Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 : The Price of Kindness

Chen Bo didn't return that night.

Or the next.

On third day, Shuan emerged from cave. Cautious. Senses extended.

Cultivators gone. Village quiet.

Too quiet.

Walked through village. People stared. Looked away quickly.

Fear.

Something happened.

Found Chen Bo's house. Door open.

Inside, trashed. Furniture broken. Blood on floor.

Not much. But enough.

They questioned him.

Hard.

Neighbor appeared at door. Old woman. Terrified.

"You're the one they were looking for."

"Where's Chen Bo?"

"They took him. Said he was harboring fugitive. Aiding criminal." Her voice shook. "Beat him. In front of everyone. Then dragged him away."

"Where?"

"Azure Cloud Sect. For judgment."

Judgment.

Execution.

Because of him. Because Chen Bo helped him.

Another debt.

Another person suffering for his choices.

"Leave." Old woman's voice turned cold. "You brought this here. Go. Before they come back."

Turned and left.

Shuan stood in doorway.

Should leave.

Should run.

Chen Bo chose this. Not my responsibility.

But that strange feeling returned. Stronger.

Guilt.

He helped me.

First person who asked nothing in return.

And now...

Sat on Chen Bo's bed. The same bed where he'd recovered. Where kindness had been freely given.

Owe him.

Hate owing people.

But owe him.

Made decision.

Get him back.

Or die trying.

Not out of heroism. Not out of righteousness.

Out of debt. Pure transaction.

Chen Bo gave him three weeks of safety. Food. Healing.

Shuan would repay that debt.

Then they'd be even.

Then he could leave with clear conscience.

Stood.

Started planning.

Azure Cloud Sect.

Research Division compound.

Three days after Shuan's escape.

Elder Yue stood over Elder Feng's body.

Not dead. Yet.

Meridians crippled. Cultivation base shattered. Left alive as example.

"Where did he go?"

Elder Feng coughed blood. Smiled. "Don't know."

"You helped him escape. You gave him forbidden technique scroll. You provided route information."

"Prove it."

Elder Yue's eyes were ice. "Your loyalty is admirable. Misplaced. But admirable."

Crouched beside him.

"Lin Shuan is failed experiment now. Augmented roots destroyed. Grade Eight again. Worthless." Leaned closer. "But you invested four years in him. Hundreds of resources. Sect Master wants compensation."

"Take it from my corpse."

"Oh, we will." Stood. "But first, you'll watch as we bring him back. As we fix what broke. As we complete the Living Weapon project. Using his body. His mind. His soul."

Elder Feng's smile faded.

"Then you'll die. Knowing your 'success story' became exactly what you tried to prevent."

Turned to leave.

"Elder Yue."

Stopped.

Elder Feng's voice weak but clear. "You'll never catch him."

"Why not?"

"Because I didn't create survivor. I created predator." Coughed more blood. "And predators don't get caught. They adapt. Evolve. Become stronger."

"Poetic. But wrong. He's Grade Eight. Broken. Alone."

"For now." Elder Feng closed eyes. "But give him time. He'll surprise you."

"Won't matter. We have three Foundation Establishment hunters tracking him. He has nowhere to go."

"We'll see."

Elder Yue left.

Elder Feng lay alone in cell.

Dying slowly.

Worth it.

Made something interesting.

Something that might actually change things.

Worth it.

Lost consciousness.

For last time.

Shuan, present time.

Meditation. Circulating Qi. Grade Eight roots struggling with even basic cultivation.

Four years ago, this was normal.

Now feels like prison.

But couldn't focus on resentment. Needed plan.

Chen Bo is in sect prison.

Guarded. Warded. Impossible to break into.

Alone.

So don't go alone.

But who'd help?

No allies. No friends. No resources.

Unless...

Remembered something. Conversation with Elder Feng. Year ago.

"Azure Cloud Sect isn't monolith. It's collection of factions. Research Division. Combat Division. Administrative Division. All competing for resources, prestige, power."

"And?"

"And when factions compete, opportunities arise."

Factions.

Internal politics.

Exploit that.

But needed information first. Intel. Leverage.

Needed to go back.

Not to rescue Chen Bo directly. Too obvious. Too stupid.

But to gather information. Find weakness. Exploit it.

Chen Bo bought me three weeks.

I'll use them wisely.

Stood.

Left cave.

Started journey back to Azure Cloud Sect.

Not as disciple.

As ghost.
