The front door clicked shut behind them.
Ben stepped inside and paused briefly near the entrance while warmth settled around him. The smell reached him immediately. Rosemary chicken roasting in the oven. Fresh detergent lingering from recently folded laundry. A faint trace of wood polish from the living room furniture. Underneath it all sat the softer scent of candle wax and cooked garlic drifting from the kitchen.
It smelled like home.
Some of the tension left his shoulders as he loosened his tie with one hand. The marble beneath his shoes reflected the warm lighting stretching through the mansion foyer while soft instrumental music played somewhere deeper inside the house.
A butler approached quietly from the side hallway and stopped beside him with practiced posture. Welcome home, master Ben."
Ben pulled off his jacket and handed it over without looking away from the hallway ahead. "Thank you, Marcus."
Marcus accepted it with both hands. "Of course, sir." Ben rolled one shoulder afterward. The muscle popped slightly beneath his shirt. "Long day huh? Should I prepare a bath for master?" Marcus asked.
Ben exhaled through his nose. "Sure, please do. You have no idea." Marcus's mouth twitched before he bowing slightly. "Mrs. Winchester has been saying the same thing all evening."
Marcus gave a small nod before stepping aside smoothly with the jacket folded neatly over his arm.
At the same time, footsteps rushed across the floor nearby.
"Hey, mother, we're back!"
Ben turned his head just as Alan came jogging around the corner.
His hoodie was half-zipped and crooked near the collar. A few damp strands of hair clung to his forehead like he had spent the last hour running around outside. The gold trophy tucked beneath his arm caught the overhead lights every time he moved.
Behind him, two maids approached with small amused smiles already spreading across their faces.
"One more trophy for the collection, young master?" one of them asked while reaching carefully for it.
Alan lifted it slightly out of reach first with a grin.
"Damn right. Don't drop this one. It cost grown men their dignity."
Marcus lowered his eyes and cleared his throat into a closed fist. One maid pressed her lips together. The other shook her head while trying not to laugh.
Ben rubbed the bridge of his nose. Then the second maid finally broke and laughed while taking his backpack from his shoulder.
"We will protect it with our lives, sir."
Alan finally handed over the trophy while shaking out his sore arm dramatically.
"I told you I would get the trophy," he said, holding it up toward Ben one last time before letting the maid take it.
Ben looked at it for a second before raising both hands slightly with a grin spreading across his face.
"Well of course you did," he replied. "Those people never stood a chance."
Alan walked closer while catching his breath. Ben reached out automatically and ruffled his son's hair. Alan groaned immediately and twisted sideways trying to duck away. "Seriously? Quit it, old man." He laughed despite himself while trying to flatten it back into place. Ben kept his hand there a moment longer anyway before finally letting go. "You look proud of yourself," Ben said.
"Well duh! I'm proud. I won ten grand and kicked some grown ass men in their own game. What else could I ask for?" Alan shifted his shoulders back proudly. "The judge said all my rounds were perfect." "Then he's absolutely right." Alan smirked and glanced at his reflection in a nearby window. "Oh come on. Look what you did." Ben folded his arms.
"I just improved it."
"You're impossible." He muttered under his breath, then leaned briefly against the wall while the maids disappeared down the hallway carrying his things upstairs.
From the kitchen, Diana glanced over her shoulder while stirring something inside a large pan resting over the stove. Warm light reflected softly across the polished counters around her. Her ponytail swayed lightly as she turned, a few loose strands falling near her cheek from the heat filling the kitchen. Flour dusted the front of her apron and part of her wrist.
"You are late, honey," she called out. "Did something happen on the way home?"
Ben walked toward the kitchen slowly, loosening the top button of his shirt as he approached her.
"Nothing dramatic."
Diana paused mid-stir, she moved her eyes briefly to the loosened tie, then to the crease between his eyebrows, then she looked back to the pan with a smirk, before lowering the heat beneath it. "That tone means you're hiding something."
Ben stepped beside her and slipped one arm around her waist, pulling her gently against him. Diana smiled immediately and rested both arms loosely behind his neck while leaning closer until their noses brushed softly together.
"Saving capitalism takes time," he murmured.
A quiet laugh escaped her as she tilted her head slightly and kissed him once.
"Well save some of that charm after dinner," she said while nudging his ribs lightly with her elbow afterward. "Winchester Enterprises is not going to run itself forever. You know I can handle the business side tonight. You need to rest."
Ben looked at her for a moment before smiling. This one came easier than the smiles he wore at the office.
"Deal," he said quietly.
Steam fogged part of the nearby window, the timer above the oven beeped once. Diana leaned over and silenced it without looking, the bread crackled softly as it cooled. "You know, cooking for you guys is a lot of fun. I told you I don't need the chiefs to make you a feast." She turned back toward the food, stirring the pan again with one hand. The kitchen felt lived in despite the size of the mansion. Recipe books rested open near the counter beside bowls of chopped vegetables and half-used spices. Fresh bread cooled on a tray nearby while the dishwasher hummed faintly in the background.
Alan leaned against the kitchen doorway spinning one of the dining chairs lazily with his hand while watching them.
"Jeez, you two are gross. Get a room already so the rest of us can eat in peace." Diana pointed the wooden spoon toward him without turning fully around. "Go wash your hands, young man. Dinner is almost ready."
Alan rolled his eyes dramatically but pushed himself off the doorway anyway. "Yes, mom." As he passed Ben, he bumped his shoulder lightly against him with a smirk then winked before heading toward the sink.
Ben clicked his tongue and stayed near the counter after they moved away. "This boy!" One hand rested against the marble surface while his eyes drifted toward the massive kitchen windows overlooking the city beyond the estate grounds.
Night had started settling over the skyline.
Thousands of distant lights flickered across the city beneath the darkening sky. Traffic moved in glowing streams between buildings while helicopters blinked faintly far above the streets.
For a brief moment, something colder passed behind Ben's eyes, his gaze lingered on the city longer than necessary, lights drifted between buildings as a helicopter crossed the skyline, he tightened his fingers slightly against the edge of the counter.
Then Diana noticed the movement, she brushed her shoulder lightly against his while reaching for another plate, and the expression disappeared as quickly as it came. "You good hun?"
Ben blinked, the tension left his hand. "Not sure, just deep in thought I guess."
