Ren was reclining in the main chair of the central tent, his elbows on the armrests and his hands clasped in front of him. The candle on the table flickered slightly, casting long shadows that writhed on the walls like snakes. Outside, the White Lotus camp slept under an overcast sky.
Only one figure moved with absolute stealth.
Suri.
She entered without announcing herself. She never did; Ren had been the one to teach her to move like that. Her shadow seemed to cut the very air, her breathing reduced to an imperceptible minimum.
Ren opened his eyes the moment he felt the change in the room's vibration. Suri's presence was unique: silent, firm, exact.
—"You've returned sooner than I thought," Ren commented without a single variation in tone.
Suri inclined her head slightly and knelt before him. Not out of submission, but out of strategy: Ren knew that every gesture of hers carried a coded message of respect and loyalty. Her expression, as always, was controlled, but there was an almost electric tension in her posture.
—"I found her," she announced in a low, neutral voice.
Ren didn't need her to say her name.
The Blind Bandit.
Toph.
His smile was slight, just a shadow on the edge of his lips… but Suri, who knew him better than anyone, noticed it instantly.
—"Tell me."
Suri inhaled slowly.
—"She is powerful," she began. "Not like a talented child. Not like a prodigy. She is… something different. Her command over the earth doesn't depend on sight, but on a perception that surpasses any master I have ever seen. The earth is an extension of her."
Ren closed his eyes, savoring the information.
It was exactly what he expected.
And even better.
—"Continue."
—"She is not afraid," Suri said. "But she is trapped. Not by chains… by expectations. By her family. By a gilded cage that calls her fragile when she is the opposite."
Ren rested his chin on his interlaced fingers.
—"Does she know who you are?"
Suri shook her head.
—"She only knows I am a messenger. I spoke with her backstage. I mentioned the word 'freedom.' The reaction was clear."
Ren opened his eyes.
—"Pain," he said, as if reciting a natural law.
—"And desire," Suri added. "A desire so deep it seemed to burn her from the inside."
Ren let his head fall back, looking at the tent canvas, as if the map of the future were written there.
Toph Beifong.
The blind girl who sees more than anyone.
The most important piece not yet recruited.
Ren knew what someone like her meant.
He knew how she could be molded.
He knew what she could become.
—"She will come to us," he said with absolute certainty.
Suri nodded.
—"She just needs a reason to run."
Ren finally smiled.
A slow, dangerous, perfect smile.
—"And I will give her an entire world to run to."
Suri lowered her head slightly.
—"Do you wish me to maintain the watch tonight?"
—"Yes. But without intervening," Ren ordered. "She must feel that the change is born within her, not that we imposed it from the outside."
Suri was silent for a moment.
—"Ren… she could become a weapon."
Ren tilted his head, analyzing the phrase.
—"No, Suri." His voice was soft, almost affectionate. "She will be much more than a weapon. She will be a symbol. An earthquake with a will of its own… that will bow to whoever gives it freedom."
His gaze sharpened.
—"A girl who grew up without the power to choose… always gives herself completely to the first person who offers her a real path."
Suri understood.
Ren wasn't just planning to recruit Toph.
He was planning to form a bond.
A deep bond.
Unbreakable.
Dangerously emotional.
Toph would be his disciple.
His weapon.
His earthbending legacy.
Perhaps even… something more.
—"Prepare yourself, Suri," Ren continued. "Soon we will go for her. And when I bring her to our side…"
His smile turned icy.
—"The Earth Kingdom will kneel without needing fire."
Suri felt a shiver run down her spine.
Ren had already seen the future.
And the earth, literally, was ready to tremble.
Gaoling awoke wrapped in a golden glow as the White Lotus caravan entered the main road. The inhabitants stopped to watch: merchants with sacks of rice on their shoulders, children chasing badger-moles, women washing fabrics in buckets of fresh water. Each one felt the same shiver.
Something about this group was different.
The somber colors, the imposing presence, the lotus emblem on every banner… but above all, him.
Ren walked at the front, steps calm, hands behind his back, observing the city as if it already belonged to him. Azula was on his right, impeccable and proud; Suki on his left, serene but attentive to every vibration. Behind them, the other members of the team formed a small, silent squad:
—Suri, so stealthy she seemed to erase the air around her.
—Keiko, with a martial posture that commanded respect.
—Mai, expressionless but dangerous as a hidden knife.
—Ty Lee, smiling, but with a new light in her eyes since her last conversation with Ren.
—Tier Harribel, tall, calm, mysterious, covered by a white cloak that couldn't hide her powerful presence.
The citizens didn't know who they were, but they knew they were important.
That they were dangerous.
Ren smiled slightly.
Everything was going exactly as he wanted.
The news traveled faster than the wind. By the time they reached the city center, a man in fine clothes with an attendant with the stiff posture of a butler was already waiting for them in the main square.
—"Master Ren," the man said with a slight bow. "I am Lao Shin, representative of the Beifong clan in external affairs. My lord and his lady have heard of your… reputation in the Earth Kingdom. They have requested your presence in their home for a dinner this very night."
Azula raised an eyebrow.
Mai rolled her eyes slightly.
Ty Lee murmured "Wow!" without thinking.
Suki remained neutral, though her pulse quickened.
Tier Harribel watched the spokesman with clinical interest.
Suri disappeared into the shadows with a gesture.
Ren took a couple of steps forward.
His voice, soft and measured, seemed to caress the air.
—"Convey to the Beifong family my gratitude. I accept their invitation. My group will be ready to attend tonight."
Lao Shin smiled with evident relief.
—"It will be an honor for our masters to receive you. A carriage will call for you at dusk."
When the emissary left, Suki approached Ren.
—"Do you think they suspect anything?" she asked in a low voice.
Ren shook his head calmly.
—"No. To them, we are a political phenomenon, not a threat. And they want to understand us… even control us." His smile grew, slightly. "That makes them vulnerable."
Azula intervened, crossing her arms.
—"And what do you plan to do with that vulnerability?"
Ren looked toward the Beifong mansion, visible in the distance like a white jewel embedded in the hill.
—"I will use it," he replied. "In its proper measure."
The carriage arrived as promised, pulled by two enormous, gleaming earth-mules under the light of dusk. The wheels crunched softly on the cobblestone road. The air smelled of damp stone and plum leaves.
The Beifong family didn't skimp on elegance.
Ren boarded first. Azula followed without waiting for an invitation. Suki settled in beside him. Harribel occupied a corner in silence, like a living statue. Ty Lee practiced deep breathing to keep from bursting with nerves. Mai stared out the window as if she wanted to stab it. Keiko adjusted her gloves. Suri didn't show herself… but Ren knew she was with them, hidden in some angle of the carriage, invisible to outside eyes.
The journey was quiet.
Too quiet.
Ren noticed it before anyone else:
The vibrations of the floor were perfect, too perfect.
Guards trained not to startle their blind mistress.
Measured steps.
Contained breathing.
The Beifong house was a world of meticulously cared-for silences.
When they arrived, the main door opened as if the mansion were receiving them with a sigh.
The head butler, a middle-aged man with kind eyes, led them to the great hall. The polished floor reflected the light of the oil lamps. The columns were carved with lotus flowers and mountains.
The Beifongs were already waiting for them:
—Lord Lao Beifong: imposing posture, calculated expression.
—Lady Poppy: elegant, nervous, with a soft smile.
And right behind them…
A small girl, tiny, in an impeccable green dress…
White eyes.
Dark hair tied up.
Toph.
She showed no emotion when Ren entered.
She didn't open her mouth.
She didn't bow.
She didn't lower her head.
She just pressed her bare foot to the floor and felt.
Ren knew the exact instant she perceived it.
The slight raising of her eyebrow.
The almost invisible micro-gesture at the corner of her mouth.
She knew someone powerful had entered her house.
More powerful than any earthbender she had ever felt before.
More dangerous.
More… interesting.
Ren inclined his head slightly toward her.
—"An honor to meet you," he said in a soft voice. "Thank you for having us."
Lao Beifong smiled, pleased.
—"The honor is ours, Master Ren. Please… come in. Dinner is ready."
As they advanced toward the dining room, Toph kept her expression neutral. But Ren felt it, like a hidden current beneath the surface.
She had also noticed it.
The presence of Suri.
Perfectly still. Perfect.
Watching her from some point in the mansion.
Toph frowned slightly.
Ren smiled to himself.
The first piece had already trembled.
And the night was just beginning.
