Outside the chairman's office at Kyoto International Airport, squads of National Security officers stood in neat formation.
Each held a rifle, their eyes as sharp as hawks as they scanned the surroundings. The atmosphere was so tense it felt as though it could be cut with a knife.
Inside the office, an elderly man sat calmly behind his desk while a middle-aged man stood beside him. Both were watching the surveillance screen displaying Jiang Ning and Tang Xiachuan.
"Guo'er," the old man asked gently, "it's been twenty-three years. Have you ever blamed me for the decision I made back then?"
The middle-aged man replied respectfully,
"Father, how could I? The circumstances were extraordinary, and I understand why you made that choice."
"Now Ning'er has grown into an outstanding young man. From everything we've learned about his life, he's steady, thoughtful, and kind-hearted."
"The only thing is... he's a little too cautious. Almost overly humble, even somewhat lacking in confidence. That part isn't like you or me."
The old man sighed softly.
"Actually, I rather like that personality."
"Being overly arrogant never ends well. Keeping a low profile is the way to survive."
"Still... what do you think about Ning'er registering his marriage with the Su family's girl?"
The middle-aged man answered without hesitation.
"I have no objections. I respect Ning'er's decision."
"To be honest, the Su family's daughter isn't worthy of our Ning'er."
"But as long as he likes her, I won't interfere."
"My only concern is that after all these years, he still doesn't know his true identity."
"When the truth comes out... whether he'll accept us is anyone's guess."
The old man spoke firmly.
"Haichuan and his wife will soon meet with the Su family to discuss the engagement and wedding."
"It's time for us to step forward as well."
His son immediately grew anxious.
"But Father, if we appear publicly, Ning'er's identity will be exposed."
"The Americans and the Japanese have been watching in secret all this time."
"I'm afraid he'll become a target."
The old man's gaze was profound.
"What must come will eventually come."
"If Ning'er can't even withstand this level of trial, then he doesn't deserve to be my grandson."
"A young eagle can only soar through the heavens after leaving its mother's protection."
"Keeping a low profile is a virtue."
"But overcoming every obstacle while remaining low-key—that is the mark of a true king and a true strategist."
His son nodded.
"Father, Ning'er is currently under S-Class protection with one National Security team assigned to him."
"Should we raise his protection to the highest S-Class level?"
The old man pondered briefly.
"Has he revealed any hidden talents we haven't discovered yet?"
His son immediately reported,
"So far, we've confirmed that Ning'er is a Grandmaster of Dance, Grandmaster of Erhu, Grandmaster Brewer..."
"...a Master of Calligraphy, Ancient Medicine, Literature, Piano, Painting, Antique Appraisal, and Martial Arts."
"His carpentry and fairy-tale writing are probably at an intermediate level."
"He's also fluent in authentic German and English."
"As for anything else... we don't know yet."
Hearing the list, pride gradually filled the old man's eyes.
"Now that is my grandson."
"Ning'er possesses more talent than either you or I by hundreds—no, thousands—of times."
"But what's strange is this..."
"Our people have been monitoring him all these years."
"Yet none of these abilities were ever apparent."
"We never even found evidence of him secretly studying them."
His son looked equally puzzled.
"I can't figure it out either."
"It seems he only began displaying these abilities after becoming the Su family's temporary nanny."
"The erhu may have come from Haichuan's influence."
"The brewing probably came from helping his aunt Shulan when he was little."
"But everything else..."
"I have no explanation."
He hesitated before continuing.
"Father... Mengmeng is your great-granddaughter."
"But we're still investigating the identity of her biological mother."
"Our reports from three years ago only recorded that Ning'er rescued a girl who had fallen into the water."
"We have no photograph..."
"No name..."
"No address..."
"Nothing."
The old man's brows knitted tightly.
"Increase the investigation."
"I refuse to let my great-granddaughter grow up without knowing who her mother is."
"We must find out."
His son looked troubled.
"But Father... suppose we do find her."
"Ning'er is already married to the Su family's daughter."
"If Mengmeng learns the truth..."
"Won't it destroy the happy family they've built?"
The old man answered decisively.
"No matter what happens, Mengmeng has the right to know who her biological mother is."
"I will never allow my great-granddaughter to grow up without even knowing her mother's name or where she came from."
"And if Ning'er can't properly handle something as simple as matters of the heart—if all he does is run away from them—then he isn't worthy of being Jiang Xiong's grandson."
His son immediately nodded.
"Yes, Father."
"I'll assign more people to investigate."
The old man continued watching Jiang Ning on the monitor as he chatted happily with Tang Xiachuan.
"The information on that girl is far too limited."
"Guo'er..."
"Try investigating from Mengmeng's side instead."
"Find out how she entered the orphanage."
"Find out which hospital she was born in."
"The hospital's computer records from three years ago should still exist."
"Yes, Father."
"I'll make sure everything is thoroughly investigated."
"Father... Master Jiang... the aircraft is ready for departure."
At that moment, Tang Hecai entered after receiving the airport's notification.
Tang Xiachuan smiled and gestured politely.
"Master Jiang, please."
Jiang Ning smiled back.
"Old Master Tang, you're my elder. You should go first."
Soon afterward, the Dassault Falcon 8X private jet slowly taxied down the runway before taking off toward Cangnan City.
The old man watched the aircraft disappear into the distance through the office window.
"Let's go, Guo'er."
"It's time for us to leave as well."
He couldn't help sighing.
That was his own grandson.
Since Jiang Ning was born, he had only held the child once—on the very day of his birth.
Even then, it had only been for a brief moment before he hardened his heart and handed the baby over to Jiang Tao.
As the memories resurfaced, the old man's eyes gradually became moist.
Two hours later, Jiang Ning and Tang Xiachuan arrived at Cangnan Airport.
The old butler, Zhang Haichen, had already driven there to pick them up.
Together they returned to the Yunding Villa community.
"Well then, Master Jiang," Tang Xiachuan said after they entered the neighborhood.
"This is where we'll part ways."
"Hurry home and reunite with your family."
"I won't keep you any longer."
Jiang Ning nodded with a smile.
"All right."
"Goodbye, Old Master Tang."
With that, he quickened his pace and eagerly headed toward Su Meng's villa.
Only the day before yesterday had he learned that Mengmeng was his biological daughter.
After not seeing her for an entire day, he missed the little girl terribly.
Just as he was about to reach the front door—
Ring! Ring! Ring!
His phone suddenly began to ring.
