Chapter 77 - A Story from Ten Years Ago

Jane Miller stood frozen, her hand still pressing the phone to her ear even though the connection had long since been severed. An overflowing rage turned her face a deep, mottled crimson.

"LEO!" Jane screamed with every ounce of her strength. She swung her arm and hurled the expensive device against the wall, watching it shatter into a thousand jagged pieces.

Her breath came in rapid, shallow hitches. Her chest heaved erratically as she stared fixedly at the debris on the floor. Slowly, however, her resolve crumbled. Her shoulders began to shake violently, and the sobs she had tried to suppress finally broke free. Jane collapsed onto the floor, hiding her face behind her hands as she wailed. Her cries sounded hollow and strained, as if the decade of frustration she had harbored had finally reached its breaking point.

A short while later at the hospital, the doors to the trauma room finally swung open. A doctor dressed in surgical scrubs stepped out, pulling his mask down.
