Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: The Financial Anomaly

Abby waited until the evening. Liam was downstairs, in the secured communications center, presumably reviewing Rook's fruitless perimeter reports. The lodge was silent, the sound insulation only emphasizing the vastness of the Canadian forest outside.

She walked down the narrow, reinforced stairs, carrying only her encrypted laptop. The room Liam used was small, entirely metallic, and humming with highly advanced technology. It was his bunker within the bunker.

Liam looked up, his expression instantly shifting from focused concentration to annoyance. "Abby, I told you to stay upstairs. You shouldn't be down here; this is active communication."

"I'm here to submit my quarterly report," Abby said, her voice cool and steady, placing the laptop on a small side table. She opened a single, labeled file: "Sentinel Data Analysis."

Liam frowned, confused by her professional tone. "I don't need a presentation on municipal bonds, Abby. We can review that later."

"This isn't bonds, Liam. This is Elias's breadcrumb trail," she stated, activating the screen so he could see the transaction details. "Six months ago, $75,000 was paid from the Family Trust Oversight Office to a shell company in Cyprus for 'Litigation Research Consultation.' Sentinel Data Services. No online footprint. P.O. box known for anonymous corporate data laundering. The funds were disbursed just weeks before Elias went quiet and a few months before you announced the wedding."

Liam stared at the screen, his mind, tuned to analyze risk and capital flow, snapping instantly into focus. He stood up, towering over her, but his attention was fixed entirely on the data.

"That is not litigation research," he murmured, his hands resting on the table as he absorbed the implication. "That is a pre-emptive security vulnerability audit. Elias didn't breach the system himself; he paid a professional to find the holes, and then used that information to plant the mic and get the master key copy."

"Precisely," Abby confirmed, feeling the rush of a massive professional win, even in this terrifying context. "He bought the playbook. Rook's team is looking for a physical breach or a known operative. They are looking in the dirt. But Elias is a financial predator; he uses clean money for dirty work. He found the vulnerability in your perimeter, not your locks."

Liam slowly straightened up, his eyes now blazing with a mixture of anger, grudging respect, and an undeniable acknowledgment of her competency. He had kept her out of the war zone, but she had just delivered the enemy's intelligence report.

"You went into the non public logs," he observed, his tone a mix of accusation and admiration.

"You gave me network access, Liam. I'm a Sterling executive; I look for anomalies. I wasn't managing a bond portfolio; I was performing covert due diligence on a hostile actor using the only tools you allowed me to access," Abby said, matching his intensity. "You forbade me from the hunt. I found a target you missed. I found the vector Elias used to breach my study."

She leaned in, driving home her final demand. "The war just changed, Liam. This is no longer about my protection; it's about our partnership. You need the asset-management mind, and I need the information to protect the baby I'm carrying. You can't stop me from working, and I won't stop until Elias is neutralized. I demand a seat in the war room."
