Chapter 45 - The Truth That Was Hidden From Me

The wind didn't stop.

It moved through the empty street like it was searching for something that wasn't there anymore.

Or maybe—

Someone.

No one spoke after the man's words.

"You're not choosing between her and the world… you're choosing what kind of person you become."

That line kept repeating in my head.

Over and over.

Because for the first time—

It didn't feel like a warning.

It felt like something I had already decided.

And that thought…

That was what scared me.

Tae-jun finally broke the silence.

"…Okay."

"I don't like quiet Ji-hoon."

"Every time he gets like this, something big happens."

Hae-in sighed.

"He's thinking."

"Yeah," Tae-jun muttered.

"That's the problem."

Seo-yeon didn't laugh.

She was still looking at me.

Not questioning.

Not doubting.

Just… waiting.

And I realized something in that moment.

She wasn't afraid of what would happen.

She was afraid of why I would choose it.

I looked at the man again.

"…You said this world ended."

He nodded once.

"Yes."

"And this is what remains."

"Yes."

"…Then where are the others?"

He didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Instead—

He stepped aside.

And pointed down the street.

"…Come."

Tae-jun frowned.

"…I really don't like when mysterious people say that."

"Same," Hae-in added.

But we followed anyway.

Because at this point—

There was no reason not to.

We walked in silence.

The empty city stretched around us.

Buildings passed by.

Shops.

Cafés.

Apartments.

All untouched.

All silent.

Like time had stopped…

But not decayed.

And that made it worse.

Because it didn't feel like destruction.

It felt like… removal.

After a few minutes—

The man stopped.

In front of a building.

A hospital.

The sign above the entrance flickered faintly.

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Oh no."

"Hospital means bad news."

"Why is it always hospitals?"

Hae-in crossed her arms.

"Because people don't go there for good reasons."

"Fair."

The doors were already open.

No resistance.

No lock.

Just…

Waiting.

The man stepped inside.

We followed.

The moment we entered—

The air changed.

Colder.

Heavier.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The hallway stretched ahead, lit by dim white lights. The floor was clean. The walls were untouched.

But the silence here…

It was different from outside.

This silence had weight.

Like something had happened here.

Something that hadn't left.

Ara spoke first.

"…There are no signs of struggle."

Director Kang nodded.

"No damage."

"No collapse."

Hae-in frowned.

"…Then what happened to everyone?"

The man stopped walking.

Then—

He turned.

And looked at me.

"…You happened."

My chest tightened again.

"…That's not an explanation."

"It is," he said calmly.

"You just don't want it to be."

Frustration rose again.

"Then show me."

Silence.

Then—

"…Alright."

He turned again.

And pushed open one of the doors.

A patient room.

Simple.

Clean.

Normal.

Except—

There was someone inside.

Lying on the bed.

Still.

Not moving.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…Please don't tell me—"

But he didn't finish.

Because we all saw it.

Clearly.

It was me.

The room went completely silent.

Not heavy.

Not tense.

Just—

Empty.

Because none of us knew how to react.

Hae-in was the first to speak.

"…That's not possible."

Ara stepped forward slowly.

"…It's not a projection."

Director Kang frowned.

"…Vital signs?"

He moved closer.

Checked the monitor.

"…Flat."

Seo-yeon's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"…He's dead."

I didn't move.

I couldn't.

Because I was staring at myself.

At my own body.

Still.

Cold.

Lifeless.

And yet—

I was standing here.

Alive.

Breathing.

Thinking.

"…Explain."

My voice didn't sound like mine.

The man stood beside me.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"…This is what happens."

"When you choose."

"…Choose what?" I asked.

"You."

The word hit harder than anything else.

Tae-jun stepped forward.

"…Hold on."

"So in this version…"

He pointed at the bed.

"…he dies?"

"Yes."

"And she lives?"

The man nodded.

"Yes."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…That's not what we expected."

"No," the man said quietly.

"It never is."

Seo-yeon didn't move.

Didn't speak.

She just stood there.

Looking at the body.

Then at me.

Then back again.

"…You die?"

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't understand.

Not fully.

"Why?" Hae-in asked.

The man looked at her.

"…Because he chose without fear."

Silence.

That sentence changed everything.

Ara's voice dropped.

"…Explain that."

The man nodded slightly.

"…Every cycle before this…"

He looked at me.

"…you chose her out of fear."

"Fear of losing her."

"Fear of being alone."

"Fear of regret."

His voice remained calm.

"But this time…"

He gestured toward the body.

"…you chose her without fear."

Tae-jun frowned.

"…That sounds like a good thing."

"It is," the man said.

"But it comes with a cost."

"Everything comes with a cost," Hae-in muttered.

"Yes," he said.

"But this one is different."

I stepped closer to the bed.

Closer to myself.

"…So this is the 'better' choice?"

"No," the man said.

"There is no better choice."

"Only different outcomes."

I clenched my jaw.

"…Then what changes?"

He looked at me.

"…You do."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Because suddenly—

Everything made sense.

Not the situation.

Not the system.

But the pattern.

Every time—

It wasn't about the result.

It was about me.

What I chose.

Why I chose it.

Who I became because of it.

Seo-yeon finally spoke.

Her voice trembling slightly.

"…Then why does the world end?"

The man looked at her.

"…Because you survive."

That answer hit again.

Hard.

"But that doesn't make sense," she said.

"If he dies to save me… why does everything else disappear?"

The man didn't hesitate this time.

"…Because you can't live with it."

Silence.

Complete.

Devastating.

Seo-yeon stepped back.

"…What?"

The man continued.

"…Every time he chooses you…"

"…you carry the weight of that choice."

"…And eventually…"

He paused.

"…you break."

Hae-in whispered,

"…And when she breaks…"

Ara finished quietly,

"…the system collapses."

Director Kang nodded slowly.

"The anchor fails."

The realization hit all of us at once.

It wasn't Ji-hoon choosing Seo-yeon that destroyed everything.

It was—

What happened after.

Seo-yeon's voice shook.

"…So no matter what…"

"…everything ends because of me?"

"No," I said immediately.

She looked at me.

"…Then what?"

I stepped closer.

"…It ends because we don't understand."

The man nodded slightly.

"…Now you're getting closer."

Tae-jun ran a hand through his hair.

"…This is too much."

"So if he saves her—"

He pointed at the bed.

"He dies."

He pointed at Seo-yeon.

"She lives."

Then gestured around.

"And the world still ends."

He paused.

"…So what's the right move here?"

Silence.

Because there wasn't one.

I looked at my own body again.

Then at Seo-yeon.

Then at the man.

"…You said this can be avoided."

"Yes."

"…How?"

He looked at me.

"…You stop making it about saving."

That answer felt different.

Important.

"…Then what is it about?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…Letting go."

The words landed softly.

But they carried weight.

Seo-yeon shook her head.

"…Letting go of what?"

He looked at both of us.

"…The need to be the reason."

Silence.

Because that—

That was something we hadn't considered.

I felt it then.

For the first time.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Something else.

Clarity.

A small piece of it.

Enough to understand one thing—

We had been looking at this wrong.

The entire time.

I looked at Seo-yeon.

"…It's not about choosing you."

She didn't respond.

"…It's about not making you the reason for everything."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"…Ji-hoon—"

"I don't save you because I'm afraid to lose you."

I took a slow breath.

"I save you because you deserve to live."

The difference was small.

But it changed everything.

The man smiled faintly.

"…Now you're close."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Close to what?"

The man looked at the door.

"…The real decision."

The lights in the room flickered.

The air shifted.

The hospital walls began to blur.

Not breaking.

Not collapsing.

Just…

Fading.

The world around us started dissolving.

Piece by piece.

Hae-in stepped back.

"…Here we go again."

Ara nodded.

"The transition is starting."

Director Kang looked at me.

"…Ji-hoon."

I didn't look away from Seo-yeon.

"…Yeah."

"…This is it."

I nodded.

"…I know."

The man stepped back into the fading light.

"…Remember."

"…This time…"

His voice echoed softly.

"…don't choose out of fear."

Everything disappeared.

The hospital.

The city.

The body.

The silence.

All of it—

Gone.

And then—

We were somewhere else.

Again.

But this time—

It didn't feel like a trap.

It felt like the beginning of something final.

I looked at Seo-yeon.

She looked at me.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just understanding.

And for the first time—

I knew.

The next choice…

Wouldn't be about saving anyone.

It would be about letting something go.

And that…

Was going to be the hardest part.
