Chapter 78 - Borrowed Time

Chapter 78

(Borrowed Time)

Silence settled over the underground chamber.

The battle had ended, but the chamber still carried its scars. Ancient ritual circles that had once covered the floor with perfect symmetry now lay broken beneath shattered stone and dried blood. The air was thick with the scent of burnt mana, and fragments of crystal lamps flickered weakly overhead, casting unsteady light upon the countless bodies scattered across the ruins.

The great seal behind the altar remained untouched.

Whatever had happened...

It had been stopped.

Professor Kaien entered first.

His measured footsteps echoed through the chamber, drawing the attention of everyone behind him. Mireya followed close at his side, with Aurelian, Lucien, Nyra and Jorn a few steps behind. None of them spoke. Even Lucien, who rarely allowed silence to linger, found himself without words as his eyes wandered across the devastation.

No ordinary student could have done this.

Then they saw him.

A lone figure sat upon the broken altar.

His academy uniform was torn beyond recognition. Blood had soaked through the fabric around his shoulder and sleeves before drying into dark stains. Ashveil rested quietly across his knees, while small fragments of broken stone surrounded the platform where he sat.

It was Pryan.

Yet the moment Mireya saw his face, something inside her tightened.

He looked exactly the same.

And yet...

He didn't.

The unease came from something she couldn't describe.

Pryan had always carried himself carefully, as though every action demanded thought before movement. Even in battle there had been restraint within him.

The young man before them possessed none of that.

He sat with effortless composure, his posture relaxed despite the destruction surrounding him.

As though nothing in the world could surprise him anymore.

Kaien continued walking until only a few steps separated them.

The others remained behind.

Not because Kaien had ordered them to.

Because instinct told them they should.

For several moments, neither side spoke.

Only the distant sound of water falling somewhere within the ancient tunnels disturbed the silence.

Finally Kaien broke it.

"...Who are you?"

The young man slowly lifted his head.

His eyes settled upon Kaien without the slightest trace of uncertainty.

"I am Dark Pryan."

His voice was calm.

Neither cold nor warm.

Simply certain.

Lucien frowned.

"...Dark Pryan?"

"That is the name I chose."

Mireya immediately stepped forward.

"Where's Pryan?"

"He is here."

"Then let him answer."

"He cannot."

"Why?"

Dark Pryan regarded her quietly.

"Because he no longer wishes to."

"I don't believe you."

"You don't have to."

His answer carried no irritation.

It sounded like someone stating a simple fact.

"He reached his limit."

"He accepted defeat."

"So I continued where he could not."

Mireya shook her head.

"No."

"That's not Pryan."

"No."

Dark Pryan agreed without hesitation.

"It isn't."

Aurelian narrowed his eyes.

"...Then what are you?"

For the first time, Dark Pryan looked away from them.

His gaze drifted across the ruined chamber before returning to the broken seal behind him.

"When a person stands before death..."

"...their deepest desires become clearer than anything else."

He looked back toward them.

"Pryan feared failing again."

"He feared watching people die while lacking the strength to stop it."

"He desired enough power that such failure would never happen again."

Dark Pryan rested a hand lightly against his own chest.

"I was born from that desire."

Silence followed.

Nobody fully understood his words.

Nyra frowned slightly.

"...Born?"

"Yes."

"I am the part of Pryan that no longer accepts weakness."

"The part willing to abandon hesitation."

"The part that believes strength matters above all else."

Lucien folded his arms.

"So..."

"You're saying you're another personality?"

Dark Pryan shook his head.

"No."

"I am Pryan."

Lucien blinked.

"...What?"

"I possess his memories."

"I possess his knowledge."

"I possess his body."

"The only difference..."

Dark Pryan's eyes remained perfectly still.

"...is that I have no intention of repeating his mistakes."

Kaien watched him carefully.

"And what mistakes would those be?"

"Hesitation."

"Doubt."

"Mercy."

Dark Pryan answered each word without pause.

"He carries burdens too large for his strength."

"He believes effort alone will eventually overcome reality."

"It will not."

His voice never rose.

There was no anger.

No hatred.

Only conviction.

"He failed once."

"He nearly failed again."

"There will not be another opportunity."

Mireya clenched her fists.

"You don't know him."

"I know him better than anyone."

"You only know his fears."

Dark Pryan smiled faintly.

"They are inseparable."

The smile disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared.

"He wishes to save everyone."

"So do I."

"The difference..."

"I am willing to become someone else to accomplish it."

Kaien remained silent for a long moment.

Then he asked quietly,

"And Pryan?"

"He is watching."

"He can hear everything."

"But he has surrendered."

"I have not."

Mireya took another step.

"Give him back."

"No."

"You don't get to decide that."

"I already have."

Dark Pryan slowly stood.

Ashveil dissolved into particles of mana before reforming naturally within his hand.

The motion was smooth.

Almost effortless.

"He cannot become what this world requires."

"I can."

A faint current of mana spread quietly through the chamber.

No spell had been cast.

No magic circle appeared.

Yet everyone present felt it instinctively.

The pressure alone made breathing feel heavier.

Kaien's eyes never left him.

"You intend to replace him."

"Yes."

"If the world remembers Pryan..."

Dark Pryan looked briefly at his own bloodstained hands.

"...then it will remember me."

The words settled over the chamber like falling ash.

Nobody misunderstood them.

This wasn't possession.

Nor madness.

It was something far worse.

A person who genuinely believed another version of himself deserved to exist more.

Kaien exhaled softly.

"You believe you're stronger."

"I know I am."

"The body remains the same."

"The mana remains the same."

"The memories remain the same."

Dark Pryan lowered Ashveil until its tip touched the cracked stone beneath his feet.

"The difference..."

"...is that I do not hesitate."

"I will make every decision Pryan could not."

"I will walk every path he fears."

"And I will do whatever is necessary."

No arrogance filled his voice.

Only quiet certainty.

Kaien closed his eyes for a brief moment before opening them once more.

"I cannot allow that."

"I expected as much."

Dark Pryan adjusted his grip on Ashveil.

"I hold no resentment toward you, Professor."

"You protected him."

"You guided him."

"But you are protecting the wrong Pryan."

The underground chamber fell silent once again.

Far above them, faint tremors echoed through the ancient ruins as more people hurried toward the depths below.

Neither Kaien nor Dark Pryan acknowledged them.

This moment belonged only to the two standing before one another.

Dark Pryan slowly raised Ashveil.

For the first time since entering the chamber, the air itself seemed to grow still.

Neither of them moved.

Yet everyone present understood.

The conversation had ended.

The next words would be spoken with swords.
