Chapter 58 - Echoes That Refuse to Fade

( PH2)

Morning....

The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but astra city still wore the storm like a scar. Water clung to every railing, every window, every abandoned rooftop. The streets reflected pale sunlight beneath layers of grey clouds, making the city look as though it had forgotten what morning was supposed to feel like.

Anie opened her eyes she didn't remember falling asleep.her room was silent.the only sound was the slow ticking of the wall clock.she stared at the ceiling her mind refused to move on.

"You don't stop awareness."

"You survive it."

mysterious woman's voice echoed again.again, again anie slowly sat up.

Her body felt heavy not tire heavy.

as though every answer she had received the previous night had become another weight pressing against her chest.she looked toward the desk.samantha's diary rested exactly where she had left it closed.

untouched for a long moment, she simply looked at it.

"...I finally understand why you were scared..."

Her whisper disappeared into the empty room.she reached for the diary but stopped halfway not yet.

she wasn't ready instead, she stood, changed her clothes, and quietly left the apartment.

Outside.....

Everything looked...

normal yet nothing felt normal anymore.the woman had been right once awareness began changing...

The world itself felt different anie walked without any destination.

city breathed around her then something happened.at a busy pedestrian crossing, everyone suddenly stopped.not because the signal changed.for less than a heartbeat everything hesitated.

a cyclist a fluttering newspaper steam rising from a street vendor's cart.even a flock of pigeons.everything...paused,

then resumed,no one reacted,no one except Anie.stopped walking immediately.

"..."

her heartbeat quickened,

"Did anyone else..."

nobody did people continued talking.

laughing.crossing the road as though nothing had happened.anie slowly looked around.

"...It wasn't my imagination."

pressure built behind her eyes.not painful just...present she continued walking.

several streets later a child suddenly ran into the road chasing a red balloon.

before anie consciously understood what was happening her chest tightened sharply. a strange pressure spread through her body move.

the thought wasn't hers instinctively, she grabbed the child by the arm and pulled him backward.a delivery truck sped past exactly where he had been standing.its horn echoed through the street the child's mother rushed forward.

"Oh my God! Thank you!"

she hugged her son tightly the boy looked confused.

"I'm sorry..."

Anie could only nod.she wasn't looking at them she was staring at the road.

"...I knew..."

she hadn't guessed, she had known.

seconds before it happened exactly as the woman had described.spatial awareness the realization didn't comfort her.it frightened her.

By afternoon...

hospital lobby smelled faintly of disinfectant and coffee.doctors moved quickly between departments nurses spoke softly into headsets.life and death continued their endless conversation.anie entered the elevator.

fourth floor.

doors opened, ICU corridor looked almost unchanged.bright lights white walls.quiet footsteps hope wrapped in silence.mira was sitting in the same chair.this time she noticed Anie immediately,

"You came."... she noded..

"How is he?"..

"No change." mira sighed,

answer hurt more than anie expected.

they stood together in silence looking through the glass.eli lay exactly as before motionless.Machines quietly confirmed he was still alive.anie rested one hand against the cold glass.

"...Wake up."

"You've been different."Mira glanced sideways.

"You disappear, you don't explain anything.,you look like you're carrying something alone."

"You know...,.you don't always have to pretend you're okay."

anie's fingers tightened for one impossible moment she wanted to tell her everything.called, fractures, hunters,

the mysterious woman.everything

her lips parted.

"...Mira..." she remembered another sentence.

"The fewer people who know... the longer they stay alive."

words froze inside her throat she looked away.

"...I'm just tired."

Mira studied her face she knew that wasn't the truth.but she didn't ask again.

Hours later

Anie left the hospital alone.evening sky had darkened once more clouds gathered over,as she walked down the main corridor a sharp pressure exploded inside her head.

"...!"

she stopped hallway around her blurred.not visually, emotionally something invisible spread through the corridor.fear, hope, grief, relief, desperation .thousands ...

no...

hundreds of emotions layered left behind by everyone who had walked these halls.parents waiting for children.

children waiting for parents.doctors delivering impossible news.last conversations.first cries, final goodbyes anie staggered.

"...What..."

she couldn't see memories, she could...feel them every lingering emotion clinging to the walls like invisible echoes.her breathing became uneven.nurse passing nearby looked at her.

"Miss? Are you alright?"

pressure disappeared instantly everything returned to normal.

"...Yes..."lie..."I'm fine." wasn't

Outside..

the first raindrop landed on the pavement.then another within seconds

rain covered the city once more.anie stood beneath the hospital entrance without opening her umbrella.she watched the abandoned district in the distance.

old building the place where everything had changed.where questions had become answers.and where answers had become even greater questions she remembered the woman's final silence.

"...Who are you...?"

rain gave no reply for several long moments anie stood perfectly still.

Then,

she took one slow step forward.

not toward home toward the old district

toward the place she had promised herself she wouldn't return to.

this time,

no one had called her no mysterious message waited on her phone.no voice guided her.this decision belonged to her alone.for the first time since Samantha's death...

anie wasn't running from the unknown.

she was choosing to walk toward it....
