Chapter 135 - Chapter 135: Saving Matilda

Hunter had to admit that Matilda, who had matured early, still had some street smarts.

He saw that as soon as Matilda reached the sixth floor, she quickly realized there might be trouble at home.

Perhaps this little girl didn't yet know that her father, sister, and brother had all met tragic ends.

But based on past experience, she realized her home was likely in trouble right now.

So, she very cleverly turned and walked towards Hunter's rented apartment.

However, perhaps because she hadn't seen the corpses of her father, sister, and brother with her own eyes...

Matilda's expression, while slightly unnatural, didn't seem that urgent.

"Lucky for you!"

Hunter had already saved her mother, Maggie—the kind neighbor lady who often knocked on his door late at night to offer him 'warmth'.

Although Maggie was only Matilda's stepmother and their relationship wasn't great...

On the principle that saving one is saving, and saving two is also saving...

Hunter didn't mind lending a hand to save Matilda since he was able to.

The burly man in the vest stationed in the sixth-floor hallway fixed his gaze on the little girl the moment she appeared.

His hawk-like eyes stared intensely at her.

Although he didn't immediately pull his gun to deal with Matilda as Stanfield had ordered before they came—likely due to her age...

As long as he detected any strange or inappropriate behavior from Matilda...

He would still draw his weapon and pull the trigger on this little girl without hesitation.

Standing by the door, Hunter also noticed the burly man's gaze.

Therefore, after Matilda walked to his apartment door and reached out to knock...

He waited for about three or four seconds, and before she could knock a second time, he called out, "Coming!"

With that, he opened the door and let Matilda inside.

Matilda clearly hadn't expected that this handsome young asian guy—who she suspected was having an affair with her promiscuous stepmother—would actually open the door for her.

Furthermore, he didn't even ask her why she was knocking on his door.

However, despite her confusion...

Matilda slipped into the room, and she saw the handsome young asian guy quickly close the door.

After making a'shush' gesture to her, he stood behind the door and continued to observe the outside through the peephole.

In fact, Hunter was indeed watching the outside.

He watched until the burly man in the vest, after Matilda entered his home, quickly turned back around to continue staring at the stairs.

Only then did Hunter casually engage all the locks on the door.

Then he grabbed Matilda's arm and whispered to her, "It's dangerous outside. Let's talk inside. Keep your voice down."

Matilda was taken aback, and her face instantly went pale.

Her lips moved, but she obediently followed Hunter away from the door.

Only then did she speak up and ask, "Are they here for my family?"

"Has something... happened at my house?"

When she came back today, she had heard someone mention that the apartment had been robbed and a resident had been shot dead by robbers.

However, when she first got home...

She saw Michael watching TV, so she had felt relieved.

Although Michael was Matilda's biological father, he was a thug after all.

Matilda had never experienced much fatherly love from him since she was a child.

She was often beaten, which was why she had suppressed her curiosity and hadn't asked Michael about the apartment robbery.

"Shh, I'm going to call the police first. I'll tell you later!"

Hunter whispered a serious instruction to Matilda and then pulled out his phone.

After a moment's thought, he decided to dial the number left by the two FBI Agents who had contacted him that afternoon.

And so, the call was quickly placed.

A moment later, the call was picked up.

The moment the call connected, Hunter immediately said, "Hello, is this Agent William?"

A man's voice soon came from the other end.

"Yes, this is he."

Hunter continued, "Hello, Agent William. This is Hunter Sun, the person you spoke with this afternoon."

"This afternoon, when you came to ask me for leads regarding the armed intrusion into my apartment building..."

"I was out at the time and didn't have any useful information to help you."

"But now, I want to report a crime to you."

"Just tonight, right now, several unidentified individuals have broken into the sixth floor of our apartment building again."

"One of them is currently standing guard in the hallway outside, while the others have broken into the home of a neighbor of mine named Michael."

"I was cooking just now and I thought I heard gunshots, but I can't be sure."

"Could you please send someone to investigate?"

On the other end of the line, Agent William listened patiently before immediately pressing, "Sir, are you certain about everything you've just said?"

"Yes, Agent. They are still in our apartment building; they haven't left yet."

A burst of static came from the other side. The person on the phone was being cautious and had covered the mouthpiece.

As a result, even with Hunter's extraordinary hearing, he only managed to catch a few blurred words.

He wasn't kept waiting for long; Agent William soon answered him.

"Alright, we're sending someone over to check it out right now."

"Thank you for your cooperation in this investigation!"

The call was quickly disconnected. Hunter put away his phone.

Only then did he look at Matilda, who was waiting quietly nearby.

He sighed and said to Matilda, "Little girl, I don't know what happened at your home."

"But if I didn't hear wrong just now, there were indeed gunshots in your house."

"Stay here with me for now. Don't go back until the police arrive."

The precocious Matilda's face grew several shades paler.

Her eyes quickly reddened, and she said with a sob in her voice, "I knew something would happen to Michael sooner or later."

"He's always hanging out with shady friends and even doing work for some gangs."

"He thought we didn't know he was hiding things in the toilet tank at home."

"I knew he'd bring ruin upon us eventually."

"I just hope they don't do anything to my little brother. He's so small, he just started elementary school."

For a moment, Hunter didn't know how to comfort this overly mature little girl.

He fell silent for a moment, then stood up and walked toward the kitchen.

"Little one, leave those dangerous matters to the police."

"You probably haven't had dinner yet. I'll make you something to eat."
