and humor hiding underneath.

The garden quieted.

Even waiters slowed.

Even gossip paused.

She sang a love song that sounded less like romance and more like surviving it.

By the second verse, heads had turned fully.

By the end, the applause was real.

Not polite.

Real.

Nisa had just arrived with Do-Hyun and clapped loudly enough to startle nearby investors.

"That's my girl!"

Ji-Ah looked up, startled.

They stood at the entrance like a magazine cover with emotional issues.

Nisa wore a sleek deep emerald gown, shoulders elegant, hair pinned with deliberate chaos.

Do-Hyun beside her in a black tailored suit, tie slightly loose already, handsome in that dangerous cheerful way.

He waved both hands.

"Encore!"

Madam visibly regretted many things.

Min-Ji smiled tightly enough to crack glass.

Ji-Ah bowed once and stepped down.

Nisa grabbed her immediately.

"Why are you prettier when causing trouble?"

"Stress."

Do-Hyun hugged Ji-Ah warmly.

"You sang like someone exposing secrets."

"I aspire to accuracy."

Later, the quartet shifted to slower music.

Apparently there would be dancing.

Because of course there would.

The central lawn cleared.

Couples drifted toward the floor.

Do-Hyun held out his hand to Nisa dramatically.

"My impossible wife."

She rolled her eyes and took it anyway.

They danced beautifully.

Not stiff society dancing.

Playful dancing.

He spun her once too far.

She smacked his shoulder.

He laughed.

She laughed too.

They moved like people who had argued in kitchens and made up in hallways.

The crowd adored them.

Halmoni muttered:

"At least one marriage here looks alive."

Then Min-Hyuk approached Seo-Yeon.

She stood elegant in a fitted midnight dress, cool as moonlight.

He bowed exaggeratedly.

"CEO-nim, may I borrow your refusal for one dance?"

"No."

He brightened.

"So that means yes."

She sighed.

Then gave him her hand.

They danced with quieter energy.

He looked at her like she was miraculous.

She looked at him like he was exhausting.

Both expressions were affectionate.

He whispered something.

She almost smiled.

Arisoo gasped dramatically.

"She smiled!"

Seo-Yeon glared across the dance floor.

Arisoo pretended innocence.

Halmoni watched Madam across the lawn for a long moment.

Then spoke without looking away.

"She is making a mistake."

Ji-Ah glanced over.

Madam stood near Min-Ji, greeting guests, satisfied and rigid.

"With the party?"

"With the girl."

Halmoni's cane tapped once against the stone.

"She sees polish and misses poison."

Arisoo went quiet.

Even Ji-Ah said nothing.

Halmoni added dryly:

"Classic rich people problem."

Then the music softened.

Conversations lowered.

A stir moved through the guests.

Ha-Joon had arrived.

He entered from the mansion steps in a black formal suit cut so sharply it could wound.

Composed.

Tall.

Cold.

Too handsome to be reasonable.

All eyes turned.

Min-Ji brightened instantly and hurried toward him, taking his arm before he fully reached the lawn.

He allowed it.

But his gaze moved elsewhere first.

Across the lights.

Across the guests.

To Ji-Ah.

Only for a second.

Maybe less.

Still enough.

She felt it like a hand against the air.

Then he looked away.

Madam stepped onto the stage.

Microphone in hand.

"Thank you all for joining us tonight."

The crowd gathered.

Glasses lifted.

Cameras readied.

"This evening celebrates the engagement of my son, Ha-Joon…"

A pause.

Min-Ji stood straighter, smiling brilliantly.

"…and Min-Ji."

Applause rose like trained birds.

Ji-Ah clapped once.

Slowly.

Nisa beside her whispered:

"Why do I feel like something bad and entertaining is coming?"

Ji-Ah kept watching the stage.

"Because you know me."

Under the lights, Ha-Joon stood beside Min-Ji.

Perfect on paper.

Unreadable in person.

And the night, dressed in flowers and lies, was only beginning.

More guests kept arriving, and then the party improved dramatically.

Because Ji-Ah's people showed up.

First came Min-Jea, dressed in a black suit that looked expensive and slightly illegal. His hair was styled, smile bright, energy loud.

Behind him trailed Soo-Min in a sleek silver dress, already judging centerpieces.

Seo-Jun arrived next, neat and sharp in navy, carrying himself like he'd rather be anywhere else but planned to enjoy gossip while trapped.

Kai-Wen came in charcoal gray, calm and handsome in that unfair effortless way.

Do-Yoon followed, cheerful, tie half crooked already, waving at everyone like he personally owned friendliness.

Hye-Rin entered in a soft rose dress, graceful and pretty enough to cause minor insecurity nearby.

And Lin—

Lin arrived last, eyes immediately scanning the buffet tables before people.

He wore a fitted black suit with no tie, collar open just enough to look accidental. Clean lines, quiet confidence, annoyingly attractive.

Ji-Ah folded her arms.

"You came for food."

Lin nodded honestly.

"I came for support."

A beat.

"And food."

"I respect the honesty."

He smiled.

"I know."

Then he stepped closer and lightly adjusted a strand of hair near her temple that the breeze had moved.

Simple gesture.

Small.

Intimate enough to be noticed.

Ji-Ah blinked.

"…What are you doing?"

"Saving symmetry."

"You're strange."

"You like efficient people."

Across the lawn, Ha-Joon's gaze had landed there at the exact wrong moment.

His jaw tightened once.

Then he looked away toward absolutely nothing.

Nisa saw it immediately.

"Oho."

Do-Hyun followed her line of sight.

"Ah."

Arisoo nearly levitated with excitement.

Halmoni took a sip of tea.

"Men are simple."

Then Ara arrived.

Late.

Dramatic.

Wearing a bold black jumpsuit with gold earrings and the confidence of someone invited nowhere but welcome everywhere.

She threw her arms around Ji-Ah.

"I missed the start. Who cried yet?"

"Not enough people."

"Good. I'm here now."

Ara looked toward the stage.

"Which one is the bride?"

Ji-Ah pointed subtly.

Ara stared at Min-Ji for a second.

"…Her aura is rude."

Ji-Ah nearly laughed into her drink.

The engagement ceremony continued under the lights.

Madam spoke of family unity, future prosperity, mutual respect, values no one nearby believed in.

Guests clapped at the right moments.

Photos were taken.

Ha-Joon and Min-Ji were asked to exchange rings symbolically before the wedding.

A velvet tray was brought.

Min-Ji extended her hand gracefully.

Ha-Joon slid the ring on.

Polite applause.

Then Min-Ji took his hand.

Before placing his ring, she looked up at him with practiced softness.

Ji-Ah watched without meaning to.

Min-Ji slid it onto his finger.

More applause.

The host, hired for charm and volume, beamed.

"What a beautiful couple!"

Ji-Ah muttered:

"Vision issues."

Soo-Min choked laughing.

Then came the part every crowd secretly waits for.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"

Someone shouted from the back.

Then more voices joined.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"

The chant spread ridiculously fast.

Soo-Min cupped her hands.

"KISS!"

Ji-Ah smacked her arm.

"Behave."

Min-Jea immediately joined louder.

"KISS THEM OR REFUND US!"

Ji-Ah hit him too.

"You're not helping."

"I'm healing the room!"

Ara was screaming now.

"COMMIT TO THE BIT!"

Madam looked moments from banning oxygen.

Min-Ji blushed delicately, exactly on cue.

She turned to Ha-Joon.

He did not move at first.

Then he glanced once across the crowd.

Found Ji-Ah.

She hadn't expected that.

For one strange second, everything else thinned.

Music.

Voices.

Lights.

Then Ji-Ah, confused by the moment and suddenly aware everyone was watching, gave the smallest nod.

As if to say: just do it.

Ha-Joon's expression changed by almost nothing.

Then he turned back.

Min-Ji lifted her face eagerly.

He leaned in.

Pressed a brief kiss to her lips.

Controlled.

Careful.

A gesture more than a moment.

He allowed it.

He did not participate in it.

The crowd erupted anyway.

Cheers.

Clapping.

Phones raised.

Min-Ji smiled like victory.

Ji-Ah looked down at her glass for reasons she didn't appreciate.

Lin, beside her, noticed.

Without speaking, he handed her a fresh dessert spoon from a passing tray.

She frowned.

"…Why."

"For emotional emergencies."

She laughed despite herself.

"…Thank you."

"You're welcome."

Ha-Joon saw that too.

Worse.

He looked away again.

As congratulations resumed, another corner of the lawn became its own entertainment.

Mr. Kang, Mrs. Kang, and Hea-In had discovered the seafood station.

And dignity had not survived.

Mrs. Kang was loudly asking if she could take lobster home "for later blessings."

Mr. Kang pocketed imported chocolates when he thought no one looked.

Hea-In stacked six pastries on one plate, then three more on top like architecture.

A waiter froze in spiritual distress.

Ji-Ah slowly smirked.

"Well, well, well."

Ara followed her gaze.

"…Who are those villagers?"

"Future in-laws, allegedly."

Min-Jea gasped.

"No."

"Yes."

Soo-Min whispered:

"This event has layers."

Halmoni, overhearing, called across the lawn:

"Take seven more pastries! Finish my embarrassment properly!"

Mr. Kang pretended not to hear.

Mrs. Kang heard and took two more.

Music resumed.

Photos continued.

Guests mingled.

Min-Ji glowed under attention.

Madam glowed under control.

But under all the polished celebration, glances kept crossing the lawn.

Some brief.

Some hidden.

Some impossible to explain.

And Ji-Ah, laughing with her friends beneath the lights, had no idea she was the one thing Ha-Joon kept looking away from because he could not stop looking at all.
