"It's true that the police are in our pockets for now," My voice cut through the heavy, humid air of the street, "but we shouldn't push it, especially not in a city like San Marcos where we haven't truly stamped our feet yet."
I looked at Lorenzo, then at Domino, making sure they understood the gravity of the ticking clock above our heads. "The people in this city are terrified, and they're currently pressuring the SMPD to find out why their streets have turned into a war zone all of a sudden.
"The chiefs can only look the other way for so long before they have to save their own skins. If the police catch us here, they'll have no choice but to arrest us to keep up appearances, and once we're in the hands of the feds, our cozy relationship with the local precinct won't matter a damn bit."
Domino nodded, his jaw tight as he glanced toward the intersection where the first line of patrol cars would eventually appear.
