The next morning's break period felt heavier than usual. The central atrium was filled with the normal soft chatter and floating benches, but the whispers about Joren hadn't completely died. They had simply gone quieter, more careful.
Kairo, Elara, and Seraph sat at their usual spot near the edge. Kairo was leaning back, talking casually about a group assignment, trying to keep the mood light. Elara was quieter, still replaying her conversation with Seraph from the day before. Seraph watched everything with his usual calm.
Mara appeared at the edge of their group, hesitating for a second before stepping closer. She looked a little nervous, but determined.
"Hey, Kairo… can I talk to you again?"
Kairo smiled easily and gestured to the seat across from him. "Of course. Sit down."
Mara sat, glancing quickly at Elara and Seraph before focusing on Kairo. "I've been thinking about what you said yesterday in the hallway. About questions not being bad… and the system sometimes needing a little push."
Elara's fingers tightened around her drink. Seraph remained still, listening.
Kairo leaned forward slightly, giving her his full attention. "Yeah? What are you thinking?"
Mara lowered her voice. "It's just… Joren asked one innocent question and now he's gone. No one's talking about it openly, but everyone knows something happened. And you said maybe the system gets nervous when people ask things. Do you really think that's true?"
Before Kairo could answer, Elara spoke up, her tone sharper than she intended. "Kairo was only trying to calm Joren down. That's all. The system does what it does for a reason."
Mara looked at her, surprised. "But doesn't it bother you? One question and someone disappears?"
Seraph finally spoke, his voice calm and steady. "Wellness checks happen. It's not disappearance. It's protection. Joren probably just needed time to reset. He'll be back."
Mara didn't look convinced. She turned back to Kairo. "You seemed to understand what I was feeling yesterday. Like… it's okay to wonder."
Kairo kept his tone warm but thoughtful. "Wondering isn't the problem. It's when wondering turns into fear of asking at all. That's when harmony starts feeling like a cage instead of a choice."
The words landed.
Elara stared at Kairo, her suspicion from yesterday flaring again. Seraph's expression stayed neutral, but his fingers tapped once on the table — a tiny, almost invisible tell.
Mara exhaled. "I don't know. It just feels wrong. Thanks for not making me feel crazy for thinking about it."
"Anytime," Kairo said with a small smile. "We're all trying to figure this out together."
Mara stood up, gave them all a quick nod, and walked away.
The moment she was gone, Elara turned to Kairo. "What are you doing?"
Kairo raised an eyebrow innocently. "Talking to a classmate who's worried. Same as you would."
"You're encouraging her," Elara said quietly. "After everything with Joren. After what we talked about yesterday."
Seraph watched them both without interrupting.
Kairo leaned back. "I'm not encouraging rebellion. I'm just saying what I think. Isn't that what the Breakthrough is supposed to allow — honest conversation?"
Elara didn't answer right away. She looked at Seraph, hoping for support, but he only gave a small, non-committal shrug.
The break chime sounded.
Kairo stood first. "Come on. Next class."
As they walked away, Elara couldn't shake the feeling that the crack she had sensed yesterday was starting to widen.
