Chapter 146 - Could Mengmeng Really Be His Daughter?

"Mengmeng, can you tell me why you insisted on making me your dad back then?" Jiang Ning asked, gently holding her hand, his voice filled with concern and curiosity.

He longed to understand her inner thoughts. Did she feel the same indescribable closeness he had felt upon their first meeting?

"Daddy, why are you suddenly asking this?" Mengmeng tilted her head, her face a picture of confusion. The question seemed strange to her.

Jiang Ning gazed tenderly into her eyes and smiled. "I just feel we have a special connection, and now that you're my most precious daughter, I wanted to know what you were thinking back then."

Mengmeng pondered for a moment before answering seriously, "Daddy, I don't know why either. But from the moment Mom brought you here and I saw you, I just knew you were my dad."

Though she didn't explicitly mention that feeling of closeness, to Jiang Ning, her simple declaration—"You are my dad"—was more profound than any words could convey.

Jiang Ning gazed at Mengmeng, his heart filled with a complex mix of emotions.

Could Mengmeng truly be his biological daughter? Could such a coincidence exist in the world? Had that night not been a mere spring dream, but a real event?

But why had the girl who jumped into the water acted this way? Why had she left so abruptly? And why had she heartlessly abandoned Mengmeng? If all this were true, how should he respond?

What if he had already married Su Meng? What if Mengmeng's mother came knocking one day? How would he handle such a delicate situation?

Given Su Meng's personality, she would never easily relinquish Mengmeng.

Though he had the ability to heal Su Meng and enable her to bear children, she had already come to treat Mengmeng as her own daughter, a fact Jiang Ning had observed and cherished.

Would Mengmeng choose to leave him and Su Meng to return to her biological mother?

The more Jiang Ning pondered, the more tangled his thoughts became, like a ball of yarn.

Who was that girl? He had no information about her—not even her name or origin.

When he had rescued her, she had been dazed and silent, not even glancing at Jiang Ning or Su Che.

"Never mind, don't overthink it," Jiang Ning told himself. "Maybe I'll take Mengmeng for a DNA test someday. Who knows, she might not even be my biological daughter."

"Daddy, what's wrong?" Mengmeng asked, her big, innocent eyes shining. "When you first met me, didn't you think I was your precious daughter too?"

She smiled brightly, her expression full of certainty.

"Yes," Jiang Ning nodded gently. "Mengmeng, let's continue our English lesson."

The two soon immersed themselves in their English conversation and teaching session.

Before they knew it, they had arrived at the door of Villa A19.

Jiang Ning pressed the doorbell.

*Ding-dong*

Zhang Haichen, Tang Xiachuan's elderly butler, came to open the door. With a polite smile, he asked, "Hello, Master Jiang. And who is this?"

"Butler Zhang, this is my daughter, Mengmeng. Mengmeng, say hello to Grandpa Zhang." Jiang Ning smiled at his daughter.

"Hello, Grandpa Zhang."

Perhaps because she had been so focused on her English lesson, Mengmeng unconsciously greeted Zhang Haichen in English.

Zhang Haichen was momentarily taken aback, but quickly responded to Mengmeng in English: "Hello there, Mengmeng. You're so cute and beautiful."

As Tang Xiachuan's long-time butler, Zhang Haichen was no ordinary man. His English was fluent and natural.

"Grandpa Zhang, your English pronunciation sounds a little funny," Mengmeng said innocently, correcting him.

Mengmeng's English had been meticulously taught by Jiang Ning, who had patiently corrected her pronunciation over and over. As a result, her English was remarkably authentic, with a slight childish lilt that made it sound quite pure.

Zhang Haichen's English, though fluent, carried a distinct Eastern accent.

"Mengmeng, you shouldn't speak to Grandpa Zhang like that. It's impolite," Jiang Ning quickly and softly instructed.

Mengmeng playfully stuck out her tongue and obediently replied, "Oh, okay, Daddy."

Zhang Haichen waved his hand and laughed. "No harm done, no harm done. Mengmeng's English is indeed very authentic. I can't compare. Come in, quickly."

Just then, the melodious sound of a *erhu* drifted from within the villa.

Jiang Ning led Mengmeng through the iron gate. Hearing the familiar melody, he paused and said, "I didn't know Old Master Tang played the *erhu*."

In Jiang Ning's memory, the *erhu* had been quite popular among the older generation, with many seniors enjoying playing a tune during their leisure time.

But nowadays, young people were more inclined to play the piano or guitar, and even those who played the violin outnumbered those who played the *erhu*.

"It's Old Master Tang playing," Zhang Haichen explained with a smile. "When he has nothing else to do, he likes to play the *erhu* and practice calligraphy. These are the only two hobbies he has."

"Mm," Jiang Ning nodded in understanding.

"Dad plays the *erhu* the best!"

Mengmeng, standing nearby, once again "betrayed" Jiang Ning, brimming with pride in her father's abilities.

Whenever she had the chance, she couldn't resist showing off her father's skills, which made her exceptionally happy.

It was like at Qingbei University, when she watched Jiang Ning lecture from the second floor. Though she pressed her face against the window, her heart swelled with delight, for the man at the podium was her father.

Hearing this, Zhang Haichen couldn't help but praise, "Oh, Master Jiang, you play the *erhu* too? It's rare to find young people who play the *erhu* these days. Remarkable, truly remarkable!"

Jiang Ning responded modestly, "Butler Zhang, you flatter me. I only know a little bit about it."

The three stood at the door, silently listening to the erhu melody until the piece concluded.

*Knock, knock.* Zhang Haichen then gently tapped on the living room door.

"Come in."

Inside, Tang Xiachuan put away his erhu and hurried to his feet, a warm smile on his face. "Master Jiang, my apologies for keeping you waiting at the door."

"Not at all," Jiang Ning replied politely. "It was my honor to hear Old Master Tang's erhu performance."

Tang Xiachuan smiled as he looked at Mengmeng. "Please, have a seat. This must be Master Jiang's daughter, Mengmeng."

Jiang Ning nodded. "Yes, this is my daughter, Mengmeng. Mengmeng, say hello to Grandpa Tang."

"Hello, Grandpa Tang," Mengmeng said, habitually switching to her native English.

Tang Xiachuan laughed heartily, responding in English, "Hahaha, hello there, little Mengmeng!"

This time, Mengmeng had learned her lesson. Instead of pointing out Tang Xiachuan's imperfect English accent, she simply gave him a slightly odd look.
