Chapter 17 - Rooftop Confrontation

Two hours later, the rooftop of Keiko High School lay wrapped in a fragile hush, the kind of silence that pressed against the eardrums like an invisible weight.

A soft breeze drifted across the concrete expanse, carrying the rich, savoury aroma of warm rice and bubbling curry from the cafeteria far below, mingling with the faint metallic tang of sun-warmed railings and distant exhaust from the city streets sprawling endlessly beneath them.

The afternoon sun hung high and unrelenting, a blazing orb that cast long, sharp shadows across the weathered rooftop tiles, turning every crack and puddle from last night's rain into glittering shards of light. The view stretched out like a living painting, towering skyscrapers piercing the hazy skyline, the faint hum of traffic rising like a distant heartbeat, and the endless blue sky above feeling almost too vast, too indifferent to the fragile lives clinging to this small island of calm above the chaos.

Paulo leaned against the rusted railing, his posture deceptively relaxed, one hand loosely cradling a half-eaten sandwich while his brown eyes stared out at the horizon with that familiar, half-lidded detachment.

The breeze tugged at his dark hair, but he barely registered it; the warmth of the sun on his skin felt distant, muted, as if filtered through a thick veil of fog that never quite lifted. Inside his chest, the old depression lingered like a living shadow, cold, heavy, a relentless tide that pulled at the edges of his thoughts even here, in this momentary escape.

It whispered of rain-slicked edges and sterile restraints, of betrayals that had carved hollow spaces where hope once lived.

He chewed slowly, mechanically, each bite tasting like ash, his shoulders carrying an invisible weight that no amount of new friends or bright declarations could fully erase.

Beside him, Alexis sprawled dramatically across the concrete, unwrapping his bento box with theatrical flair, his voice cutting through the quiet like a spark in dry tinder. "Ahhh, freedom at last! Finally, away from the screaming fanboys and the endless first-year bragging about their basketball stats. If I had to hear one more kid flexing his three-pointer average, I swear I'd hurl myself off this roof just for the silence."

His laughter rang out, sharp and infectious, but his eyes, those sharp, observant eyes, kept flicking back to Paulo, narrowing with quiet concern.

He saw it, the subtle slump in his best friend's frame, the way Paulo's gaze drifted not in boredom but in quiet surrender, the depression still clinging like smoke to his every breath.

Alexis masked his worry with another grin, but the knot in his stomach tightened; he knew the signs too well, the way the darkness never truly left, only learned to hide behind calm shrugs and steady words.

Saya sat neatly cross-legged on a folded jacket, poking at her rice with precise chopstick motions, her sly smile curling at the corners of her lips like a secret waiting to spill.

"Or maybe you're just jealous because Ava completely ignored you in class and glued herself to Paulo instead," she teased, her voice light but laced with playful venom.

Tsuki chuckled beside her, sipping from her juice box with a soft slurp, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she leaned back against the low wall. "Honestly, it was wild. Ava straight-up declaring her love in front of the entire class? That girl doesn't hold back, she's a force of nature wrapped in blonde fluff and pure chaos."

Paulo chewed another bite of his snack, his expression unchanging, voice low and steady as ever. "…She's honest. That's just Ava."

The words hung in the warm air, simple and blunt, but they carried an undercurrent of quiet resignation that made the breeze feel suddenly colder.

Alexis smirked, raising his eyebrows in exaggerated surprise, though his gaze lingered on Paulo's face a beat too long, catching the faint shadow under his eyes, the way his free hand tightened almost around the sandwich wrapper.

"Honest, huh? She's obsessed with you, man. And you… you don't even flinch. Saint or robot? I still can't decide which." The rooftop fell into a brief, charged silence, the distant city hum swelling like a warning.

But Paulo only shrugged, his brown eyes distant as he sipped from his drink, the liquid cool against his tongue yet doing nothing to thaw the ice in his veins. "…She needs me to the point of being alive. So, I'll stay and help her and support her with my life."

The blunt honesty landed like a stone in still water, freezing Saya and Tsuki mid-motion. They exchanged a wide-eyed glance, the air thickening with unspoken tension. Alexis nearly choked on his rice, coughing through a startled laugh.

"Bro, do you even hear yourself? That's basically a confession wrapped in steel." Yet beneath his teasing, Alexis's concern deepened; he watched Paulo's steady posture, the way the depression still hollowed his friend's presence, turning even this moment of quiet loyalty into something heavier, more fragile.

The sun beat down hotter, the breeze carrying a sharper edge now, as if the rooftop itself sensed the storm brewing below. Down in the cafeteria, chaos reigned in Ava's chest. She stormed through the crowded hall, tray clutched in white-knuckled hands, her ocean-blue eyes scanning desperately through the sea of students, laughing faces, clattering trays, the overwhelming stench of curry and chatter that pressed in like walls closing tighter.

No Paulo. No Alexis. No familiar anchor in the storm of her mind. Her heart slammed against her ribs like a caged animal, panic rising in suffocating waves, the BPD torrent threatening to drown her. Where is he? Why isn't he here? Did he leave me? Did he finally see how broken I am and walk away?

Her phone was in her trembling grip before she could think, thumbs flying across the screen in a frantic barrage to Saya:

"Sayaaaa where are you??"

"Is Paulo with you??"

"Don't hide from me, I know you're with him."

"Tell me NOW. If Paulo's eating without me I'll DIE. "

"Saya please answer I'm going insane."

"I can't breathe without knowing where he is!!"

Message after message flooded out, her hands shaking so violently the phone nearly slipped, tears pricking at her eyes as the world blurred into a haze of raw terror. He promised. He said he wouldn't leave. The thought clawed through her, twisting tighter with every unanswered second.

Back on the rooftop, Saya's phone erupted in a violent buzz against the concrete, the screen lighting up with a relentless flood of notifications, Ava's name blazing like a siren. Saya blinked, holding it up with raised brows.

"Uh… guys? Ava's spamming me. Like, full meltdown mode." Tsuki leaned over, eyes widening as she counted the rapid-fire texts. "Twenty-three in under a minute. Holy hell, she's going to climb the walls, or the building."

Alexis burst into laughter, clutching his stomach, but his gaze darted to Paulo again, noting the subtle tightening of his friend's jaw, the way the depression still lingered in the quiet tension of his shoulders even as concern flickered in his steady eyes.

"She's actually losing it! Paulo, you've created a beautiful, terrifying monster." Paulo's eyes shifted toward the glowing screen, his calm I unbroken, yet his hand tightened fractionally around the drink can, a faint crack in the armour Alexis alone caught.

"…She's scared," he murmured, voice soft but heavy with that underlying weight, the depression making even his empathy feel like another burden he carried without complaint. Saya hesitated, tilting her head. "So… should I tell her? Because if I don't, she might actually tear the school apart looking for you."

Tsuki grinned wickedly, the breeze whipping her hair like a banner of mischief. "I kind of want to see that. Imagine Ava storming up here like a golden hurricane, eyes blazing, ready to claim her territory."

Alexis doubled over again, laughing harder. "She'd kick the door open with fireworks exploding behind her, man. Pure chaos." Paulo set his can of soda down with a quiet sigh that carried more exhaustion than the moment warranted, the sound lost in the wind but heavy to Alexis's ears. "…Just tell her. I don't want her to cry."

The words were steady, but the depression shadowed them, turning simple kindness into something profound and weary. Saya nodded, fingers flying across the keys: "We're on the rooftop. Come up." The reply sent, the rooftop fell into expectant silence, the sun glaring brighter, the city below humming with oblivious life.

The moment Ava's phone lit up with those words, her world reignited like a starburst in the void. Rooftop. He's there. He didn't leave. He didn't abandon me. Her legs moved on pure instinct, tray abandoned in a clatter that drew stares, nearly knocking over two startled first-years as she bolted from the cafeteria.

Her golden hair whipped behind her like flames in a gale, heart thundering so violently it drowned out the hallway echoes. She tore through the corridors, shoes slamming against linoleum, breathless whispers tearing from her lips: "Paulo… Paulo, wait for me… I'm coming…"

The rooftop door slammed open with a thunderous BANG that echoed like a gunshot across the concrete, reverberating through the metal railings and sending birds scattering from nearby vents.

Everyone froze mid-bite. Alexis's chopsticks hovered, Saya's jaw dropped, Tsuki whispered a stunned "Oh my god…" And there she stood, Ava, a storm given human form. Her fluffy blonde hair lashed wildly in the sudden gust, blazer half-undone from her desperate sprint, cheeks flushed a feverish crimson, ocean-blue eyes burning with raw, unfiltered desperation.

She looked feral, magnificent, terrifying, every inch the whirlwind of love and fear that consumed her. Her gaze locked onto Paulo instantly, standing calm and steady by the railing, sipping his drink as if the world hadn't just tilted on its axis.

"Paulo!" she shouted, voice cracking with trembling intensity, bolting forward with clattering footsteps that shattered the rooftop's fragile peace. Without hesitation, she threw herself against him, arms wrapping around his torso in a crushing embrace, face burying deep into his chest as if he were the only solid thing left in her fracturing universe.

"Why… why didn't you tell me where you were?!" she gasped, breathless and desperate, her whole body shaking. "I thought, I thought you left me! You promised, Paulo, you promised…"

Paulo blinked slowly, setting his drink aside with deliberate calm before his free hand rested gently on her back, steadying her amid the chaos. "…I didn't leave you, Ava. I was just eating lunch."

The words were soft, unwavering, but Alexis caught the faint weariness beneath them, the depression still etching subtle lines around Paulo's eyes, turning even this anchoring moment into something he endured more than embraced.

Ava clung tighter, sniffling against his uniform, tears soaking through the fabric. "But… but what if you had? What if you disappeared and I couldn't find you? My chest was breaking, Paulo, I couldn't breathe, I thought I was dying without you…"

Her words poured out raw and unfiltered, body trembling violently as the rooftop fell deathly silent save for the rushing wind and her choked sobs. Saya and Tsuki exchanged worried glances, the air thickening with unease.

Alexis muttered under his breath to Saya, "Man, she's feral… but he's got that wizard calm again," though his eyes stayed fixed on Paulo, noting the quiet strain, the way the depression lingered like an uninvited shadow even as he comforted her.

Ava's tears flowed freely now, dampening his shirt. "Promise me again, Paulo. Say it, say you'll never leave me. Please, I need it, or I'll break…" Her voice fractured, raw desperation clawing at the edges of sanity.

Paulo lowered his gaze, brown eyes soft yet resolute, hand gently cupping the back of her head as he guided her closer. "I promise. I'm not going anywhere, Ava. Not now. Not ever."

Her sob melted into a half-laugh, half-cry of relief, body sagging against him as the storm inside her eased. "God, you don't understand how much I love you… it's insane, Paulo. It's you times a thousand. You're everything."

Tsuki whispered to Saya, voice soft with awe and unease, "This is like a drama… but real. And way scarier." Alexis chuckled, scratching his neck. "Well, Paulo, congrats, you're the centre of the ultimate soap opera."

But Paulo ignored them all, tilting Ava's chin up with gentle firmness, voice calm yet laced with that underlying heaviness Alexis alone sensed. "Ava. Breathe. I'm here. You don't have to chase me; I'll stay with you."

Her breath hitched, tears slowing as she stared into his eyes, then grabbed his collar, pressing her forehead to his in trembling intimacy. "If you ever lie about that… I'll never forgive you. Because you're already my husband in my heart."

The rooftop crew froze, Saya's jaw dropped, Tsuki spat her juice in shock, Alexis letting out the loudest laugh yet. "Husband?! Already? Man, you skipped ten levels of dating!" But Ava didn't hear them.

Her world had narrowed to Paulo alone, his warmth, his promise, his quiet strength that steadied her chaos. And Paulo… he didn't flinch, didn't correct her. He simply rested his forehead against hers, eyes closing as the breeze swirled around them. "…If that's what you want, Ava."

Her heart shattered and reformed in the same instant, tears turning to the brightest, purest smile as she clutched him tighter. "Yes! Yes, that's what I want! You're mine forever, Paulo, you're already my everything!" In that chaotic rooftop lunch, with friends gawking, laughing, and whispering amid the intensifying sun and wind, Ava's fractured world felt whole again, because he held on.

But far below, hidden in the shadowed stairwell leading to the roof access, a jealous jock from class, his fists clenched white around the railing, eyes narrowed in burning envy at the intimate scene unfolding above, watched it all through the cracked door, his breath ragged with possessive rage. He had seen enough; something dark and vengeful stirred in his chest, and the rooftop's fragile peace was about to shatter forever.
