He felt a strange, bittersweet comfort in the idea. If Rex could stabilize the situation, and somehow bridge the gap left by the broken key, then everything could be mended.
Elizabeth could come back to him. Rex's competence could wash away the shame of his failure.
"Yes," he breathed, a sense of purpose returning to his weary bones. "Rex will handle it, alright!"
"He always does!"
"He'll find a way to fix the mess, and then... then everything can go back to the way it was supposed to be."
"I can marry my Elizabeth after all of this... and we can live happily ever after because that's the promise Lady Valentine gave us!" Alexander clenched his fists. "And I also need to work harder so that I can help behind their backs!"
