Chapter 24 - The Watcher’s Truth

The trembling beneath the street didn't stop.

It wasn't violent.

It wasn't loud.

But it was alive.

Each pulse came slowly… like the heartbeat of something enormous sleeping deep under the city.

And somehow—

I knew it was listening.

Rain continued falling in thin silver lines from the dark sky. Broken glass glittered across the road like scattered stars. Hunters stood frozen, unsure if they should attack again or wait for orders.

And all of us…

We were staring at the man who had just stepped out of the shadows.

The one they called Director.

He stood calmly beneath a flickering streetlight.

Tall.

Still.

Unbothered by the chaos around him.

His coat swayed slightly in the wind as if the world itself was breathing around him.

But his eyes…

His eyes were locked directly on me.

"The Bronze Guardian," he said again, his voice quiet but firm.

Like someone confirming a long-awaited result.

Seo-yeon stepped slightly in front of me.

"Okay, first of all," she said sharply, "stop calling him that like it's normal."

She pointed at him.

"Second, who exactly are you supposed to be?"

The Director studied her.

Then something strange happened.

He smiled.

Not mockingly.

Not cruelly.

Just… amused.

"You must be Seo-yeon."

She froze.

"…How do you know my name?"

"Because," he said calmly, "your grandmother told me about you."

The world suddenly went silent.

Even the hunters looked surprised.

Seo-yeon's expression changed instantly.

Shock.

Confusion.

Suspicion.

"…You knew my grandmother?"

The crimson-ring girl stiffened beside us.

Her red ring flickered faintly.

She looked at the Director like she had just seen a ghost.

"…No."

She whispered.

"That's impossible."

The Director turned his gaze toward her.

And for the first time—

His expression changed.

Recognition.

"Well," he said slowly, "this is unexpected."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're still alive."

Tae-jun leaned toward me.

"…Am I the only one who feels like everyone here knows each other except us?"

I didn't answer.

Because something about the Director's voice was bothering me.

Something familiar.

Like hearing a song you almost remember.

The crimson-ring girl stepped forward slowly.

Rain rolled down her face as she stared at him.

"…Your name."

She demanded.

The Director adjusted his glasses.

Then answered calmly.

"Director Kang."

Nothing happened.

No dramatic reaction.

Just silence.

Then the crimson-ring girl whispered something under her breath.

A name.

A different one.

"…Kang Hyun-soo."

Director Kang froze.

Just for half a second.

But I saw it.

Seo-yeon noticed it too.

"Oh."

She pointed dramatically.

"That got a reaction."

Tae-jun nodded.

"Yep. Definitely a reaction."

Director Kang sighed quietly.

"…I was hoping that name had been forgotten."

The crimson-ring girl's voice trembled slightly.

"You died."

"Clearly not."

"But you were one of the Seven."

That sentence hit like thunder.

Everyone froze.

Even the hunters looked confused now.

Dae-hyun's eyes sharpened.

"…Seven what?"

The crimson-ring girl didn't look away from the Director.

Her voice was tight.

"The Seven Guardians."

My heart skipped.

My ring burned faintly.

Director Kang looked at me again.

Then nodded slowly.

"She's correct."

Seo-yeon blinked repeatedly.

"Wait."

She raised both hands.

"Hold on."

She pointed between us.

"You're saying… he's one of the original ring holders?"

Director Kang gave a small shrug.

"I was."

My brain struggled to process that.

"…Was?"

The Director looked down at his empty hand.

"Some of us gave up our rings."

Tae-jun frowned.

"Why would anyone do that?"

Director Kang looked toward the dark sky.

"Because power has consequences."

The ground trembled again.

Stronger.

Everyone felt it.

Even the hunters shifted uneasily.

Seo-yeon whispered,

"…That thing underground is getting closer."

The crimson-ring girl nodded grimly.

"Yes."

Director Kang turned toward her again.

"You should not have used the Crimson Ring."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You don't get to give orders anymore."

Director Kang didn't react to the hostility.

He simply said:

"You've accelerated the awakening."

Cold silence fell.

My chest tightened.

"…What awakening?"

The Director looked directly at me.

And said the words carefully.

"The one you started."

The rain suddenly felt colder.

"I didn't start anything."

"You did."

The bronze ring burned hotter.

Like it was reacting to his voice.

Director Kang took a few steps closer.

The hunters didn't stop him.

"You were the one who gave the final command."

Fragments flashed through my mind again.

The stone gate.

The argument.

The shouting.

And my past self standing in the center of the chamber.

Raising the bronze ring.

I clenched my fists.

"…What command?"

Director Kang studied my face carefully.

Then said softly:

"Break the rings."

Everyone went silent.

Seo-yeon blinked.

"…What?"

Dae-hyun frowned deeply.

"Why would we break them?"

The Director answered calmly.

"Because the rings were never meant to survive."

The words felt wrong.

Deeply wrong.

The crimson-ring girl shook her head.

"No."

Director Kang turned toward her.

"You know it's true."

Her voice rose.

"You told us the rings were the only way to keep the Gate sealed!"

"Yes."

"Then why would we destroy them?!"

Director Kang looked at all of us slowly.

Then said something that made my blood run cold.

"Because the rings are also the only way to open it."

Lightning flashed across the sky.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…Well that's bad."

But Director Kang wasn't finished.

"The King Beyond the Gate cannot break the seal from the inside."

He explained.

"But if the rings gather…"

He looked at my hand.

"…the lock begins to weaken."

The bronze ring pulsed again.

As if confirming his words.

Seo-yeon shook her head slowly.

"Okay wait wait wait."

She pointed around the group.

"So if we all gather…"

"…we basically open the prison?"

Director Kang nodded.

"Yes."

The crimson-ring girl clenched her fists.

"That's why we divided them!"

Director Kang's eyes darkened.

"And that decision created the problem we face now."

Dae-hyun stepped forward.

"What problem?"

The Director turned slowly toward the hunters behind him.

"Because not everyone agreed with the decision."

The hunter leader smirked slightly.

"Correct."

Director Kang continued calmly.

"There were always those who believed the King was right."

My stomach twisted.

"…You mean…"

Director Kang nodded.

"The hunters."

Seo-yeon groaned loudly.

"Oh great."

She pointed at them.

"So you're basically an ancient cult."

The hunter leader bowed slightly.

"We prefer the term loyalists."

Tae-jun muttered,

"Yeah that's definitely a cult."

But something still didn't make sense.

I looked at Director Kang.

"If the rings should be destroyed…"

I said slowly.

"…why didn't we do it?"

The Director's eyes darkened.

"Because we couldn't."

My breath caught.

"…Why?"

Director Kang answered quietly.

"Because the rings are alive."

The street went silent again.

The crimson-ring girl nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Seo-yeon stared at her.

"…Alive?"

The girl looked at her crimson ring.

"They choose their guardians."

My bronze ring pulsed again.

Almost… proudly.

Director Kang continued.

"And they refuse to die."

A sudden loud CRACK echoed beneath the street.

Everyone froze.

The ground trembled violently this time.

Not a pulse.

A shift.

Car alarms started screaming in the distance.

Seo-yeon grabbed my arm.

"Ji-hoon…"

The crimson-ring girl whispered in horror.

"…It's too early."

Director Kang looked toward the road beneath us.

His calm expression finally cracked.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Then the asphalt split.

Just a thin crack.

Running across the street like a scar.

From deep below…

A faint red glow appeared.

Not from any ring.

Something older.

Darker.

And suddenly…

A voice echoed in my mind.

Not a memory.

Not a vision.

A voice.

Deep.

Ancient.

Cold.

"…Bronze Guardian."

My heart stopped.

No one else reacted.

They couldn't hear it.

The voice spoke again.

"…You finally returned."

My legs felt weak.

"…No."

Seo-yeon looked at me.

"Ji-hoon?"

The voice continued.

Slow.

Patient.

"Open the Gate."

I stumbled backward.

My ring burning hotter than ever.

"Ji-hoon what's wrong?!" Seo-yeon shouted.

But I couldn't answer.

Because the voice said something else.

Something that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"You promised you would."

The street trembled again.

And somewhere deep beneath the earth…

Something enormous began to wake up.
