"Even though I don't feel safe with Meret right now, I'm grateful you were thoughtful enough to bring me here. Despite my reluctance." Maya paused observing him.
"It's made me realise something," she continued. "I need to move."
Bruce's breath caught.
"I don't know why my cousin hates me so much, but I don't feel safe around her anymore. I thought staying would be okay—since she asked me to—but I'm starting to think it's because of my father. And whatever people believe he did to her. And maybe the resentment from growing up with my stepsister."
She tightened her grip on the glass.
"I really don't feel safe with her. And I don't think I even want to talk to her anymore."
She hesitated, then looked at him.
"Can I stay here for a few days? Just until I can move fully into my new apartment?"
Bruce hadn't expected that.
