Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Respite

The courtyard did not celebrate. When the last Apex Echo died and the surviving players returned, there was no exhausted cheering or laughter like there had been after earlier waves. People remained wherever the System deposited them, some leaning against ruined weapons while others simply sat down on the bloodstained stone because their legs had stopped cooperating. Ozone lingered from the Echo battles, mixing with smoke, old magic, and the sour metallic stink of too much blood spilled across too little ground. Nine survivors remained. Nine out of everyone who had been standing there before the Speed Round began. Lena still clung to Helena nearby, her grief over Evan too fresh for words, while Dorian stood apart long enough to let the reality settle into him. Then the System returned to business. Translucent panes opened throughout the courtyard and layered across one another with mechanical efficiency, as though the deaths were nothing more than completed calculations waiting to be filed.

[BLITZ ROUND COMPLETION CONFIRMED]

SPEED ROUND MODIFIER: SUCCESSFUL

BONUS EXPERIENCE APPLIED

LOOT SCALING: ACCELERATED

There was no acknowledgment of Evan or any of the others who had failed to return from their arenas. The System delivered the results and immediately continued.

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL UP]

Dorian felt all three levels hit almost simultaneously. Power moved beneath his skin and through muscle, bone, and nerves with the familiar sensation of his body being rebuilt around increasingly unnatural numbers. Level eighteen. Helena and Lena received their own gains nearby, each reacting when the System altered them, while several of the remaining survivors earned one or two levels. The difference between those who had merely survived the Speed Round and those who had carried portions of it was becoming increasingly obvious. Dorian opened his attributes.

Strength had repeatedly saved him when fights collapsed into brutality, and Perception had become the foundation of almost everything he did, but the Echo fight had exposed another weakness. Lightning devoured mana. Shadow demanded more every time he pushed it beyond its intended limits. Predator's Focus increased the burden further, forcing his mind to process more information while his existing reserves struggled to support everything else. He moved his new points into Intelligence and Wisdom. The change didn't arrive as another dramatic surge of strength. It felt deeper and steadier. His mana capacity expanded while the strain surrounding its use eased slightly. Dorian understood the lesson. Raw power meant nothing if he exhausted himself before the fight ended. The next notification surprised him.

[QUEST REWARDS DISTRIBUTING]

[EQUIPMENT PACKAGE EARNED]

Armor began assembling in front of him piece by piece. The first item resolved into a sleek black chest piece built from layered material Dorian couldn't identify. It looked lighter than the protection several Vanguard players had worn but substantially stronger than anything he currently possessed. The moment he equipped it, the armor adjusted around his torso and settled against him without restricting his shoulders. He pushed a small amount of mana through his body experimentally and immediately noticed the difference.

The familiar bite of magical backlash remained, but its edge had been dulled. Dark fitted legwear followed, reinforced along the thighs and knees without compromising movement, then boots designed around traction and silent speed. His Alpha Wolf Hide reacted when the next item formed. The old cloak dissolved from his shoulders in drifting motes while a heavier mantle replaced it, black enough that the surrounding light seemed to disappear into the fabric. Shadows around Dorian's boots stretched toward it for a moment before settling. The Grasp of the Ones Above changed last. Pain stabbed briefly behind his eyes as the gloves pulsed across his hands.

His Perception sharpened automatically, but this time the enhancement did not fade back into the equipment. The sensation sank deeper until his eyes themselves seemed to become the source. Details across the courtyard clarified without conscious effort. Tiny movements, subtle changes in breathing, the balance of bodies standing dozens of feet away. The gloves remained around his hands, but something fundamental had changed between them. They had taught his body what they once provided.

Dorian flexed his fingers. "Well, that's not ominous at all." Two weapons materialized next. Both were daggers, but neither resembled the Fang of the Vampyr Lord. One was dark enough along the edge that the blade seemed to disappear whenever Dorian looked away from it. The other carried a quieter pressure, less overtly predatory but somehow colder.

Dorian looked down at himself after the last pane disappeared. The equipment changed his silhouette completely. Black armor fit close enough for movement, the new cloak hanging heavily from his shoulders while the two Legendary daggers rested naturally in his hands. The Fang of the Vampyr Lord remained his.

He wasn't ready to discard something that had repeatedly kept him alive, especially when its ability to steal lifeforce offered something neither new weapon duplicated exactly. He placed it inside the Vault of Unseen instead. Around him, Helena and Lena were receiving equipment tailored toward their evolved classes. Helena's rewards reinforced survivability and curse control, giving her protection designed to let her maintain layered magic without destroying herself through backlash. Lena's equipment leaned toward mana efficiency and precision, amplifying the controlled fire she had begun relying upon during the Speed Round. Dorian looked automatically for Evan before the thought caught up with him. The empty space beside Lena hurt worse than he expected. Wilhelm, however, looked almost unchanged. Dorian frowned. "You didn't get gear?" Wilhelm folded his hands inside his sleeves. "The System allowed me to exchange the equipment package for additional experience." Dorian glanced toward him.

"You took levels instead?"

"I considered them more useful."

"What level?" Wilhelm smiled faintly. "Eighteen." Dorian smirked despite himself. "Keeping up with me. Nice job, Professor."

"Likewise." Dorian opened his status one final time.

WARNING:

Extended use causes sensory overload and neurological strain.

The numbers were becoming absurd. Dorian barely recognized the character sheet of the Level One Rogue who had stood outside Helena's dorm only days earlier. Slayer. Apex Predator. Nearly two hundred Agility before Level Twenty. Legendary weapons. Eyes permanently altered by divine equipment.

The System was rebuilding him faster than he could decide whether he liked what it was making. Beneath the rewards, one problem remained unchanged. The curse notification pulsed quietly at the edge of the interface. Still active. Still progressing. Dorian dismissed the screen and looked across the ruined courtyard. They had been rewarded generously because the System expected them to need every bit of it. That understanding stripped most of the excitement from the gear. The courtyard slowly emptied as the surviving players sought whatever privacy or rest remained inside the damaged university. Nobody wanted to stay among the bodies longer than necessary. People disappeared into buildings in pairs or small groups, speaking quietly while avoiding the sections of campus where the most blood had collected. Helena eventually touched Dorian's arm. "Come with me." He followed without asking where. They walked through damaged hallways until Helena found a classroom that had somehow escaped the worst destruction. Several desks had overturned and papers covered the floor, but the windows remained intact and pale daylight filtered through them. Helena closed the door. For several seconds, she simply looked at him. Then her eyes moved toward his cursed arm. "Take the armor off." Dorian hesitated before dismissing the chest piece and pulling his shirt away. Helena's expression changed immediately. The curse had spread farther than she knew.

Gray-black skin covered his entire arm, crossed his shoulder, and webbed across nearly half his chest in branching patterns that pulsed faintly beneath the surface. Some sections carried a metallic sheen when the light struck them. It didn't resemble decay anymore. The curse looked organized, almost deliberate, like something gradually claiming territory. Helena reached toward him and traced the boundary between normal skin and the darkened flesh with trembling fingers. "It's spreading again."

"I know." She looked up sharply.

"You didn't tell me it had gotten this far." Dorian covered her hand with his. "Because it isn't winning."

"How do you know?" The fear in her voice was quiet enough to hurt more than if she had shouted. Dorian considered the answer instead of simply reassuring her. "Because I'm still here. It hurts all the time now, and the instincts are stronger. Shadow feels easier to reach than it used to. Sometimes Slayer wants things that I don't." Helena's face tightened. "That isn't helping."

"I'm not done." He gently lifted her chin. "The difference is that I still decide. I feel all of it, but I choose what happens next. The Echo proved that." Helena studied him for several seconds before some of the tension finally left her shoulders. Her hand drifted down over his ribs and she gave an incredulous little laugh. "You know, if the apocalypse hadn't happened, you'd look like one of those fitness influencers who swears he doesn't count macros." Dorian snorted. "Putting points into Strength has benefits."

"Apparently." Her smile became real, and for a moment she looked like the Helena he remembered from before any of this happened. She leaned forward and rested her forehead against his chest just above the closest edge of the curse. Dorian wrapped his arms around her. Neither spoke. After Evan, the Echoes, and everything the System had taken, simply standing there together felt almost impossible. Helena finally looked up. "We don't know what happens next."

"No."

"And Evan..." Her voice caught on his name. She swallowed before continuing. "He was here, and then he wasn't. Just like that. I keep thinking about how easily that could've been you." Dorian brushed his thumb across her cheek. "It wasn't."

"This time." Helena kissed him before he could answer.

Dorian pulled her closer and kissed her back, neither of them trying to turn the moment into anything more complicated than what it was. They needed each other. They needed something that belonged to the life they had chosen rather than the one the System kept forcing on them. What followed stayed theirs, away from monsters, notifications, and the dead waiting outside the classroom. For a little while, they allowed the rest of the world to disappear. Later, Helena rested against Dorian with her head on his chest while pale afternoon light stretched across the classroom floor. His arm remained around her shoulders as she traced small patterns against the edge of the curse without touching the darkest portions. "You're not alone," she said quietly.

"Whatever this thing does to you, whatever the System tries to turn you into, you don't get to disappear inside it." Dorian looked down at her. Helena's eyes were wet, though she refused to let the tears fall. "Evan made all of this real in a way it wasn't before. We can actually lose each other." She tightened her hand against him. "I can't lose you too." Dorian kissed the top of her head. "I'm not going anywhere." It was a promise neither of them could guarantee, and they both knew it. Helena still closed her eyes against him as if choosing to believe it mattered. For a few precious minutes, the university remained quiet. Then somewhere beyond the classroom walls, the System timer continued counting down. The final wave was still waiting for them. They had gained levels, weapons, armor, and enough power to become nearly unrecognizable from the students who had entered the Tutorial. None of it changed the simplest truth. They were still alive, and for now, they still had each other.
