It involved the Drug Enforcement Bureau, and a senior agent was likely using his position to traffic drugs.
This Director of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office finally understood why a tip-off that seemed perfectly ordinary would be solemnly delivered to his desk.
"Is there evidence?"
Director Filer asked.
The FBI falls under the US Department of Justice and has immense power.
They can investigate organized crime, public corruption, financial crime, government fraud, bribery, copyright infringement, civil rights violations, bank robbery, extortion, kidnapping, hijacking, terrorism, espionage, interstate crime, drug trafficking, and other acts that violate US law.
When corruption occurs within the Drug Enforcement Bureau, the FBI and the DEB do not belong to the same system at all.
Therefore, Director Filer didn't mind stepping in to investigate.
The prerequisite was that they could reap some merit from it.
Otherwise, given the FBI's notorious reputation within the US, he believed the Drug Enforcement Bureau wouldn't cooperate at all.
The Black Deputy Director shook his head: "Stanfield is very cautious. One of our former informants once reported him, but not long after, he died because word apparently leaked out."
Director Filer was immediately displeased: "Frye, this makes things difficult for me."
A senior agent suddenly spoke up at this moment: "Director, since the letter reported that guy named Michael..."
"...we can ignore Stanfield and the Drug Enforcement Bureau for now and first investigate whether that thug Michael really has drugs hidden in his home."
"If we can prove that and then control Michael, it won't be too late to use him as a breakthrough to investigate Stanfield."
That was actually a good suggestion!
Director Filer couldn't help but nod, looking at the senior agent and smiling encouragingly: "Jonathan is right. Frye, have your people investigate that Michael first."
"Conveniently, don't you already have agents stationed at that apartment? Just investigate them together."
Soon, he seemed to think of something else.
He shook his head and continued to the Black Deputy Director: "As for the California Highway Robbery Case, you don't need to investigate any further."
"That's a case the Los Angeles Police Department is responsible for; we just need to cooperate by issuing a wanted poster."
"Back then, it was us who proposed detaining Dominic and his people, but the Los Angeles Police Department let them out on bail."
"They have to bear this consequence themselves."
Seeing that Director Filer wanted to throw the blame for the failed California Highway Robbery Case committed by Dominic's crew directly onto the Los Angeles Police Department...
The Black Deputy Director opened his mouth; he actually knew that this was the most stable approach right now.
Because all signs indicated that Dominic, his sister, and several confidants had already fled Los Angeles and even California.
God knows if they've left the country or found a remote town to live under assumed names and hide.
Continuing the investigation and pursuit would likely yield very little.
This Black Deputy Director actually didn't want to deal with it anymore either.
But he glanced to the side and saw the unwilling looks on several of his subordinates' faces.
So he sighed, "I understand, Director."
"Alex, Nathan, and the others have been following this case for a while. Why don't we give them a few more days?"
"We'll take some time to take that asian guy, Hunter Sun, into criminal detention for questioning."
"If there are still no results, then we'll just let it go."
Filer thought about it and was just about to agree.
Suddenly, the office phone rang.
He had no choice but to make a 'wait' gesture to the others, then picked up the phone and said, "This is Philo Harris, what's the situation?"
A blurred voice came from the other end of the phone.
The other people in the office looked in different directions, pretending they weren't paying attention.
However, everyone's attention was actually on Director Filer.
Because of this, they all saw Director Filer's face change from shock to gloom, and then to fury.
Soon, a roar erupted.
"Investigate, investigate immediately!"
"Don't let the Los Angeles Police Department handle it; tell them we'll investigate it ourselves."
After speaking, he slammed the phone down with a bang.
Director Filer then looked at the Black Deputy Director, his eyes seemingly turning red.
"Frye!"
He asked in a low voice: "Which apartment building did you just mention?"
For some reason, the Black Deputy Director suddenly had a bad feeling in his heart.
He quickly gave the name of the apartment where Hunter lived and then asked cautiously: "Director, did something happen over there?"
Director Filer took several deep breaths before suppressing the anger in his heart.
He looked at the several people in the office, his expression extremely ugly.
"The Los Angeles Police Department just contacted us. They told us that in the apartment building you just mentioned..."
"...an FBI agent we sent to monitor Hunter Sun was suspected to have been killed by home invasion robbers, shot five times!"
"When they arrived after receiving the emergency call, a total of three homes in that apartment building had been robbed, and four people were shot dead by the thugs."
"All of them died on the spot!"
"According to witnesses, there were four thugs in total. they fled after stealing some valuables."
The office fell into a dead silence.
The Black Deputy Director also took a deep breath before shaking his head and saying: "Impossible!"
"Although I'm temporarily unsure who the two agents on the surveillance rotation were..."
"...our FBI agents aren't people who can be taken out by just a few random robbers."
"Furthermore, that agent was staying in the apartment for a surveillance mission."
"To encounter a home invasion robbery under such circumstances seems a bit too deliberate."
Director Filer also reacted, his face gloomy: "You suspect someone specifically wanted to kill him? Was it that Chinese guy named Hunter Sun?"
"Probably not!"
The Black Deputy Director shook his head; they had been monitoring Hunter for a while.
From past investigations, besides potentially helping people illegally modify vehicles to earn high rewards...
...that Chinese youth just had a somewhat loose private life. Most of the time, his schedule was very regular, and no other illegal acts were discovered.
If it weren't for Vince, Slant, and those others who agreed to be FBI informants insisting that this Chinese youth was problematic...
...the FBI wouldn't have even wanted to continue the investigation.
"How about this, I'll send someone to confirm first."
"If it really is related to that Hunter Sun, I'll immediately sign an arrest warrant to capture that Chinese youth."
Director Filer nodded: "I'll leave this matter to you. Find out the truth as soon as possible."
He stood up and prepared to head out.
"The remains have currently been taken away by the Los Angeles Police Department. I'll go to the LAPD first to negotiate and stop them from intervening further."
"Alright!"
After Director Filer left, the Black Deputy Director looked at several of his subordinates with a worried frown.
One senior agent immediately spoke up: "Frye, could this be related to Stanfield?"
The Black Deputy Director was easy to talk to and perked up at the words, "Tell me your thoughts, Nathan?"
Nathan organized his words: "Someone reported to us that in the apartment where Hunter Sun lives, there's a tenant named Michael who is helping Stanfield hide drugs."
"As a result, not long after, one of our brothers responsible for monitoring that apartment building died."
"This matter came too suddenly and suspiciously. I don't believe that Chinese youth could have done it."
The Black Deputy Director also didn't believe the Hunter they were monitoring did it, but he didn't know much about Stanfield either.
So he scanned the several people in the office, clapped his hands, and issued an order.
"Brothers, one of our own has been harmed."
"Whether the one who killed him was that Chinese youth..."
"...or home invasion robbers, or perhaps Stanfield?"
"Now, we must first go out and find the real culprit."
"Move your legs, use your brains, and mobilize all your informants."
"Go!"
The FBI finally began to take action according to Hunter's plan...
