Chapter 5 - Revelation

CHAPTER FIVE

Lily stepped into the house as quietly as she could.

Her stepmother was in the kitchen, humming softly, cleaning something that didn't need cleaning. The faint smell of burnt toast lingered.

Her father sat in the living room, phone in hand, eyes glued to the screen.

"You're late," he said without looking up.

"I had to walk," Lily replied.

Her stepmother glanced at her from the sink. "You always do," she said. There was no anger in her voice. That made it worse.

Lily slipped off her shoes and carried them down the hall. She had learned long ago that arguing only made things harder.

Her room was at the end of the hall. Small. Bare. Quiet. The only place she could breathe. She closed the door and leaned against it.

Her hands were warm again. Like yesterday. Like the night before.

The lamp in the corner flickered.

Lily froze.

"Not now," she whispered.

The light steadied. The room felt… heavier. Something unseen had shifted.

She hugged her knees to her chest. Her heart raced.

Then she heard it: a faint movement from the corner of the room.

A man stepped out of the shadows—tall, calm, careful. Not sudden. Not threatening. But impossible to ignore.

"Don't come closer," Lily said at once.

He stopped.

"I won't," he said softly.

She tightened her grip on the blanket. "Who are you?"

"My name is Lucien," he said. "That's all you need to know for now."

She raised an eyebrow. "Why are you here?"

"Because something around you is… changing," he said. "And I want you to be aware of it."

Lily's stomach tightened. "I don't understand. I don't even know what you mean."

"You will," he said quietly. "But I can't explain everything yet. Not safely."

The lamp flickered again. Lily pointed at it. "Did you do that?"

"No," Lucien said.

"You did," she accused, her voice sharp.

"I didn't," he said. "It's coming from you."

She leaned back on the bed, putting distance between them. "This doesn't make sense."

"Most things don't," Lucien said. "Not until they do."

Her fingers dug into the blanket. "Then why are you even here?"

"Because someone else has noticed you," he said.

Her breath caught. "The man at the market?"

"Yes," Lucien said quietly.

"Why should I believe you?" she asked.

"You shouldn't," he admitted. "Not yet."

That threw her off.

"Then leave," she said.

Lucien hesitated, then nodded slightly. "I will," he said. "But… listen carefully. If the lights react to you again, or anything else feels wrong… don't follow anyone who promises easy answers."

"Why?"

"Because some people don't help. They take," he said.

Then he stepped back into the shadows. The room felt colder.

Lily hugged her knees tighter, her heart racing—not with trust, but with fear and questions.

And for the first time, the room didn't feel entirely empty.
