Chapter 97 - Chapter 97

The shadows on the sand began to stretch, turning from sharp black lines into long, violet ribbons as the sun dipped toward the horizon. Kei remained perched on her driftwood throne, her mind drifting with the tide.

She had spent the last hour simply existing, letting the sound of the crashing waves drown out the lingering "what-ifs" that usually occupied her brain.

Back at the house, the heavy medical book finally clicked shut with a muffled

thud

Fay rubbed her eyes, the technical diagrams of anatomy and pathology still dancing behind her eyelids. She stretched her arms over her head, her joints popping in the quiet room. Her mind was exhausted, but her heart felt a sudden, strange hollowness.

The house was too still. The teasing voice and the warm presence that usually filled the air were missing.

She stood up, smoothed out her clothes and followed the scent of salt air through the open back door.

Fay spotted her almost immediately a lone silhouette against the shimmering orange of the sea. Kei looked small from a distance, her hair whipping around her face in the coastal breeze. Fay walked down the dunes, her footsteps silent on the soft sand, until she was standing just a few feet behind the girl on the sand.

"You're going to catch a cold if you stay out here much longer," Fay said softly.

Kei look back. Her eyes lit up the moment they landed on Fay, a reaction so instinctive it made Fay's heart skip a beat.

"Oh you're done reading?" Kei said.

"I'm never done,"

Fay said, stepping closer.

"But I think my brain has reached its capacity for today."

She sat down on the sand next to Kei, leaving just enough space for the wind to pass between them. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. They simply watched the sun sink lower, turning the ocean into a sheet of liquid gold.

"I saw you earlier,"

Kei admitted suddenly, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"I walked by your room. You looked… really focused. I didn't want to bother you."

Fay turned her head.

"You didn't have to stay away. I wouldn't have minded."

Kei shook her head, a soft smile playing on her lips.

"No, you looked so beautiful like that. Intelligent. Like you were in your own world. I just wanted to admire it for a second and let you have your space."

Fay felt something, though she hoped the sunset would hide that something. To be called beautiful was one thing, but to be admired for her mind, for her dedication to her craft… it felt different. It felt real.

Kei reached down, tracing a pattern in the sand with her toe.

"The sea is relaxing, isn't it? It makes everything else feel small."

"It does,"

Fay agreed.

She hesitated for a second, then shifted slightly, closing the gap between them until their shoulders touched. It was a small gesture, but in the quiet of the evening, it felt as loud as a shout.

Kei didn't say anything, but she leaned into the touch, resting her head lightly on Fay's shoulder. The ponytail Fay had tied earlier was a bit messy now, a few loose strands tickling Kei's forehead, but neither of them cared.

"Fay?"

"Hmm?"

"Thanks for cooking with me earlier. And for the band-aid."

Fay looked out at the last sliver of the sun as it vanished beneath the waves.

"Thanks for also the cooking with me and.....for the hug. Even if you said it didn't have a meaning."

Kei chuckled, a low, warm sound.

"I might have lied about the meaning part."

Fay didn't pull away. Instead, she let out a long, contented sigh, watching the first stars begin to twinkle in the darkening sky.

"I know, Kei. I know."
