Chapter 136 - Kanon vs. Naruto | We Are Best Friends Forever!

Beneath a cascading waterfall, Kanon had already shed her Akatsuki cloak. She stood with her hair tied in twin tails, a fox mask resting on her forehead, revealing her delicate features. Her slender frame already bore the subtle curves of maturing adolescence.

Standing by the edge of the placid water, she offered a striking contrast to the roaring falls in the distance. In that moment, Kanon looked like a maiden stepped out of a painting, a sight so ethereal that Naruto, approaching from afar, found himself momentarily entranced.

He had never truly looked at Kanon this way before; he had always simply seen her as his best friend. Only now, observing her with clear eyes, did he realize just how beautiful she had become.

"You're here."

Kanon turned, her expression flat and unreadable as she locked eyes with Naruto.

"Kanon..."

Suddenly, Kanon reached up and used her fingers to forcibly pull the corners of her mouth upward.

She forced a smile, a hollow, artificial expression that left Naruto bewildered and unsettled.

But in the next heartbeat, it felt as though his soul was being torn in two. Kanon's fingers dragged the corners of her mouth downward into a mask of sorrow. Then, she hooked them upward once more, returning to that mock smile; yet this time, a single tear escaped the corner of her left eye and traced a path down her cheek.

Naruto and Kanon stood like reflections in a mirror, a study in contrasts between the internal and external, the false and the true, smiles and tears.

The gesture was a silent confession of her inner turmoil, a girl questioning whether her life was destined to be a comedy or a tragedy.

That final tear was the answer Kanon had been seeking.

"Come. I'm ready," Kanon said, dropping her hand. She faced Naruto and raised the Kusanagi Sword she kept at her waist, still keeping the blade reversed.

Naruto was shaken by her cryptic display, but he knew he had to sharpen his focus.

"I'll find my answer in this fight!" Naruto declared. He needed to know how to face Kanon from here on out, and whether they could truly remain best friends.

The battle ignited instantly.

Kanon struck first. Her Chidori streaked across the clearing like a bolt of lightning, moving at a speed that defied the eye.

Naruto, however, was prepared. His body reacted in the nick of time, Nine-Tails chakra surging through his veins and pushing his own speed to its limit.

Their silhouettes blurred as they clashed across the battlefield, every strike carrying enough force to shatter stone. Yet, this was no mere contest of raw power; it was a psychological and strategic gambit.

Kanon shifted her rhythm constantly, attempting to break Naruto's footing with a relentless assault. Every movement hid a lethal intent; every spin contained a calculated depth of wisdom.

But Naruto seemed to possess an answer for everything. His intuition and hard-won combat experience allowed him to escape disaster at every critical juncture.

Kanon wasn't giving it her all; she wasn't even using the level of strength she had displayed during her sparring sessions with Sasuke. For no other reason than this: like Naruto, she didn't truly want to fight. But this was a confrontation that had to happen.

Finally, after several exchanges, Kanon caught Naruto's hand in a vice grip. She followed through with a punch directly to his face, sending him tumbling backward.

"Naruto, is this all the strength you've gained after three years of training?"

She watched as Naruto skidded across the water, eventually steadying himself.

"Just a little more... just a little more... and the answer will..."

"Naruto, I'm going to crush you and everything Konoha stands for!" Kanon intercepted his muttering as she lunged forward, her fingers blurring through hand signs.

"Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu!"

A massive sphere of flame roared toward Naruto. Crimson chakra claws manifested around him, and with a single swipe, he swatted the conflagration aside.

Kanon followed up with a sword strike, the blade whistling through the air. It sliced clean through Naruto's headband, sending it flying. As the metal protector spun through the air, Kanon reached out and snatched it.

"Kanon..." Naruto drew a kunai from his holster, his face hardening with resolve.

Kanon raised her Kusanagi Sword, her gaze icy.

"Kanon!!!"

"Naruto!!!"

CLANG!

Steel met steel as the Kusanagi Sword clashed against the kunai.

"You're too naive, Naruto! To me, avenging the Uchiha clan and destroying Konoha are my only goals. I don't care what happens to anything else!"

Hearing her words, Naruto closed his eyes. He spoke softly, his voice steady.

"These past three years... I've trained my life away just to get to this point."

"Kanon, I don't care how much you talk about revenge or destroying the village, or how hard you try to push us away."

"The bond we share, the bond we've had since we were kids..."

"It isn't something you can just cut away that easily."

Kanon's expression remained hauntingly calm. She continued to swing her blade, asking with cold indifference:

"You really are a fool, Naruto!"

In that instant, the two began to circle one another on the water's surface. Beneath the waterfall, they traded blows in a frantic blur, sword against kunai.

But Naruto's taijutsu was no match for Kanon's. With a few deft movements, she parried his guard and sent him sprawling. For a moment, it was as if time had rewound to their childhood.

Back at Kanon's secret training ground on the cliffside, a young Naruto was sparring with a young Kanon.

With a final blow from the young Kanon, the little Naruto went stumbling back.

"Kanon, you're seriously amazing!"

"Heh, you give up yet, Naruto?"

"I gave up ages ago!"

"Next time you fight my brother, make sure you use the moves I just showed you."

"Got it!"

The young Kanon looked at the boy collapsed on the ground. she brushed her long, waist-length black hair back, tucking a stray lock behind her ear as she reached out a hand with a smile.

"Need a hand?"

"Yeah..." Just as the young Naruto reached out…

The present-day Kanon appeared behind her younger self, shoving the memory aside. She held a Rasengan in her hand, thrusting it toward the present-day Naruto, who was charging forward with a Rasengan of his own.

The two spheres collided. The terrifying explosion blasted both of them backward.

Kanon slammed into a stone wall, the impact spider-webbing the rock, while Naruto skipped several times across the water.

"Even now, you still refuse to hurt me, don't you? Kanon!" Seeing that he had only suffered a minor tumble, Naruto felt a wave of guilt wash over him.

Kanon dropped from the wall and brushed the dust off her short-sleeved shirt.

"It's time to end this, Naruto!"

She sheathed the Kusanagi Sword and gripped her right wrist with her left hand. High-pitched chirping filled the air as the Chidori sparked into existence. This time, she had decided to use her true power.

Seeing that Kanon had finally made her choice, a shadow clone appeared behind Naruto to help him form a Rasengan. His heart, however, was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

The water around Kanon began to churn, driven by a terrifying pressure that caused the surface to explode in rhythmic bursts. Naruto, too, was surrounded by a localized gale as the rotation of his Rasengan whipped the calm water into a frenzy.

"Rasengan!"

"Chidori!"

They accelerated instantly, closing the gap in less than a second. The surrounding water erupted.

BOOM!

A massive, blinding sphere of energy expanded across the water.

Fragmented memories flooded Naruto's mind; every moment, every trial, every laugh he had shared with Kanon since they were children.

Kanon... maybe you and I really are the same...

As the Rasengan and Chidori reached their breaking point, Naruto and Kanon's fingers entwined in the Seal of Reconciliation. Within that brilliant sphere of light, both understood exactly how the other felt.

No matter how far apart their paths might take them, they would always be best friends.
