Chapter 101 - Chapter 18: Fate Changer

The voice opposite her bristled with anger. "In that case, we have no reason to follow a human and abandon our homeland…"

"You still have a homeland?" Sen Getsusa quipped. "Weren't you being chased everywhere? I heard some of you still live out in the wild."

The girl's meaningful gaze drifted to Spiller; he glared back, baring his teeth.

"I think you've misunderstood me."

"The place beside me is reserved only for those who crave a wider World and love thrilling adventures—so—"

Sen Getsusa teased, "Those of you making demands are just extras. I don't care whether you come or not."

The peach-Heart leaf buzzed with noise again while Sen Getsusa propped her chin and met Arrietty's eyes.

Suddenly, the Profiler began to tremble faintly.

The diamond-shaped rhizome of the plant in front of her lit up once more.

A violet curtain reminded Sen Getsusa.

[Multiversal energy detected.]

[Group teleportation array activating.]

Before the girl could react, a crisp childish voice rang through the space, a tender tone circling the plant.

"Hiya hiya"

"Moshi moshi?"

"This is Aminatu's message!"

"Fae who wish to follow Sen Getsusa on her journey, hold faith in your Hearts and silently speak her name."

"It's fine if you'd rather not, y'know."

The innocent, piping voice turned sinister.

"You'll all die sooner or later anyway."

With that, the voice shifted, turning to Sen Getsusa in a tone no longer cold:

"Hiya Big Sis I'm Aminatu."

"Beep-beep, can you hear me?"

"No need to reply—this is just a recording."

The girl's voice hopped from left ear to right, playfully brushing Sen Getsusa's earring, then slipped like a fish into her hair, popped out on top, and lay across the black strands.

"They call me Fate Changer, but eh, I don't like the name."

"These little ones are my gift to Big Sis."

"Do you like them?"

In the giggling recording the speaker seemed to be licking something; after a pause, a chill crept up Sen Getsusa's neck… "You're not thinking of refusing to be my sister, are you?"

"Accept this gift and it means you've agreed."

Pop-pop of bursting bubbles filled the air, then the voice quickened.

"Whoops, trouble's coming!"

"See ya next time, then."

"My dear Eternal Silver Moon, Mad Princess."

The voice faded.

Sen Getsusa pressed her lips together.

Who exactly is Aminatu… will more people keep turning up to claim kinship… Arrietty, too excited to ponder such things, stared wide-eyed as the emerald gem-thread she had shot earlier began to retract.

One after another, tiny silhouettes appeared around the plant; space twisted and tangled, transparent shards knitting together.

"They're here! They're really here!"

Arrietty leapt for joy, standing on Sen Getsusa's hand and watching the figures solidify.

A dozen small folk, male and female, all young.

Behind a few of the youths stood their parents.

The little ones studied Sen Getsusa with curiosity.

At their center, a short-haired, martial girl caught the eye.

She gripped a huge warhammer, gaze sharp.

Stepping forward, she asked bluntly, "Are you Sen Getsusa?"

"If what you say is true, we're willing to leave with you."

"Give us a living space of our own, free from outside disturbance."

"In return, we'll fight for you!"

The short-haired girl spoke plainly for the rest; the massive hammer whirled effortlessly in her hands.

"All of us can fight; the others—yes, those—are master craftsmen who farm and forge. If needed, we can even make our own armor."

"Just supply the iron."

As they talked, the gem-green threads dissolved.

[Group teleportation complete.]

A green dot appeared on each Tontatta's chest; the emerald hue spread, dyeing their bodies.

A card materialized in the air.

[Creature Attendant:]

[Borrower Fae (Silver)]

[An ancient race that lost its magic in a great war and vanished into history's ruins.]

[Their ancestors once followed a Planeswalker across the Multiverse; today these fae have chosen the right path.]

[With help from the Fate Changer, they are reclaiming their lost bloodline.]

[Note: the road to Gold lies beneath yellow sand.]

One by one the emerald borrowers drifted into slumber.

Eyes closed, they let jade threads wrap and weave them into shining cocoons.

Sen Getsusa gathered them together so no sleep-walker would roll off the table.

She lowered her gaze and kept reading.

[Ability:]

[Forsaken Children:]

[A race exiled by mystery and reality.]

[Invisible to any means of detection save the naked eye.]

[Assassins vanished even from the gods' memory.]

[Willful:]

[An inborn rejection of magic runs in their blood.]

[If they wish, Borrower Fae can ignore most magics of the Multiverse.]

[Accordingly, their attacks can pierce those bothersome spells too.]

An interesting race.

Sen Getsusa dismissed the curtain and looked again at the green cocoons.

Small elongated shapes, like dark-green black holes, drank in the room's light.

From their tops they melted downward like mercury, revealing the fae inside.

The cocoons kept dissolving; fibrous residue wove itself into clothes and shoes.

Those who wanted more got more; those content with little received simple garb.

The fae were transformed.

Arrietty's fiery coral hair stayed the same, only her ears grew pointed and her pupils bright emerald.

She flexed her hand, pulled the sewing needle from her waist, and—hup!—flung it.

Bang!

The needle pierced the wall, the yard wall, and the cherry tree outside.

With tremendous force it sank into the next apartment's wall, spider-web cracks spreading around it.

"Cool!" Arrietty squealed, leaping from the table to Sen Getsusa's shoulder and swinging from her hair. "This is a real knight!"

Sen Getsusa's eyes curved in a smile as she looked at the other fae.

They too had emerged from their cocoons, gazing reverently with green pupils at Sen Getsusa.
