The palace was eerily quiet.
The morning sun streamed through the grand windows, illuminating marble floors and the still-scented smoke of burnt incense from the previous night's chaos.
Zhen Luo sat at the throne, shoulders straight, fingers lightly tapping on the polished wood. Around him, ministers whispered and shuffled papers nervously.
The Emperor leaned back, silently observing.
Han Jian stood behind Zhen Luo, expression calm, cloak blending into the shadow.
The Queen in Prison
Far away, in the northern wing's cold stone cell, the Queen leaned against the wall.
Her fingers drummed softly against the bars.
A small shadow moved at her feet.
"You did well today," the aide whispered.
The Queen smiled faintly. "No, it was not today. It is tomorrow that counts."
Her eyes gleamed. Even behind iron bars, she radiated control.
"Release the messages," she instructed quietly. "Let the villages know I am alive. Let them fear me."
The aide nodded and slipped into the shadows.
Even imprisoned, the Queen's mind was a blade, sharp and dangerous.
Public Rumors
In the streets, whispers spread like wildfire.
"Did the Crown Prince really survive a coup?"
"Did he kill anyone?"
"Why isn't the Queen dead?"
The people were afraid. Excited. Confused.
Zhen Luo's calculated cruelty was now legendary. The Black Flag whispers followed him everywhere.
Han Jian leaned casually against a balcony, watching the crowd below.
"They think they can predict him," he said quietly.
Zhen Luo's eyes flicked toward him. "Let them. I prefer surprises."
Han Jian smirked. "I've been surprised by you plenty already."
Zhen Luo's lips curved faintly, almost a smile.
Testing Han Jian
The Emperor summoned Han Jian to the inner chambers.
"You've saved the palace and protected my son," he said slowly. "But can I trust you completely?"
Han Jian tilted his head. "Trust is earned, Your Majesty."
"Then prove it."
The Emperor handed him a sealed letter. "This contains names of traitors who are still hidden. Find them. Eliminate them."
Han Jian's eyes glinted. "And if I fail?"
"You fail," the Emperor said, "and Zhen Luo becomes a tyrant you cannot stop."
Han Jian bowed slightly. "Then I will not fail."
Consolidating Power
Zhen Luo walked through the hallways, guards on either side, ministers bowing instinctively.
Each step was a statement.
He passed Li Shuran, who had been forced to attend a ceremony to restore appearances.
"Your Highness," she whispered.
Zhen Luo's gaze met hers. "Do not overstep."
Her lips pressed together. Noted, she thought.
The palace was now his chessboard, every person a piece he could move—or remove.
Han Jian followed silently, shadow and protector all in one.
Shadows Stir
In the northern wing, the Queen's aide returned with reports.
"Some of Bai Zehan's men have gone missing," the Queen said softly. "And Luo Xian has been seen moving near the markets."
She tapped her fingers against the bars. "They will be useful. Or disposable."
A faint laugh escaped her lips. "Let the prince burn the palace. Let him think he is winning. Let him discover, too late, that I am still alive."
The Calm
That night, Zhen Luo and Han Jian stood on the highest roof of the palace.
The city stretched below, lights twinkling, calm yet restless.
"Tomorrow will bring more challenges," Han Jian said lightly.
Zhen Luo's eyes glinted. "Let it come."
Han Jian smirked. "I'm always ready for fire."
Zhen Luo's hand brushed against his cloak. "Stay close."
"Always," Han Jian replied.
Below, the city slept, unaware that a storm was already forming.
And above, two shadows watched, planning moves that would shake the palace to its core.
