The transition from the open sea to the territory of the Snake Islands was not a change in scenery, but a change in reality. As the AeroSniff-Alpha crossed the invisible maritime border, the deep blue of the ocean turned into a stagnant, oily emerald. A fog so thick it felt like wet wool pressed against the viewports of the submersible.
"The external sensors are screaming, Noona," Tinker said, his voice tight. He was hunched over the radar array, his fox ears twitching rhythmically. "The acidity of the water is rising. If we weren't shielded by the Abyssal coating, the hull would be melting by now."
"Stay steady," Riha commanded. She stood behind him, her hand resting on the hilt of the Echo of the Abyss. The obsidian shells at her wrist clicked softly, sensing the malice in the water. "We're entering the Labyrinth of Fangs. The currents here are designed to pull ships into the jagged coral reefs."
The Veil of Illusions
As the vessel surfaced near the jagged outskirts of the islands, the toxic mist—the Viper's Breath—swirled around them. This wasn't just gas; it was a potent hallucinogen infused with snake-gene mana.
Riha stepped out onto the deck, her specialized mask filtering the air. Beside her, Tinker shifted into his human form, his silver eyes flashing. Immediately, the mist began to react. The fog didn't just drift; it shaped itself.
Riha saw the faces of the people she had failed in her past life. She saw a version of the Shadow Kingdom in flames, with Caspian and Lyra calling out to her from the wreckage.
"You brought us here to die, Riha..." the mist whispered in Lyra's voice.
Tinker growled, his hands igniting with silver fire. "It's a trick, Noona! Don't listen!"
"I know," Riha said, her voice unnervingly calm. She didn't close her eyes. Instead, she reached for the conch handle of her shell-whip. "The mist preys on the mind's frequency. To clear the path, I just need to change the tune."
She raised the whip and channeled her Mental Power into the conch.
"Shell-Song: First Movement—The Cleansing Tide!"
She snapped the whip. The obsidian shells didn't strike the air; they began to vibrate at a high, crystalline frequency. The sound was like a thousand glass bells ringing at once. The vibration rippled through the mist, shattering the illusory constructs. The faces of her friends dissolved into gray vapor, and the path forward—a narrow, treacherous channel between towering rock fangs—was finally revealed.
Encounter at the Gates
They moved forward on foot once the ground became too shallow for the submersible. The islands were a nightmare of swampy mangroves and black stone. Every tree looked like a coiled serpent, and the ground was littered with the shed skins of massive beasts.
As they reached the entrance to the inner sanctum—the Labyrinth of Fangs—the air grew cold.
Ssssssss.
From the shadows of the arched rock formations, four figures emerged. They were the Serpent Guard, elite warriors whose bodies had been fused with snake DNA. Their skin was covered in iridescent green scales, and their eyes were vertical slits of cold gold. They carried long, curved glaives coated in a dripping purple neurotoxin.
"No one enters the Forbidden Islands," the lead guard hissed, his tongue flickering. "Especially not a Shadow-born and her pet."
"I am the Shadow Sovereign," Riha said, her voice echoing with the First Sovereign's authority. "Step aside, or I will turn your scales into dust."
The guards laughed—a dry, rattling sound. "The Sovereign is a girl playing dress-up. Kill them."
The Dance of the Obsidian Shells
The guards moved with terrifying speed, sliding across the wet stone like actual serpents. Two lunged at Tinker, their glaives whistling through the air. Tinker leaped upward, his silver claws clashing against the poisoned metal.
Riha stood her ground as the other two circled her. One guard thrust his glaive at her throat, while the other swept his tail at her legs.
"Shell-Song: Second Movement—Swarm of the Abyss!"
Riha snapped her wrist. The obsidian shells detached from the chain, flying into the air like a cloud of shrapnel. Under her mental command, they didn't just fly randomly; they moved in a complex, geometric pattern.
The shells intercepted the glaive mid-air, the sound of the impact ringing like a gong. Before the guard could recover, a dozen razor-sharp shells swirled around him. They didn't cut deep—they vibrated. The guard screamed as the sonic frequency shattered his internal equilibrium. He collapsed to his knees, his golden eyes rolling back as his sense of balance vanished.
The second guard lunged from behind, but Riha didn't even turn. She waved her hand, and the shells converged behind her, forming a solid shield of vibrating obsidian. The guard's glaive hit the shield and snapped in half.
"I told you," Riha said, turning to face him. "I am not here to play."
With a flick of her fingers, the shells surged forward, knocking the guard unconscious with a blunt-force shockwave.
Into the Heart of the Nest
Tinker finished his fight, standing over the unconscious guards with a satisfied huff. "Their scales are tough, but they can't handle the noise, Noona. That weapon is a masterpiece."
"It's just a tool," Riha said, the shells clicking back into place on her arm. She looked up at the towering, snake-shaped palace carved into the mountain at the end of the labyrinth. "The real challenge is inside. I can feel it... the pulse of the Emperor is getting stronger."
She felt the First Sovereign's spirit stir within her. 'He is near,' the voice whispered in her mind. 'And he is hungry.'
Riha took a deep breath, her eyes glowing with a fierce, violet determination. "Let's go. We have a princess to rescue and a king to put back to sleep."
As they stepped into the dark maw of the palace entrance, the mist closed in behind them, sealing the way out. The Labyrinth was passed, but the true nightmare of the Snake Islands was only just beginning.
