Chapter 150 - 150

"Oh..."

Nora responded softly, like a quietly obedient little thing, and walked over to the spot he'd pointed out, sat down, and folded both hands neatly in her lap.

Growing up, aside from her grandmother and her mother, almost nobody had ever genuinely looked out for her.

She'd learned a long time ago not to hold onto that kind of hope — not to assume, just because someone was kind once, that it meant anything lasting. But these past two days, Ethan's quiet, offhand consideration had been like a stone dropped into still water. For the first time in a long time, something in her chest stirred — timid, uncertain ripples spreading out from a place she'd kept completely still.

Was this real?

A few minutes later, Ethan came back carrying a steaming bowl.

The smell slammed straight into Nora's nose and didn't let go.

She stared at the bowl he placed in front of her and went completely still. Something warm surged up from somewhere deep in her chest, climbed to the back of her throat, and pressed behind her eyes.

She was from western North Carolina — she'd grown up on heat, on food that had some real kick to it. This kind of dish was exactly what she craved. Normally she didn't let herself look at it too long, because one bowl cost enough to cover several days of food.

Ethan set the bowl down, turned around.

"Eat while it's hot."

He sat down and slid one of the rice bowls in front of her.

Nora nodded, picked up her fork, carefully lifted a piece of tender beef glistening in bright red broth, blew on it once, and put it in her mouth.

The familiar heat bloomed across her tongue — rich, deep, exactly what she'd been craving — and she had to press her lips together to keep from sighing out loud.

Right then, two familiar figures appeared across the dining hall and made a beeline for them.

"Ethan! I knew that was you!"

Taylor came bouncing over, her eyes immediately landing on the girl sitting across from him with her head down. "Wait — is this your classmate?"

She caught a glimpse of the look Nora was wearing, and something flickered in her expression — just for a second — but her composure held easily, and her smile stayed warm and bright.

Ashley stepped up beside her, glancing at Ethan with a quiet smile. "You've been pretty hard to find these last couple of days."

After running into each other briefly on the first day, the three of them had scattered to their different schools, all caught up in their own chaos. This was the first time they'd crossed paths before orientation training started.

Ethan smiled and looked at Taylor. "You seem like you're thriving — dorm situation must be solid. Unlike Robert, who won't stop texting the group about his 'legendary' roommates."

He turned to Ashley. "Yeah, there's been a lot going on. You both ready for tomorrow? Sunscreen, big water bottles — you've got all that?"

"Obviously!"

They answered at the same time.

Taylor immediately pouted. "Ethan, must be so nice being exempt from training. Don't forget about us tomorrow — you better be our personal support crew. Water, snacks, moral support, the whole deal."

Ethan gave her a thumbs up. "Done. I'll be fully at your service."

Beside him, Nora kept her head down and ate in small, careful bites — but inside, she was anything but calm.

Ethan was already so easy and self-assured in the way he moved through the world. And his friends were exactly the same — bright, comfortable in their own skin. Ashley carried herself with a quiet steadiness, Taylor with this effortless warmth and energy that seemed to light up the air around her.

Even knowing her own face was no less than anyone else's, that old, bone-deep sense of smallness crept in anyway. Next to people like that, she felt about as noticeable as dust.

The gap really is huge.

Taylor's gaze bounced between Ethan and the girl across the table, a flicker of playfulness sneaking in. "Ethan, are you seriously not going to introduce her? Eating dinner with another girl, but not with us? Rude."

Ethan said lightly, "Hey, you two are busy."

Then he turned. "This is Nora — she's in my class, she's from North Carolina, she's a little shy." He looked at Nora. "These two are my good friends from high school. Ashley and Taylor."

Both of them said hello right away.

"Hi, Nora." Ashley smiled and nodded, easy and genuine.

"Hey, Nora! So good to meet you!" Taylor waved with full energy.

Nora looked up, cheeks going faintly pink, and managed a quiet, "Hi... hi, guys."

Taylor and Ashley exchanged a quick glance.

They knew Ethan well enough. There was obviously a reason he was being this attentive to a classmate who seemed, on the surface, a little out of place.

Ethan read both their faces immediately and pulled out his phone, firing off a message to their group chat. The short version: Nora came from a genuinely tough background, financially. She was the class's hardship scholarship student — a little insecure, still finding her footing. He'd run into her while heading back to campus and figured he'd make sure she got a real meal in, as class rep.

He obviously couldn't say the real version — I know she's actually stunning, I'm just looking out for her — so that would do.

Both girls read it and visibly softened. The looks they sent Nora's way after that carried something quieter and warmer in them.

The three of them fell into easy conversation — orientation training schedules, gear, the general chaos of the first week.

When it started getting late, Ashley and Taylor said their goodbyes, heading back to shower and get some sleep before the early morning.

"Alright, get some rest," Ethan said. "You're going to need it."

"Night, Ethan!" Ashley waved, then turned and gave Nora a small, kind smile.

"Bye, Ethan! Bye, Nora!" Taylor called out cheerfully, already halfway toward the door.

Nora quietly waved back and watched them go — the easy confidence in their steps, the way they moved like the world was just naturally theirs to walk through. The thought she'd been sitting with turned over in her mind again, heavier now.

Why do some people just get to live like that?

Out at the dining hall entrance, Ethan was heading for the car when Nora took a breath and spoke up:

"So... when should I..." She hesitated. "Where do I find you?"

She meant the car cleaning.

Ethan checked his watch. "Seven o'clock. Wait for me downstairs at my dorm."

He opened the car door, started the engine, and pulled away into the dark.

Nora stood watching until the taillights disappeared around a bend. Then she turned and walked, alone and quiet, back toward her residence hall.

Meanwhile, the three guys from Room 208 had just finished dinner and were making their way back across campus.

Kevin looked genuinely offended. "Ethan is seriously out of pocket. Hands out uniforms at noon, then completely vanishes — doesn't even show up for dinner! What are we, invisible?"

Marcus stroked his chin slowly, eyes narrowing with the energy of a man who had cracked the case. He dropped his voice like he was about to reveal something massive:

"You know what I think?" He let the pause breathe. "I think Ethan... might secretly have a girlfriend. Dude's basically a ghost — never around!"
