Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Truth Beneath the Moon

The night Selara crossed the inner boundary of the Blackclaw lands, the forest was alive with anticipation. The moon hung low, swollen and luminous, silver light spilling across the trees like molten metal. Every shadow seemed sharper, every rustle louder, and every scent heavier, charged with something alive and waiting. The air pressed against her skin, cool and electric, and each step she took brought her closer to truths she had long skirted, to a reality she had ignored for far too long.

Her cloak brushed against roots and fallen leaves as she moved, each step deliberate. Heart pounding, she reminded herself that there was no turning back. Too many nights had been spent pretending she didn't notice the inhuman grace of the pack, their eyes gleaming with something more than instinct, the way the forest itself seemed to shift around their presence. Too many moments of fleeting awareness had been swallowed by denial. Tonight, she would face the truth.

Voices drifted through the trees ahead, low, masculine, threaded with tension and restraint. Selara slowed, instinctively lowering herself to a crouch, her movements silent as she approached the clearing. The trees opened suddenly, revealing a wide circle of flattened earth scarred with claw marks and moon-bleached scars. She recognized it instantly this was where they went on full-moon nights. Where they told her never to follow. Where lies ended.

At the center of the clearing stood Kael. Shirtless, the moonlight tracing the sharp lines of his shoulders, the faint scars across his spine. His fists were clenched at his sides, breaths deep and uneven, as if holding something within himself by sheer force of will. Around him, the inner circle moved with purpose, wolves hidden in human skin, tension radiating off each of them in visible waves.

Selara's breath caught.

Riven stepped forward first, closing his eyes. The transformation began with subtle shifts, horrifyingly beautiful. Bones cracked beneath skin, muscles stretching and corded, spine elongating with terrifying fluidity. A scream tore through the night, raw and animal, before fur erupted over his body, dark and gleaming under the moonlight. In seconds, a massive wolf stood in his place, eyes lifting to the moon, gold and piercing.

Selara staggered back, a hand flying to her mouth to stifle a gasp. It was real. All of it.

One by one, the others followed, the clearing filling with towering wolves of black, silver, ash, and blood-brown fur. Power radiated off them in waves, primal and intoxicating. The ground trembled under their paws, and the air thickened with the metallic tang of magic and musk.

Kael remained human. His jaw was clenched, veins visible on his arms, hands trembling as if resisting some invisible force. Sweat slicked his skin despite the cool night air.

"Shift," Riven growled, his voice distorted yet unmistakable. "You can't fight it forever."

Kael's reply was a low, guttural snarl, too deep for any human. "I said no."

"You're losing control," another wolf warned. "The bond is already unstable."

Bond. The word struck Selara like lightning. Her knees weakened as she took an instinctive step back. A twig snapped underfoot. Every glowing gaze turned toward her. The clearing froze.

Kael's eyes widened, a mix of disbelief and alarm. "Selara… no. You weren't supposed to see this."

She shook her head, tears threatening to spill. "So it's true."

The silence that followed pressed in, suffocating. Kael stepped forward cautiously, each motion measured, restrained, as if afraid his own power would betray him. "You shouldn't be here," he said softly.

"You lied to me," Selara's voice trembled, yet it cut clean through the tension. "All of you did."

Riven shifted closer, towering and imposing. "She knows now. Nothing can change that."

Selara's gaze never wavered from Kael. "What are you?"

Pain crossed his features, raw and unguarded. "I'm… the same man you've always known. And I'm a wolf."

The words sank deep into her bones.

"And me?" she asked quietly. "What am I to you?"

Kael hesitated, swallowing hard. "You are…"

"The mate," Riven interjected, his voice calm, certain. "The bond has chosen her."

The world tilted beneath Selara. A bitter laugh escaped her lips, sharp and broken. "That's not funny."

"It's not a joke," Kael admitted, his eyes darkening with conflict. "I didn't want this for you."

"You didn't want to tell me," she snapped, "or give me a choice."

His shoulders slumped, tension leaving him in a sigh. "Because once you know, once you're… part of this world, there's no turning back. And humans aren't meant for it."

"Human?" Selara's voice dropped. "You're saying I'm human."

Kael's silence spoke volumes.

Something inside her cracked, a mixture of anger and revelation. "All this time," she whispered, "the dreams, the pull, the way I feel when you're near… that's magic?"

Kael's gaze softened but remained serious. "It's the bond," he said. "It awakened when you crossed into our territory months ago. Humans aren't supposed to awaken it, but…"

Selara's voice grew fierce. "I did. And you felt it too."

His eyes darkened, a flicker of vulnerability showing. "Yes."

"Then don't tell me I don't belong," she said, stepping fully into the clearing. The wolves tensed, hackles rising, but Kael raised a hand sharply, halting them.

"You don't understand," he said. "The bond will change you. It will pull you deeper into this world. And if you're not strong enough"

"Then let me decide," she cut him off. "Not you."

The moonlight shifted, washing her in silver. Heat bloomed beneath her skin, coursing through her veins with wildfire intensity. She gasped, clutching her chest as the surge of magic rolled through her, aching and familiar. Kael's eyes widened.

"No," he whispered, awe and fear mingling in his voice. "That's… impossible."

The ground beneath her feet vibrated, the forest alive with energy. Her senses sharpened. Every sound layered over another. The scent of pine, earth, and wolf musk overwhelmed her. Her vision snapped into crystalline focus, seeing the subtle glimmer of magic threaded through the world.

Riven let out a low, stunned sound. "She's awakening."

Selara's voice trembled, raw. "I'm not a wolf… am I?"

Kael stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time. "No," he said slowly. "You're… something older. Something different."

Riven whispered, reverent. "A Nightborne. I thought your kind was extinct."

Selara swayed as the power inside her surged and receded like a tide. Kael caught her instantly, arms solid and warm, grounding her. The bond between them flared brightly, a living pulse visible in the moonlight.

Tears streamed down her face as she looked up at him. "You knew?"

"I suspected," he admitted softly. "But I hoped I was wrong."

"Why?"

"Because Nightborne don't belong to just one wolf," he said, voice hushed. "They're bound to the moon… and sometimes, to choice as well. Not fate, not the goddess. Choice. That's why it can't be forced. That's why…"

The words settled between them, heavy with unspoken meaning.

A second presence stirred at the edge of the clearing. Selara felt it before she saw him—a pull, different from Kael's but just as strong. Slowly, a man stepped from the shadows, tall, dark-haired, gaze sharp and assessing. Unlike the others, he did not shift. His power was restrained, precise, dangerous.

Kael's posture stiffened. "Alaric."

"The bond has revealed her," Alaric said, voice calm, eyes never leaving Selara. "I was wondering how long you would hide her."

"Hiding her from you?" Kael snapped, protective and furious.

Alaric's lips curved faintly. "You don't own her."

Selara's heartbeat thundered. "Who is he?"

"The Alpha of the Northern Pack," Kael said tersely.

"And," Alaric added, "someone who feels the bond too."

Shock rippled through her. "No," Selara whispered. "That's… not possible."

"It is," Alaric replied gently. "You are Nightborne, Selara. You don't belong to one wolf. The moon guides you, but you choose. And sometimes, it chooses more than one path for you."

Kael's hand tightened around hers, possessive, desperate. "I won't lose her."

Alaric met his glare evenly. "Neither of us does. Only she chooses."

Every gaze turned toward Selara. The weight of it pressed against her chest, the realization that she had always been the master of her own fate finally sinking in.

She drew a deep, steadying breath. "I will not run. I will not choose tonight. I will learn what I am, what this bond means, and what power it carries. And when the time comes, I will decide my own fate."

The moon pulsed above them, silver light spilling across the clearing, approving, illuminating her choice.

Kael searched her face, fear, awe, and something deeper warring in his gaze. "Selara…"

She squeezed his hand gently. "If you truly care for me, you'll stop trying to cage me."

He closed his eyes, then nodded. "I swear it."

Alaric inclined his head. "Then the game has truly begun."

The clearing exhaled, wolves shifting uneasily as inevitability settled like a tide. Selara's gaze lifted to the moon, feeling its call in her veins, aware that her life had split into before and after. Somewhere, the threads of fate began to move, weaving trials and choices that she alone would have to face.

She was Nightborne. She was free. And she would decide what that meant.
