By the time I got back to my room, the silence felt heavier than usual, pressing in from all sides as though the walls themselves were watching, waiting for something to unfold.
Just as I reached for my phone, the screen lit up in my hand, drawing my attention instantly.

For a brief moment, I simply stared at it, my heartbeat slowing instead of rising, because somewhere deep down, I already knew who it was.
A small, knowing smile tugged at the corner of my lips as I let it ring once more before answering, deliberately taking my time.
"Hello?" I said softly, my tone calm, controlled, and just curious enough.
There was a short pause on the other end before a low, familiar voice came through.
"I was starting to think you gave me the wrong number."
My smile deepened slightly as I turned and began walking toward the window, my fingers trailing lightly along the edge of the curtain.
