Chapter 59 - Chapter 59 Racing Ships

The shock from the weapon system upgrade hadn't fully subsided when Roger immediately moved on to the next item.

"Hanson! Call all the sail handlers over!"

"Yes, Captain!"

Hanson had now completely become Roger's star spokesperson in the sail handling team, also serving as the president of his staunch fan club.

"Everyone, come over! Don't just stand there gawking!"

He bellowed, gathering all the sailors responsible for handling the sails beneath the main mast.

Roger cleared his throat, pointing at the complex sail rigging system, which had been reconfigured like a spiderweb.

Pirate Remedial Class, Lesson Two, was now in session.

"Brothers, when you used to sail, didn't you have a pain point?"

"That is, with a tailwind, you'd fly, but against the wind, you'd be like you hadn't eaten, taking two steps forward and one step back?"

An old sailor scratched his head in an honest manner.

"Yes, Captain, isn't it always like that?"

"If the Sea God doesn't favor us, there's nothing anyone can do."

Another sailor chimed in.

"Sailing against the wind? Isn't that going against the Sea God? You'll incur divine wrath!"

"Well said!"

Roger snapped his fingers, like a persuasive pyramid scheme leader.

"So, from today onwards, we're going to learn how to reason with the Sea God."

Reason with him?

With what?

With our newly upgraded 12-pound rifled cannons?

The sailors shivered in fright, feeling that the Captain's topic today was exceptionally dangerous.

Roger picked up a long pole and pointed at the several new, seemingly redundant yardarms on either side of the main sail.

"See these new additions?"

"From now on, when the wind is right, we'll hoist two extra sails on either side of the main sail!"

Roger drew a sketch on the deck with charcoal, showing the main sail with two small wings added.

"These are called studding sails! Once installed, the sail area instantly increases by one-third!"

"With a tailwind, our speed will be so fast that all other ships will only be able to eat our dust!"

Studding sails?

What in the world are those?

Adding sails on both sides of a sail?

The pirates exchanged glances; they had never even heard of such a term.

Could the mast handle it?

Wouldn't the ship tear itself apart while sailing?

"I know what you're thinking, afraid the ship will fall apart, right?"

Roger saw through their doubts at a glance.

"Don't worry, our reinforced keel and new mast, let alone adding two studding sails, even if you guys hung up there and swung, it would be more than enough!"

"Not only that!"

Roger then pointed to the newly added, longitudinally arranged triangular sails between the masthead and the bowsprit.

"These are called gaff sails!"

"Their purpose is to provide us with lateral thrust when sailing against the wind!"

"In layman's terms, they let us run diagonally!"

"Combined with the 'zigzag' sailing method I'm about to teach you, we can maintain a considerable speed even against the wind!"

"From now on, wind direction will no longer be a limitation for us!"

"It's just an option!"

"I want to turn the explorer into a ghost ship that can go wherever it wants, regardless of the wind direction!"

Disregarding wind direction?

To them, this sounded even more fantastical than hitting a target five hundred meters away with a single cannon shot!

If they could truly achieve that, wouldn't the explorer really become a god on the sea?

Going wherever they wanted, attacking whoever they pleased?

"Captain! Please teach us!"

"Yes! I feel full of energy!"

In the time that followed, Roger meticulously broke down the knowledge of the [Full Rigging System], bit by bit, stuffing it into the minds of these clumsy pirates.

He taught them how to quickly hoist and furl the studding sails, like giving the ship a pair of wings.

He taught them how to precisely adjust the angle of every sail, and even every rope, according to different wind directions and strengths, utilizing wind energy to its fullest.

He taught them how to perform a perfect "zigzag" serpentine maneuver against the wind by constantly tacking.

This complex sail handling technique was like the difference between a manual tractor and an automatic sports car, compared to their previous crude method of simply hoisting the sails to the top.

The pirates learned until their heads spun, complaining endlessly.
